The Adaptive Priority Queue with Elimination and Combining
Priority queues are fundamental abstract data structures, often used to
manage limited resources in parallel programming. Several proposed parallel
priority queue implementations are based on skiplists, harnessing the potential
for parallelism of the add() operations. In addition, methods such as Flat
Combining have been proposed to reduce contention by batching together multiple
operations to be executed by a single thread. While this technique can decrease
lock-switching overhead and the number of pointer changes required by the
removeMin() operations in the priority queue, it can also create a sequential
bottleneck and limit parallelism, especially for non-conflicting add()
operations.
In this paper, we describe a novel priority queue design, harnessing the
scalability of parallel insertions in conjunction with the efficiency of
batched removals. Moreover, we present a new elimination algorithm suitable for
a priority queue, which further increases concurrency on balanced workloads
with similar numbers of add() and removeMin() operations. We implement and
evaluate our design using a variety of techniques including locking, atomic
operations, hardware transactional memory, as well as employing adaptive

In January 1985 The Journal of Chinese Medicine published an edited transcript of a discussion called ‘Acupuncture in the West’ between Peter Deadman, Ted Kaptchuk, Giovanni Maciocia and Felicity Moir. It was a particularly popular article and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the JCM we decided to convene another discussion, in London in March 2009. Present this time were Peter Deadman (PD), Hugh MacPherson (HM), Daniel Maxwell (DM), Felicity Moir (FM) and Volker Scheid (VS). All are past or present practitioners of acupuncture and/or herbal medicine
Rationale and Design of an Online Educational Program Using Game-Based Learning to Improve Nutrition and Physical Activity Outcomes Among University Students in the United Kingdom.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of an online game-based educational program on nutrition knowledge and dietary and physical activity habits among university students in the United Kingdom. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial with pre- and postintervention comparisons. SETTING: Two higher education settings in London, UK. SUBJECTS: Current undergraduate and postgraduate students of two universities (n = 88) aged 18-34 years are randomly allocated to an intervention (n = 44) or a control group (n = 44). INTERVENTION: The intervention group will receive access to an educational website and online quizzes with gamification elements, including information about healthy eating and physical activity. The control group will receive no information. Duration of the intervention will be 10 weeks. MEASURES OF OUTCOME: Primary outcome is nutrition knowledge. Secondary outcomes include dietary and activity habits. Nutrition knowledge and dietary and activity habits will be assessed using questionnaires. Weekly steps will be counted using pedometers. Assessment of anthropometric and metabolic risk factors will take place. ANALYSIS: Quantitative analysis will investigate changes in nutrition knowledge between the two groups of the study population. Linear regression analysis will be used, if the data follow the normal distribution (otherwise binomial regression analysis), to examine whether field of study, residence status, body mass index (BMI), and demographic factors affect nutrition knowledge. Associations between changes in knowledge and dietary and physical activity behavior will be assessed by correlations. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: The study will provide insights with regard to the design and use of online game-playing as a cost-effective approach to improve nutritional knowledge among university students
Critical States in Disordered Superconducting Films
When subject to a pair-breaking perturbation, the pairing susceptibility of a
disordered superconductor exhibits substantial long-ranged mesoscopic
fluctuations. Focusing on a thin film subject to a parallel magnetic field, it
is proposed that the quantum phase transition to the bulk superconducting
condensate may be preempted by the formation of a glass-like phase with
multi-fractal correlations of a complex order parameter. Although not
universal, we argue that such behavior may be a common feature of quantum

On the Importance of Registers for Computability
All consensus hierarchies in the literature assume that we have, in addition
to copies of a given object, an unbounded number of registers. But why do we
really need these registers?
This paper considers what would happen if one attempts to solve consensus
using various objects but without any registers. We show that under a
reasonable assumption, objects like queues and stacks cannot emulate the
missing registers. We also show that, perhaps surprisingly, initialization,
shown to have no computational consequences when registers are readily
available, is crucial in determining the synchronization power of objects when
no registers are allowed. Finally, we show that without registers, the number
of available objects affects the level of consensus that can be solved.
Our work thus raises the question of whether consensus hierarchies which
assume an unbounded number of registers truly capture synchronization power,
and begins a line of research aimed at better understanding the interaction
between read-write memory and the powerful synchronization operations available

From Service to Experience: Understanding and Defining the Hospitality Business
Failure adequately to define or understand hospitality as a commercial phenomenon has created a fragmented academic environment and a schizophrenia in the industry that has the potential to limit its development as a global industry. This article suggests that, by redefining hospitality as behaviour and experience, a new perspective emerges that has exciting implications for the management of hospitality businesses. A framework to describe hospitality in the commercial domain is proposed. This framework suggests a focus on the host–guest relationship, generosity, theatre and performance, ‘lots of little surprises’, and the security of strangers – a focus that provides guests with experiences that are personal, memorable and add value to their lives
Studies of the lamin proteinase reveal multiple parallel biochemical pathways during apoptotic execution
Although specific proteinases play a critical role in the active phase of apoptosis, their substrates are largely unknown. We previously identified poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) as an apoptosis-associated substrate for proteinase(s) related to interleukin 1 beta-converting enzyme (ICE). Now we have used a cell-free system to characterize proteinase(s) that cleave the nuclear lamins during apoptosis. Lamin cleavage during apoptosis requires the action of a second ICE-like enyzme, which exhibits kinetics of cleavage and a profile of sensitivity to specific inhibitors that is distinct from the PARP proteinase. Thus, multiple ICE-like enzymes are required for apoptotic events in these cell-free extracts. Inhibition of the lamin proteinase with tosyllysine "chloromethyl ketone" blocks nuclear apoptosis prior to the packaging of condensed chromatin into apoptotic bodies. Under these conditions, the nuclear DNA is fully cleaved to a nucleosomal ladder. Our studies reveal that the lamin proteinase and the fragmentation nuclease function in independent parallel pathways during the final stages of apoptotic execution. Neither pathway alone is sufficient for completion of nuclear apoptosis. Instead, the various activities cooperate to drive the disassembly of the nucleus
