Plastic shoe aids inspection of thin walled stainless steel welded tubing to locate voids or other material defects in critical component equipment. Incorporated in available ultrasonic inspection equipment, it couples the transducer to the tube at desired incident angles
High-temperature oxidation and erosion-resistant refractory coatings
Various refractory coating systems were evaluated for rocket nozzle applications by actual rocket test firings. A reference is noted which identifies failure mechanisms and gives results of the firing tests for 18 coating systems. Iridium, iridium-rhenium, and hafnium oxide-zirconium oxide coatings show most promising results

Study of multi-megawatt technology needs for photovoltaic space power systems. Volume 1: Executive summary
Possible missions requiring multimegawatt photovoltaic space power systems in the 1990's time frame and associated power system technology needs are examined. The following concepts for photovoltaic power approaches are considered: planar arrays, concentrating arrays, hybrid systems using Rankine engines, thermophotovoltaic and AC/DC power management approaches, battery, fuel cell, flywheel energy storage, and interactions with the electrical ion engine injection and stationkeeping system. The levels of modularity for efficient, safe, constructable, serviceable, and cost effective system design are analyzed, and the benefits of alternate approaches developed. Both manned low Earth orbit and unmanned geosynchronous Earth orbit applications were examined for technological development. Technology developments applicable to power systems which appear to have benefits independent of the absolute power level are suggested
Avatars:the other side of Proteus's mirror : a study into avatar choice regarding perception
The trend for online interactions, can be regarded as being ‘anti-so-cially social’, meaning that a great deal of time is spent playing, working and socializing with the internet serving as the communication conduit. Within that Virtual Social Environment very deep relationships are formed and maintained without the parties ever having met each other face-to-face. Raising the question how much does the physical appearance of an avatar influence the perception of the person behind it? Are relationships informed by appearance even in the vir-tual world and what implications does that have for second language acquisition? This paper leads to a small-scale research project where a selection of avatars with various racially identifiable characteristics were used to identify which av-atars a second language speaker would feel more at ease interacting with in the target language. The resultant research aims to test three hypotheses regarding preferred avatar choice for second language users based solely on perceptions
Keplerian Motion of Broad-Line Region Gas as Evidence for Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei
Emission-line variability data on NGC 5548 argue strongly for the existence
of a mass of order 7 x 10^7 solar masses within the inner few light days of the
nucleus in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The time-delayed response of the
emission lines to continuum variations is used to infer the size of the
line-emitting region, and these determinations are combined with measurements
of the Doppler widths of the variable line components to estimate a virial
mass. The data for several different emission lines spanning an order of
magnitude in distance from the central source show the expected V proportional
to r^{-1/2} correlation and are consistent with a single value for the mass.Comment: 9 pages, 2 Figures. accepted by ApJ Letter
Evidence for Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei from Emission-Line Reverberation
Emission-line variability data for Seyfert 1 galaxies provide strong evidence
for the existence of supermassive black holes in the nuclei of these galaxies,
and that the line-emitting gas is moving in the gravitational potential of that
black hole. The time-delayed response of the emission lines to continuum
variations is used to infer the size of the line-emitting region, which is then
combined with measurements of the Doppler widths of the variable line
components to estimate a virial mass. In the case of the best-studied galaxy,
NGC 5548, various emission lines spanning an order of magnitude in distance
from the central source show the expected velocity proportional to inverse
square root of the distance correlation between distance and line width, and
are thus consistent with a single value for the mass. Two other Seyfert
galaxies, NGC 7469 and 3C 390.3, show a similar relationship. We compute the
ratio of luminosity to mass for these three objects and the narrow-line Seyfert
1 galaxy NGC 4051 and find that that the gravitational force on the
line-emitting gas is much stronger than radiation pressure. These results
strongly support the paradigm of gravitationally bound broad emission-line
