    American Professionalism: Contents and Consequences of an Organizational Role Schema

    Research in impression management, sociology, and cultural psychology suggests that socio-historical and cultural conditions have shaped people’s “professional” role schema in the contemporary United States. Building on these literatures, we examined evidence that contemporary professional role schemas reflect historical trends of minimizing personal references at work. In Study 1, working managers reconstructed the office of a target presumed to have (or not have) a professional reputation. Results show when participants’ professional role schemas are invoked, participants assembled the office with significantly fewer objects symbolic of personal life but with similar numbers of work-related and neutral objects. Moreover, this effect was moderated by participant’s tenure in the U.S., suggesting this standard of professionalism may be culturally specific. A second study showed that a job candidate’s success was significantly lowered by the mere suggestion that they would make minor references to personal topics in a hypothetical client meeting.     Two Views of Agency in Patient Advocates' Problem-Handling Work: Storytelling and Rule Use.

    Patient advocates are hospital employees who handle the non-medical problems and complaints that patients and their families experience while receiving care in hospitals. Using qualitative data from interviews and shadowing at teaching and Veterans Health Administration (VA) hospitals, this dissertation develops two accounts of agency in patient advocates' problem-handling work. First, my analyses suggest that patient advocates are organizational storytellers who construct accounts that enlist the participation of others to resolve patient and family members’ problems. I identify several relational practices that patient advocates use to accomplish their problem-handling work. Second, the analyses also suggest that patient advocates draw on organizational rules to construct legitimate paths of action for patients, families and staff in hospitals. Four patterns of rule use emerged, but in different frequencies across teaching and VA hospitals. The different institutional logics in the two hospital types help explain the variation in rule use practices, in that they supply guidelines for the kinds of rule use patient advocates may creatively employ within an organizational setting. This portrait of work is fundamentally relational, in the sense that storytelling and rule use occur primarily through interaction with others. Through these relational practices, patient advocates are able to effect small changes within their respective hospitals.     Sequence analysis of an Archaeal virus isolated from a hypersaline lake in Inner Mongolia, China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We are profoundly ignorant about the diversity of viruses that infect the domain <it>Archaea</it>. Less than 100 have been identified and described and very few of these have had their genomic sequences determined. Here we report the genomic sequence of a previously undescribed archaeal virus.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Haloarchaeal strains with 16S rRNA gene sequences 98% identical to <it>Halorubrum saccharovorum </it>were isolated from a hypersaline lake in Inner Mongolia. Two lytic viruses infecting these were isolated from the lake water. The BJ1 virus is described in this paper. It has an icosahedral head and tail morphology and most likely a linear double stranded DNA genome exhibiting terminal redundancy. Its genome sequence has 42,271 base pairs with a GC content of ~65 mol%. The genome of BJ1 is predicted to encode 70 ORFs, including one for a tRNA. Fifty of the seventy ORFs had no identity to data base entries; twenty showed sequence identity matches to archaeal viruses and to haloarchaea. ORFs possibly coding for an origin of replication complex, integrase, helicase and structural capsid proteins were identified. Evidence for viral integration was obtained.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The virus described here has a very low sequence identity to any previously described virus. Fifty of the seventy ORFs could not be annotated in any way based on amino acid identities with sequences already present in the databases. Determining functions for ORFs such as these is probably easier using a simple virus as a model system.</p

    Sampling multiple life stages significantly increases estimates of marine biodiversity

    Biodiversity assessments are critical for setting conservation priorities, understanding ecosystem function and establishing a baseline to monitor change. Surveys of marine biodiversity that rely almost entirely on sampling adult organisms underestimate diversity because they tend to be limited to habitat types and individuals that can be easily surveyed. Many marine animals have planktonic larvae that can be sampled from the water column at shallow depths. This life stage often is overlooked in surveys but can be used to relatively rapidly document diversity, especially for the many species that are rare or live cryptically as adults. Using DNA barcode data from samples of nemertean worms collected in three biogeographical regions—Northeastern Pacific, the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Tropical Pacific—we found that most species were collected as either benthic adults or planktonic larvae but seldom in both stages. Randomization tests show that this deficit of operational taxonomic units collected as both adults and larvae is extremely unlikely if larvae and adults were drawn from the same pool of species. This effect persists even in well-studied faunas. These results suggest that sampling planktonic larvae offers access to a different subset of species and thus significantly increases estimates of biodiversity compared to sampling adults alone.     Social closeness increases salivary progesterone in humans

    We examined whether interpersonal closeness increases salivary progesterone. One hundred and sixty female college students (80 dyads) were randomly assigned to participate in either a closeness task with a partner versus a neutral task with a partner. Those exposed to the closeness induction had higher levels of progesterone relative to those exposed to the neutral task. Across conditions, progesterone increase one week later predicted the willingness to sacrifice for the partner. These results are discussed in terms of the links between social contact, stress, and health

    Measurement of inclusive D*+- and associated dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA

    Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 280 GeV and a photon virtuality Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.Comment: 32 pages including 6 figure

    Alternative lengthening of telomeres, ATRX loss and H3â K27M mutations in histologically defined pilocytic astrocytoma with anaplasia

    Anaplasia may be identified in a subset of tumors with a presumed pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) component or piloid features, which may be associated with aggressive behavior, but the biologic basis of this change remains unclear. Fiftyâ seven resections from 36 patients (23 M, 13 F, mean age 32 years, range 3â 75) were included. A clinical diagnosis of NF1 was present in 8 (22%). Alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) was assessed by telomereâ specific FISH and/or CISH. A combination of immunohistochemistry, DNA sequencing and FISH were used to study BRAF, ATRX, CDKN2A/p16, mutant IDH1 p.R132H and H3â K27M proteins. ALT was present in 25 (69%) cases and ATRX loss in 20 (57%), mostly in the expected association of ALT+/ATRXâ (20/24, 83%) or ALTâ /ATRX+ (11/11, 100%). BRAF duplication was present in 8 (of 26) (31%). H3â K27M was present in 5 of 32 (16%) cases, all with concurrent ATRX loss and ALT. ALT was also present in 9 (of 11) cases in the benign PA precursor, 7 of which also had ATRX loss in both the precursor and the anaplastic tumor. In a single pediatric case, ALT and ATRX loss developed in the anaplastic component only, and in another adult case, ALT was present in the PAâ A component only, but ATRX was not tested. Features associated with worse prognosis included subtotal resection, adult vs. pediatric, presence of a PA precursor preceding a diagnosis of anaplasia, necrosis, presence of ALT and ATRX expression loss. ALT and ATRX loss, as well as alterations involving the MAPK pathway, are frequent in PA with anaplasia at the time of development of anaplasia or in their precursors. Additionally, a small subset of PA with anaplasia have H3â K27M mutations.     An NLO QCD analysis of inclusive cross-section and jet-production data from the ZEUS experiment

    The ZEUS inclusive differential cross-section data from HERA, for charged and neutral current processes taken with e+ and e- beams, together with differential cross-section data on inclusive jet production in e+ p scattering and dijet production in \gamma p scattering, have been used in a new NLO QCD analysis to extract the parton distribution functions of the proton. The input of jet data constrains the gluon and allows an accurate extraction of \alpha_s(M_Z) at NLO; \alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1183 \pm 0.0028(exp.) \pm 0.0008(model) An additional uncertainty from the choice of scales is estimated as \pm 0.005.     Measurement of event shapes in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

    Inclusive event-shape variables have been measured in the current region of the Breit frame for neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using an integrated luminosity of 45.0 pb^-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The variables studied included thrust, jet broadening and invariant jet mass. The kinematic range covered was 10 < Q^2 < 20,480 GeV^2 and 6.10^-4 < x < 0.6, where Q^2 is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and x is the Bjorken variable. The Q dependence of the shape variables has been used in conjunction with NLO perturbative calculations and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative corrections (`power corrections') to investigate the validity of this approach.Comment: 7+25 pages, 6 figure

    Dissociation of virtual photons in events with a leading proton at HERA

    The ZEUS detector has been used to study dissociation of virtual photons in events with a leading proton, gamma^* p -> X p, in e^+p collisions at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities in two ranges, 0.03<Q^2<0.60 GeV^2 and 2<Q^2<100 GeV^2, with M_X>1.5 GeV, where M_X is the mass of the hadronic final state, X. Events were required to have a leading proton, detected in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer, carrying at least 90% of the incoming proton energy. The cross section is presented as a function of t, the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, Phi, the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and the proton scattering plane, and Q^2. The data are presented in terms of the diffractive structure function, F_2^D(3). A next-to-leading-order QCD fit to the higher-Q^2 data set and to previously published diffractive charm production data is presented
