Angular dependence of the magnetization of isotropic superconductors: which is the vortex direction?
We present studies of the dc magnetization of thin platelike samples of the
isotropic type II superconductor PbTl(10%), as a function of the angle between
the normal to the sample and the applied magnetic field . We determine
the magnetization vector by measuring the components both parallel
and normal to in a SQUID magnetometer, and we further decompose it in
its reversible and irreversible contributions. The behavior of the reversible
magnetization is well understood in terms of minimization of the free energy
taking into account geometrical effects. In the mixed state at low fields, the
dominant effect is the line energy gained by shortening the vortices, thus the
flux lines are almost normal to the sample surface. Due to the geometrical
constrain, the irreversible magnetization remains locked to the
sample normal over a wide range of fields and orientations, as already known.
We show that in order to undestand the angle and field dependence of the
modulus of , which is a measure of the vortex pinning, and to
correctly extract the field dependent critical current density, the knowledge
of the modulus and orientation of the induction field is required.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Bilateral symmetry across Aphrodite Terra
There are three main highland areas on Venus: Beta Regio, Ishtar Terra and Aphrodite Terra. The latter is least known and the least mapped, yet existing analyses of Aphrodite Terra based on available Pioneer-Venus orbiter data suggest that it may be the site of extensive rifting. Some of the highest resolution (30 km) PV data (SAR) included most of the western half of Aphrodite Terra. Recent analysis of the SAR data together with Arecibo range-doppler topographic profiling (10 X 100 km horizontal and 10 m vertical resolution) across parts of Aphrodite, further characterized the nature of possible tectonic processes in the equatorial highlands. The existence of distinct topographic and radar morphologic linear discontinuities across the nearly east-west strike of Aphrodite Terra is indicated. Another prominent set of linear features is distinctly parallel to and orthogonal to the ground tracks of the PV spacecraft and are not included because of the possibility that they are artifacts. Study of the northwest trending cross-strike discontinuities (CSD's) and the nature of topographic and morphologic features along their strike suggest the presence of bilateral topographic and morphologic symmetry about the long axis of Aphrodite Terra

Questions of quality in repositories of open educational resources: a literature review
Open educational resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials which are freely available and openly licensed. Repositories of OER (ROER) are platforms that host and facilitate access to these resources. ROER should not just be designed to store this content – in keeping with the aims of the OER movement, they should support educators in embracing open educational practices (OEP) such as searching for and retrieving content that they will reuse, adapt or modify as needed, without economic barriers or copyright restrictions. This paper reviews key literature on OER and ROER, in order to understand the roles ROER are said or supposed to fulfil in relation to furthering the aims of the OER movement. Four themes which should shape repository design are identified, and the following 10 quality indicators (QI) for ROER effectiveness are discussed: featured resources; user evaluation tools; peer review; authorship of the resources; keywords of the resources; use of standardised metadata; multilingualism of the repositories; inclusion of social media tools; specification of the creative commons license; availability of the source code or original files. These QI form the basis of a method for the evaluation of ROER initiatives which, in concert with considerations of achievability and long-term sustainability, should assist in enhancement and development.

Association of a MET genetic variant with autism-associated maternal autoantibodies to fetal brain proteins and cytokine expression.
The contribution of peripheral immunity to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) risk is debated and poorly understood. Some mothers of children with ASD have autoantibodies that react to fetal brain proteins, raising the possibility that a subset of ASD cases may be associated with a maternal antibody response during gestation. The mechanism by which the maternal immune system breaks tolerance has not been addressed. We hypothesized that the mechanism may involve decreased expression of the MET receptor tyrosine kinase, an ASD risk gene that also serves as a key negative regulator of immune responsiveness. In a sample of 365 mothers, including 202 mothers of children with ASD, the functional MET promoter variant rs1858830 C allele was strongly associated with the presence of an ASD-specific 37+73-kDa band pattern of maternal autoantibodies to fetal brain proteins (P=0.003). To determine the mechanism of this genetic association, we measured MET protein and cytokine production in freshly prepared peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 76 mothers of ASD and typically developing children. The MET rs1858830 C allele was significantly associated with MET protein expression (P=0.025). Moreover, decreased expression of the regulatory cytokine IL-10 was associated with both the MET gene C allele (P=0.001) and reduced MET protein levels (P=0.002). These results indicate genetic distinction among mothers who produce ASD-associated antibodies to fetal brain proteins, and suggest a potential mechanism for how a genetically determined decrease in MET protein production may lead to a reduction in immune regulation

Rapid Manufacturing of Silicon Carbide Composites
From the earliest days of SFF technology development, a viable technique for the direct
manufacture of fully-functional parts has been a major technology goal. While direct metal
methods have been demonstrated for a variety of metals including aluminum, steel and titanium,
they have not reached wide commercial application due to processing speed, final material
properties and surface finish. In this paper the development of an SLS-based rapid
manufacturing (RM) platform is reviewed. The core of this platform is a thermosetting binder
system for preform parts in contrast to the thermoplastic materials currently available for SLS.
The preforms may include metal and/or ceramic powders. A variety of fully functional parts
can be prepared from different combinations of materials and post processing steps including
binder pyrolysis, free-standing alloy infiltration, room temperature polymer infiltration and
machining. The main issues of these steps are reviewed followed by a discussion about the
support of RM. This paper is an intermediate report additional materials, applications, process
