Head impact exposure in junior and adult Australian football players
Tis study measured and compared the frequency, magnitude, and distribution of head impacts sustained by junior and adult Australian football players, respectively, and between player positions over a season of games. Twelve junior and twelve adult players were tracked using a skin-mounted impact sensor. Head impact exposure, including frequency, magnitude, and location of impacts, was quantifed using previously established methods. Over the collection period, there were no signifcant diferences in the impact frequency between junior and adult players. However, there was a signifcant increase in the frequency of head impacts for midfelders in both grades once we accounted for player position. A comparable amount of head impacts in both junior and adult players has implications for Australian football regarding player safety and medical coverage as younger players sustained similar impact levels as adult players. Te other implication of a higher impact profle within midfelders is that, by targeting education and prevention strategies, a decrease in the incidence of sports-related concussion may result
Daily Scheduled High Fat Meals Moderately Entrain Behavioral Anticipatory Activity, Body Temperature, and Hypothalamic c-Fos Activation
When fed in restricted amounts, rodents show robust activity in the hours preceding expected meal delivery. This process, termed food anticipatory activity (FAA), is independent of the light-entrained clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, yet beyond this basic observation there is little agreement on the neuronal underpinnings of FAA. One complication in studying FAA using a calorie restriction model is that much of the brain is activated in response to this strong hunger signal. Thus, daily timed access to palatable meals in the presence of continuous access to standard chow has been employed as a model to study FAA in rats. In order to exploit the extensive genetic resources available in the murine system we extended this model to mice, which will anticipate rodent high fat diet but not chocolate or other sweet daily meals (Hsu, Patton, Mistlberger, and Steele; 2010, PLoS ONE e12903). In this study we test additional fatty meals, including peanut butter and cheese, both of which induced modest FAA. Measurement of core body temperature revealed a moderate preprandial increase in temperature in mice fed high fat diet but entrainment due to handling complicated interpretation of these results. Finally, we examined activation patterns of neurons by immunostaining for the immediate early gene c-Fos and observed a modest amount of entrainment of gene expression in the hypothalamus of mice fed a daily fatty palatable meal
Saturated laser fluorescence in turbulent sooting flames at high pressure
The primary objective was to develop a quantitative, single pulse, laser-saturated fluorescence (LSF) technique for measurement of radical species concentrations in practical flames. The species of immediate interest was the hydroxyl radical. Measurements were made in both turbulent premixed diffusion flames at pressures between 1 and 20 atm. Interferences from Mie scattering were assessed by doping with particles or by controlling soot loading through variation of equivalence ratio and fuel type. The efficacy of the LSF method at high pressure was addressed by comparing fluorescence and adsorption measurements in a premixed, laminar flat flame at 1-20 atm. Signal-averaging over many laser shots is sufficient to determine the local concentration of radical species in laminar flames. However, for turbulent flames, single pulse measurements are more appropriate since a statistically significant number of laser pulses is needed to determine the probability function (PDF). PDFs can be analyzed to give true average properties and true local kinetics in turbulent, chemically reactive flows
Community-based participatory irrigation management at local government level in Ghana
Ghana has attempted to decentralise the management of irrigation schemes to communities at local government level. This study examines the existing local participatory management structures and the principles of the Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) strategy designed to promote sustainable management of irrigation schemes in Ghana. Two community-based irrigation projects, Bontanga and Golinga in the Northern Region of Ghana were selected for the research. The study demonstrated that farmers’ participation was minimal and limited to the discussion of irrigation service charges at the expense of other issues related to the sustainability of the projects/schemes. The study also established that there was less participation of women, and more than half of all the crop farmers on the two irrigation projects were reluctant to assume additional responsibilities without remuneration. The study therefore concluded that the sustainability of the PIM strategy depends on the adoption of an integrated management approach involving all stakeholders including local government, with appropriate incentives
Simplified quantum logic with trapped ions
We describe a simplified scheme for quantum logic with a collection of
laser-cooled trapped atomic ions. Building on the scheme of Cirac and Zoller,
we show how the fundamental controlled-NOT gate between a collective mode of
ion motion and the internal states of a single ion can be reduced to a single
laser pulse, and the need for a third auxiliary internal electronic state can

The non-metallic materials sample array
The Non-Metallic Materials Sample Array (MSA) was flown as verification flight instrumentation (VFI) on both Spacelab 1 (SL-1) and Spacelab 2 (SL-2). The basis for materials selection was either previous flight history or probable flight suitability based upon analysis. The observed changes in the optical properties of the exposed materials are, in general, quite minimal; however, this data represents the short exposure of two Space Shuttle missions, and no attempt should be made to extrapolate the long-term exposure. The MSA was in orbit for 10 days at approximately 240 km on SL-1 and for 7 days at approximately 315 km on SL-2. The array was exposed to the solar flux for only a portion of the time in orbit
Comparative accuracy of the Albedo, transmission and absorption for selected radiative transfer approximations
Illustrations of both the relative and absolute accuracy of eight different radiative transfer approximations as a function of optical thickness, solar zenith angle and single scattering albedo are given. Computational results for the plane albedo, total transmission and fractional absorption were obtained for plane-parallel atmospheres composed of cloud particles. These computations, which were obtained using the doubling method, are compared with comparable results obtained using selected radiative transfer approximations. Comparisons were made between asymptotic theory for thick layers and the following widely used two stream approximations: Coakley-Chylek's models 1 and 2, Meador-Weaver, Eddington, delta-Eddington, PIFM and delta-discrete ordinates
High Redshift Standard Candles: Predicted Cosmological Constraints
We investigate whether future measurements of high redshift standard candles
(HzSCs) will be a powerful probe of dark energy, when compared to other types
of planned dark energy measurements. Active galactic nuclei and gamma ray
bursts have both been proposed as potential HzSC candidates. Due to their high
luminosity, they can be used to probe unexplored regions in the expansion
history of the universe. Information from these regions can help constrain the
properties of dark energy, and in particular, whether it varies over time.
We consider both linear and piecewise parameterizations of the dark energy
equation of state, , and assess the optimal redshift distribution a
high-redshift standard-candle survey could take to constrain these models.
The more general the form of the dark energy equation of state being
tested, the more useful high-redshift standard candles become. For a linear
parameterization of , HzSCs give only small improvements over planned
supernova and baryon acoustic oscillation measurements; a wide redshift range
with many low redshift points is optimal to constrain this linear model.
However to constrain a general, and thus potentially more informative, form of
, having many HzSCs can significantly improve limits on the nature of

A review of knowledge: inter-row hoeing & its associated agronomy in organic cereal & pulse crops
The aim of this project was to establish the “state of the art” for inter-row hoeing and its associated agronomic practices in organic cereal and pulse crops. To achieve this a detailed review of literature was undertaken.
• To facilitate inter-row cultivation in cereal and pulse crops, some adjustment of row spacing may be required. For cereals, drilling crops in 25 cm rows can reduce yield compared with normal drilling practice, primarily due to greater intra-specific competition amongst the crop (i.e. competition between crop plants).
• The yield penalty resulting from widely spaced crop rows can be minimised using a number of approaches, depending on the drill:
1. Reducing the seed rate in widely spaced crop rows can help to minimise excessive intra-specific competition.
2. Band sowing the crop in wide rows can also help to minimise intra-specific competition as the seed is distributed over a greater area.
3. Using a twin-row arrangement can completely overcome the yield penalty.
• The recommended row spacing for peas (up to 20 cm) and beans (up to 35 cm) does not require any further adjustment for inter-row hoeing.
• Recent developments in automated guidance of inter-row hoeing equipment mean that weeding operations can now be conducted a much higher speeds (10 km h-1). This has highlighted the limitations of some of the cultivators currently used (e.g. ‘A’ blades), as excessive soil throw can occur at this high speed. Rolling cultivators may prove to be the most suitable at high forward speeds. For manually guided hoes working at slower speeds (5 km h-1), ‘A’ and ‘L’ blades offer an effective low cost solution.
• In terms of the timing of inter-row hoeing, it is suggested that weeding operations should be conducted at an early stage in the growing season, as the weeds that emerge with or shortly after the crop are the ones that pose the most significant threat for crop yield. Weeding on two occasions can provide better levels of weed control than weeding once, but weeding more frequently offered little additional benefit. Reductions of weed biomass of up to 99 % have been reported as a result of inter-row hoeing, although this has not always resulted in a positive crop yield response. This is probably due to crop damage resulting from inaccurate hoeing, a problem that can be overcome with automated guidance.
• There is some evidence to suggest that mechanical weeding operations can mineralise soil bound nitrogen.
• The impact of inter-row hoeing on ground nesting birds is uncertain. Early indications suggest that skylarks prefer to nest directly adjacent to or in the crop row rather than between rows.
The information contained within this review should enable farmers to make best use of inter-row hoeing in their arable crops.
There are a number of areas that require further research and development:
• The interaction of seed rate and row spacing needs to be confirmed in organic systems.
• Relatively little is known about the mechanisms of weed kill and the detailed interaction between the cultivator blade, the weed and the soil. This is particularly important with the new automated guidance equipment that allows weeding at high forward speeds.
• The timing and frequency of inter-row hoeing has received very little attention. The optimum weed control timings are based on small-plot crop:weed competition studies and need to be verified under field scale management with inter-row hoeing equipment.
• Finally, the impact of inter-row hoeing and widely spaced crop rows on ground-nesting birds has not been looked at directly, but is of importance.

Average output entropy for quantum channels
We study the regularized average Renyi output entropy \bar{S}_{r}^{\reg} of
quantum channels. This quantity gives information about the average noisiness
of the channel output arising from a typical, highly entangled input state in
the limit of infinite dimensions. We find a closed expression for
\beta_{r}^{\reg}, a quantity which we conjecture to be equal to \Srreg. We
find an explicit form for \beta_{r}^{\reg} for some entanglement-breaking
channels, and also for the qubit depolarizing channel as a
function of the parameter . We prove equality of the two quantities in
some cases, in particular we conclude that for both are
