    Choosing Children: Preventing Intra-Family Conflict from Feeding the Prison Pipeline

    Parents struggling to raise challenging children often lack needed community support. These parents turn to law enforcement when they feel their child cannot be controlled. Problematically, law enforcement officers are trained to respond to crime, not simple parent-child domestic disputes. Thus, when parents call police during disagreements, the argument may end in arrest and contact with the juvenile court system. Interaction with the juvenile justice system carries a myriad of risks. This comment outlines the risks inherent in calling the police and entering the juvenile court system. The author evaluates existing alternatives to calling law enforcement and recommends that communities adopt alternatives to calling the police for cases of intrafamily conflict

    Glycoprotein Metabolism in Skin Cancer: Synthesis, Pool Size, and Partial Characterization of Glycoproteins in the Rat Basosquamous Cell Carcinoma

    Uptake of fucose, glucosamine, galactose, and mannose and the incorporation of these sugars into glycoconjugates have been quantified in a model epithelial tumor, the basosquamous cell carcinoma of the rat. Following isolation of glycoprotein and papain digestion, the fucosylated glycopeptides were fractionated according to molecular weight (Mr) and by affinity chromatography.Analysis of cellular material revealed a 2- to 3-fold reduction in the proportion of high-Mr fucopeptides synthesized by the tumor compared with normal epidermis, accompanied by a profound block in the incorporation of galactose into glycoconjugates. Parallel investigation of carbohydrate removed from the cell surface with trypsin or spontaneously shed into the medium indicated a striking decrease in the total release of fucopeptides from the tumor; the Mr was (respectively) normal or increased. Thus the fucopeptide abnormality appears to be accounted for almost entirely by a shift toward accumulation of low-Mr material at internal locations within the cell

Aphis cytisorum Hartig is recorded for the third time in Argentina. Data on morphological variation, geographical distribution, and host plants of these species in Argentina are provided. Their morphological identification is supported by comparison of DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (DNA barcode) and subunit 2.S

    Spontaneous polarisation of the neutral interface for valence asymmetric coulombic systems

    In this paper, we discuss the phenomenon of a spontaneous polarisation of a neutral hard planar interface for valence asymmetric coulombic systems. Within a field theoretical description, we account for the existence of non trivial charge density and electric potential profiles. The analysis of the phenomenon shows that the effect is related to combinatorics in relation with the existence of the two independent species cations and anions. This simple and basic feature is related to the quantum mechanical properties of the system. The theoretical results are compared with numerical simulations data and are shown to be in very good agreement, which a fortiori justifies our physical interpretation.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure

    Photoionization Of Atomic Oxygen At The Multiplet Term Level From 20 To 212 Ev

    The valence shell photoionization branching ratios of atomic oxygen are measured at the multiplet term level in a synchrotron-radiation-based electron spectrometry experiment and calculated using the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) method for photon energies between 20 and 212 eV. The 2p (S-4,D-2,P-2) branching ratios, 2s P-2 to 2s P-4 intensity ratio, and 2s to 2p cross-section ratio for removal of a 2s of 2p electron are presented, and satisfactory agreement between the experiment and the MCHF calculation is found. In addition, the relative photoionization cross section is measured between 24 and 122 eV and is compared with calculations and a previous absolute cross-section measurement. Good agreement between the experimental and MCHF results is seen

    Angular-Distribution Of Fluorescence From Photoionization-Produced He+ (N=2)

    We report the first measurement of the angular distribution of the 304-ƅ He + ( n = 2 ) radiation following photoionization. This distribution reflects the alignment of the ion, which is related to the fraction Ī¾ = Ļƒ ( 2 p , k d ) [ Ļƒ ( 2 p , k s ) + Ļƒ ( 2 p , k d ) ] of d component in the electron wave. The experimental angular distributions correspond to alignments of -0.62 Ā± 0.03 and -0.62 Ā± 0.02 at photon energies of 65.5 and 66.5 eV, respectively. These translate into ratios Ī¾ = 0.25 Ā± 0.04 and 0.25 Ā± 0.03 , in good agreement with close-coupling calculations

    On the nature of transport in near-critical dissipative-trapped-electron-mode turbulence: Effect of a subdominant diffusive channel

    9 pages, 4 figures.-- PACS nrs.: 52.35.Ra, 52.55.-s.The change in nature of radial transport in numerical simulations of near-critical dissipative-trapped-electron-mode turbulence is characterized as the relative strength of an additional diffusive transport channel (subdominant to turbulence) is increased from zero. In its absence, radial transport exhibits the lack of spatial and temporal scales characteristic of self-organized-critical systems. This dynamical regime survives up to diffusivity values which, for the system investigated here, greatly exceeds the expected neoclassical value. These results, obtained using a novel Lagrangian method, complete and extend previous works based instead on the use of techniques imported from the study of cellular automata [ J. A. Mier et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 102308 (2006) ].
