A bilateral shear layer between two parallel Couette flows
We consider a shear layer of a kind not previously studied to our knowledge.
Contrary to the classical free shear layer, the width of the shear zone does
not vary in the streamwise direction but rather exhibits a lateral variation.
Based on some simplifying assumptions, an analytic solution has been derived
for the new shear layer. These assumptions have been justified by a comparison
with numerical solutions of the full Navier-Stokes equations, which accord with
the analytical solution to better than 1% in the entire domain. An explicit
formula is found for the width of the shear zone as a function of wall-normal
coordinate. This width is independent of wall velocities in the laminar regime.
Preliminary results for a co-current laminar-turbulent shear layer in the same
geometry are also presented. Shear-layer instabilities were then developed and
resulted in an unsteady mixing zone at the interface between the two co-current

One step multiderivative methods for first order ordinary differential equations
A family of one-step multiderivative methods based on Padé approximants to the exponential function is developed.
The methods are extrapolated and analysed for use in PECE mode.
Error constants and stability intervals are calculated and the combinations compared with well known linear multi-step combinations and combinations using high accuracy Newton-Cotes quadrature formulas as correctors.

Dynamical effects induced by long range activation in a nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion system
We both show experimentally and numerically that the time scales separation
introduced by long range activation can induce oscillations and excitability in
nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion systems that would otherwise only exhibit
bistability. Namely, we show that the Chlorite-Tetrathionate reaction, where
autocatalytic species diffuses faster than the substrates, the spatial
bistability domain in the nonequilibrium phase diagram is extended with
oscillatory and excitability domains. A simple model and a more realistic model
qualitatively account for the observed behavior. The latter model provides
quantitative agreement with the experiments.Comment: 19 pages + 9 figure
Experimental Demonstration of Signal-to-Noise-Ratio Improvement of Fourier-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography
A recent advance in optical coherence tomography (OCT), termed swept-source
OCT, is generalized into a new technique, Fourier-domain OCT. It represents a
realization of a full-field OCT system in place of the conventional serial
image acquisition in transverse directions typically implemented in
"flying-spot" mode. To realize the full-field image acquisition, a Fourier
holography system illuminated with a swept-source is employed instead of a
Michelson interferometer commonly used in OCT. Fourier-domain OCT offers a new
leap in signal-to-noise ratio improvement, as compared to flying-spot OCT
systems. This paper presents experimental evidence that the signal-to-noise

Balancing competing policy demands: the case of sustainable public sector food procurement.
A focus on market-based green growth strategies to pursue sustainability goals neglects the pursuit of understanding how human health is interwoven with the health of eco-systems to deliver sustainability goals. The article argues that clarifying the difference between green and sustainable public sector food procurement, with political continuity that supports and enables policymakers and practitioners to take an incremental approach to change, makes an important contribution to delivering more sustainable food systems and better public health nutrition. Five European case studies demonstrate the reality of devising and implementing innovative approaches to sustainable public sector food procurement and the effects of cultural and political framings. How legislation is enacted at the national level and interpreted at the local level is a key driver for sustainable procurement. Transition is dependent on political will and leadership and an infrastructure that can balance the economic, environmental and social drivers to effect change. The development of systems and indicators to measure change, reforms to EU directives on procurement, and the relationship between green growth strategies and sustainable diets are also discussed. The findings show the need to explore how consistent definitions for green public procurement and sustainable public procurement can be refined and standardized in order to support governments at all levels in reviewing and analyzing their current food procurement strategies and practices to improve sustainability
Al-Mn-based decagonal quasicrystal in AZ magnesium alloys and its nucleation on Al8Mn5 during solidification
Manganese is added to many magnesium alloys to control impurity iron, but its effects on phase transformations and microstructure formation remain incompletely understood. Here we show that an Al-Mn-based decagonal quasicrystal (d-QC) forms in the late stages of solidification in AZ31 and AZ91 magnesium alloys at relatively slow cooling rates, here down to 0.1 K/s. The d-QC has a periodicity of ⌠12 Ă
, grew as decagonal rods and commonly shared interfaces with Al8Mn5 and eutectic Mg17Al12. A reproducible orientation relationship (OR) was measured with Al8Mn5 only, indicating that the d-QC nucleated on Al8Mn5. The OR is consistent with the structural relationship between quasicrystals and gamma brasses and gives the d-QC nucleation advantages over LT-Al11Mn4 during solidification. A subsequent heat treatment at 410 °C caused both Al8Mn5 and the d-QC to transform into LT-Al11Mn4
Learning from the early adopters: developing the digital practitioner
This paper explores how Sharpe and Beethamâs Digital Literacies Framework which was derived to model studentsâ digital literacies, can be applied to lecturersâ digital literacy practices. Data from a small-scale phenomenological study of higher education lecturers who used Web 2.0 in their teaching and learning practices are used to examine if this pyramid model represents their motivations for adopting technology-enhanced learning in their pedagogic practices. The paper argues that whilst Sharpe and Beethamâs model has utility in many regards, these lecturers were mainly motivated by the desire to achieve their pedagogic goals rather than by a desire to become a digital practitioner

Mechanical design of a high field common coil magnet
A common coil design for high field 2-in-1 accelerator magnets has been previously presented as a "conductor-friendly" option for high field magnets applicable for a Very Large Hadron Collider. This paper presents the mechanical design for a 14 tesla 2-in-1 dipole based on the common coil design approach. The magnet will use a high current density Nb/sub 3/Sn conductor. The design addresses mechanical issues particular to the common coil geometry: horizontal support against coil edges, vertical preload on coil faces, end loading and support, and coil stresses and strains. The magnet is the second in a series of racetrack coil magnets that will provide experimental verification of the common coil design approach. (9 refs)
Awareness and uptake of layered HIV prevention programming for young women: analysis of population-based surveys in three DREAMS settings in Kenya and South Africa
Background
The DREAMS Partnership is an ambitious effort to deliver combinations of biomedical, behavioural and structural interventions to reduce HIV incidence among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). To inform multi-sectoral programming at scale, across diverse settings in Kenya and South Africa, we identified who the programme is reaching, with which interventions and in what combinations.
Methods
Randomly-selected cohorts of 606 AGYW aged 10â14âyears and 1081 aged 15â22âyears in Nairobi and 2184 AGYW aged 13â22âyears in uMkhanyakude, KwaZulu-Natal, were enrolled in 2017, after ~â1âyear of DREAMS implementation. In Gem, western Kenya, population-wide cross-sectional survey data were collected during roll-out in 2016 (n =â1365 AGYW 15â22âyears). We summarised awareness and invitation to participate in DREAMS, uptake of interventions categorised by the DREAMS core package, and uptake of a subset of âprimaryâ interventions. We stratified by age-group and setting, and compared across AGYW characteristics.
Results
Awareness of DREAMS was higher among younger women (Nairobi: 89%v78%, aged 15-17v18â22âyears; uMkhanyakude: 56%v31%, aged 13-17v18â22; and Gem: 28%v25%, aged 15-17v18â22, respectively).
HIV testing was the most accessed intervention in Nairobi and Gem (77% and 85%, respectively), and school-based HIV prevention in uMkhanyakude (60%). Among those invited, participation in social asset building was >â50%; >â60% accessed â„2 core package categories, but few accessed all primary interventions intended for their age-group. Parenting programmes and community mobilisation, including those intended for male partners, were accessed infrequently.
In Nairobi and uMkhanyakude, AGYW were more likely to be invited to participate and accessed more categories if they were: aged <â18âyears, in school and experienced socio-economic vulnerabilities. Those who had had sex, or a pregnancy, were less likely to be invited to participate but accessed more categories.
Conclusions
In representative population-based samples, awareness and uptake of DREAMS were high after 1 year of implementation. Evidence of âlayeringâ (receiving multiple interventions from the DREAMS core package), particularly among more socio-economically vulnerable AGYW, indicate that intervention packages can be implemented at scale, for intended recipients, in real-world contexts. Challenges remain for higher coverage and greater âlayeringâ, including among older, out-of-school AGYW, and community-based programmes for families and men
