La structure générale des profils ferrallitiques s'explique par le recyclage biologique des principaux éléments intervenant dans les équilibres minéraux-solutions, et la plupart des minéraux secondaires des sols ferrallitiques sont en rééquilibrage constant avec les conditions du milieu. La genèse des podzols est liée à une exportation précoce des composés organo-métalliques formés dans les horizons de surface, dépendante de la dynamique de l'eau à l'échelle des systèmes.     Self-oscillations in field emission nanowire mechanical resonators: a nanometric DC-AC conversion

    We report the observation of self-oscillations in a bottom-up nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) during field emission driven by a constant applied voltage. An electromechanical model is explored that explains the phenomenon and that can be directly used to develop integrated devices. In this first study we have already achieved ~50% DC/AC (direct to alternative current) conversion. Electrical self-oscillations in NEMS open up a new path for the development of high speed, autonomous nanoresonators, and signal generators and show that field emission (FE) is a powerful tool for building new nano-components

    A modern Fizeau experiment for education and outreach purposes

    On the occasion of the laser's 50th anniversary, we performed a modern Fizeau experiment, measuring the speed of light with a laser beam passing over the city centre of Marseille. For a round trip distance of almost five kilometers, the measurement has reached an uncertainty of about 104^{-4}, mainly due to atmospheric fluctuations.     Singular Structure and Enhanced Friedel Oscillations in the Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

    We calculate the leading order corrections (in rsr_s) to the static polarization Π(q,0,)\Pi^{*}(q,0,), with dynamically screened interactions, for the two-dimensional electron gas. The corresponding diagrams all exhibit singular logarithmic behavior in their derivatives at q=2kFq=2 k_F and provide significant enhancement to the proper polarization particularly at low densities. At a density of rs=3r_s=3, the contribution from the leading order {\em fluctuational} diagrams exceeds both the zeroth order (Lindhard) response and the self-energy and exchange contributions. We comment on the importance of these diagrams in two-dimensions and make comparisons to an equivalent three-dimensional electron gas; we also consider the impact these finding have on Π(q,0)\Pi^{*}(q,0) computed to all orders in perturbation theory

    Une enquête nutritionnelle nationale a été réalisée au Congo en milieu rural en 1987 sur un échantillon représentatif des enfants de moins de cinq ans. Dans une perspective de surveillance nutritionnelle, son objectif principal était de fournir des données de base pour l'orientation et l'évaluation ultérieure d'impact du programme national d'éducation nutritionnelle et de surveillance de la croissance (NUTED). Les résultats essentiels portent ainsi sur : l'estimation de l'état nutritionnel mesuré par des indices anthropométriques standardisés; le type, l'ampleur et la distribution des malnutritions; la recherche de facteurs associés aux malnutritions en vue d'une identification des groupes et zones à risque. D'autres données sont également présentées dans les domaines d'intervention de NUTED : modes alimentaires et conduite du sevrage; diarrhées et réhydratation par voie orale; surveillance de la croissance.     Equilibrium correlations in charged fluids coupled to the radiation field

    We provide an exact microscopic statistical treatment of particle and field correlations in a system of quantum charges in equilibrium with a classical radiation field. Using the Feynman-Kac-Ito representation of the Gibbs weight, the system of particles is mapped onto a collection of random charged wires. The field degrees of freedom can be integrated out, providing an effective pairwise magnetic potential. We then calculate the contribution of the transverse field coupling to the large-distance particle correlations.     Self-consistent equation for an interacting Bose gas

    We consider interacting Bose gas in thermal equilibrium assuming a positive and bounded pair potential V(r)V(r) such that 0<\int d\br V(r) = a<\infty. Expressing the partition function by the Feynman-Kac functional integral yields a classical-like polymer representation of the quantum gas. With Mayer graph summation techniques, we demonstrate the existence of a self-consistent relation ρ(μ)=F(μaρ(μ))\rho (\mu)=F(\mu-a\rho(\mu)) between the density ρ\rho and the chemical potential μ\mu, valid in the range of convergence of Mayer series. The function FF is equal to the sum of all rooted multiply connected graphs. Using Kac's scaling V_{\gamma}(\br)=\gamma^{3}V(\gamma r) we prove that in the mean-field limit γ0\gamma\to 0 only tree diagrams contribute and function FF reduces to the free gas density. We also investigate how to extend the validity of the self-consistent relation beyond the convergence radius of Mayer series (vicinity of Bose-Einstein condensation) and study dominant corrections to mean field. At lowest order, the form of function FF is shown to depend on single polymer partition function for which we derive lower and upper bounds and on the resummation of ring diagrams which can be analytically performed.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Screening of classical Casimir forces by electrolytes in semi-infinite geometries

    We study the electrostatic Casimir effect and related phenomena in equilibrium statistical mechanics of classical (non-quantum) charged fluids. The prototype model consists of two identical dielectric slabs in empty space (the pure Casimir effect) or in the presence of an electrolyte between the slabs. In the latter case, it is generally believed that the long-ranged Casimir force due to thermal fluctuations in the slabs is screened by the electrolyte into some residual short-ranged force. The screening mechanism is based on a "separation hypothesis": thermal fluctuations of the electrostatic field in the slabs can be treated separately from the pure image effects of the "inert" slabs on the electrolyte particles. In this paper, by using a phenomenological approach under certain conditions, the separation hypothesis is shown to be valid. The phenomenology is tested on a microscopic model in which the conducting slabs and the electrolyte are modelled by the symmetric Coulomb gases of point-like charges with different particle fugacities. The model is solved in the high-temperature Debye-H\"uckel limit (in two and three dimensions) and at the free fermion point of the Thirring representation of the two-dimensional Coulomb gas. The Debye-H\"uckel theory of a Coulomb gas between dielectric walls is also solved.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure

    Equation of state of a strongly magnetized hydrogen plasma

    The influence of a constant uniform magnetic field on the thermodynamic properties of a partially ionized hydrogen plasma is studied. Using the method of Green' s function various interaction contributions to the thermodynamic functions are calculated. The equation of state of a quantum magnetized plasma is presented within the framework of a low density expansion up to the order e^4 n^2 and, additionally, including ladder type contributions via the bound states in the case of strong magnetic fields (2.35*10^{5} T << B << 2.35*10^{9} T). We show that for high densities (n=10^{27-30} m^{-3}) and temperatures T=10^5 - 10^6 K typical for the surface of neutron stars nonideality effects as, e.g., Debye screening must be taken into account.Comment: 12 pages, 2 Postscript figures. uses revtex, to appear in Phys.     Large deviations for many Brownian bridges with symmetrised initial-terminal condition

    Consider a large system of NN Brownian motions in Rd\mathbb{R}^d with some non-degenerate initial measure on some fixed time interval [0,β][0,\beta] with symmetrised initial-terminal condition. That is, for any ii, the terminal location of the ii-th motion is affixed to the initial point of the σ(i)\sigma(i)-th motion, where σ\sigma is a uniformly distributed random permutation of 1,...,N1,...,N. Such systems play an important role in quantum physics in the description of Boson systems at positive temperature 1/β1/\beta. In this paper, we describe the large-N behaviour of the empirical path measure (the mean of the Dirac measures in the NN paths) and of the mean of the normalised occupation measures of the NN motions in terms of large deviations principles. The rate functions are given as variational formulas involving certain entropies and Fenchel-Legendre transforms. Consequences are drawn for asymptotic independence statements and laws of large numbers. In the special case related to quantum physics, our rate function for the occupation measures turns out to be equal to the well-known Donsker-Varadhan rate function for the occupation measures of one motion in the limit of diverging time. This enables us to prove a simple formula for the large-N asymptotic of the symmetrised trace of eβHN{\rm e}^{-\beta \mathcal{H}_N}, where HN\mathcal{H}_N is an NN-particle Hamilton operator in a trap
