Tuning the Filter Responses with Graphene Based Resonators
Graphene-metal combined waveguide resonators were proposed earlier, as a solution for obtaining frequency tunable resonator responses at the sub-millimeter-wave frequencies. A methodology for combining these waveguide resonators into the frequency tunable filters has been studied subsequently. Here, we discuss the possibilities and limitations of this type of waveguide resonators, illustrated by several examples of tunable filter designs
Developing Coalitions: Computing Organizational Potential
Per Kotter’s eight-step model for leading change, there is a need for a guiding coalition, which is a social network of agents for change. The proposed presentation discusses a computational approach to describing the potential of a network’s structural position for organizational influence. A simulation of an exemplary index capable of such analysis is presented by the combination of widely accepted social network measures. RStudio was used for the necessary calculations and the social network visualizations
Tolerant to air σ-alkane complexes by surface modification of single crystalline solid-state molecular organometallics using vapour-phase cationic polymerisation : SMOM@polymer
Vapour-phase surface-initiated cationic polymerisation of ethylvinylether occurs at single-crystals of the σ-alkane complex [Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)(NBA)][BArF4]. This new surface interface makes these normally very air sensitive materials tolerant to air, while also allowing for onward single-crystal to single-crystal reactivity at metal sites within the lattice
Generation of twenty four induced pluripotent stem cell lines from twenty four members of the Lothian 4 Birth Cohort 1936
Cognitive decline is among the most feared aspects of ageing. We have generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from 24 people from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936, whose cognitive ability was tested in childhood and in older age. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were reprogrammed using non-integrating oriP/EBNA1 backbone plasmids expressing six iPSC reprogramming factors (OCT3/4 (POU5F1), SOX2, KLF4, L-Myc, shp53, Lin28, SV40LT). All lines demonstrated STR matched karyotype and pluripotency was validated by multiple methods. These iPSC lines are a valuable resource to study molecular mechanisms underlying individual differences in cognitive ageing and resilience to age-related neurodegenerative diseases
Effects of Benzopyrene-7,8-Diol-9,10-Epoxide (BPDE) In Vitro and of Maternal Smoking In Vivo on Micronuclei Frequencies in Fetal Cord Blood
Up to 20% of pregnant women smoke and there is indirect evidence that certain
tobacco-specific metabolites can cross the placental barrier and are genotoxic to
the fetus. The presence of micronuclei results from chromosome damage and
reflects the degree of underlying genetic instability. Fetal blood was obtained
from the cord blood of 143 newborns (102 from nonsmoking mothers and 41 from
mothers smoking >10 cigarettes/d during pregnancy). The micronucleus assay was
performed following the guidelines established by the Human MicroNucleus project
with modifications. To test the micronucleus assay, we evaluated the effect of a
range of benzopyrene-7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide concentrations (from 3.125 nM to 4
microM) on cord blood from nonsmoking mothers. This validation showed that the
number of micronuclei and apoptotic cells increased with
benzopyrene-7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide dose (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.001, respectively);
the minimal detectable effect was induced by 12.5 nM
benzopyrene-7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide. In our sample, the number of MN was
significantly higher in the 41 cord blood samples from mothers who smoked during
pregnancy [smokers: 4 (1; 10.5); nonsmokers: 3 (0; 8); p = 0.016]. Therefore, the
data reported herein support the hypothesis that tobacco compounds are able to
induce chromosomal losses and breaks that are detectable as an increased number
of micronuclei
Anticipating and Adapting to the Future Impacts of Climate Change on the Health, Security and Welfare of Low Elevation Coastal Zone (LECZ) Communities in Southeastern USA
Low elevation coastal zones (LECZ) are extensive throughout the southeastern United States. LECZ communities are threatened by inundation from sea level rise, storm surge, wetland degradation, land subsidence, and hydrological flooding. Communication among scientists, stakeholders, policy makers and minority and poor residents must improve. We must predict processes spanning the ecological, physical, social, and health sciences. Communities need to address linkages of (1) human and socioeconomic vulnerabilities; (2) public health and safety; (3) economic concerns; (4) land loss; (5) wetland threats; and (6) coastal inundation. Essential capabilities must include a network to assemble and distribute data and model code to assess risk and its causes, support adaptive management, and improve the resiliency of communities. Better communication of information and understanding among residents and officials is essential. Here we review recent background literature on these matters and offer recommendations for integrating natural and social sciences. We advocate for a cyber-network of scientists, modelers, engineers, educators, and stakeholders from academia, federal state and local agencies, non-governmental organizations, residents, and the private sector. Our vision is to enhance future resilience of LECZ communities by offering approaches to mitigate hazards to human health, safety and welfare and reduce impacts to coastal residents and industries

Reimagining human capacity for location-aware aural pattern recognition: A case for immersive exocentric sonification
The following paper presents a cross-disciplinary snapshot of
21st century research in sonification and leverages the review
to identify a new immersive exocentric approach to studying
human capacity to perceive spatial aural cues. The paper
further defines immersive exocentric sonification, highlights
its unique affordances, and presents an argument for its
potential to fundamentally change the way we understand
and study the human capacity for location-aware audio
pattern recognition. Finally, the paper describes an example
of an externally funded research project that aims to tackle
this newfound research whitespace
Reconfigurable matching networks for wireless transmitters
In this paper a reconfigurable input matching network (IMN) for power amplifiers (PA) is designed and simulated. An IMN is realized as T-section, where reconfigurability is achieved by switch element (PIN diode switch). When PIN diode switch is ON the PA operates at 3.45 GHz. In PIN diode switch OFF state the PA operates at 3.75 GHz. The S-parameters and power added efficiency (PAE), of about 45% and 50% at 3.45 GHz and 3.75 GHz respectively, are presented
