    Investigation into diode pumped modelocked ND based laser oscillators for the CLIC photoinjector system

    The photo-injector system envisaged for the proposed CLIC linear e+-e- accelerator at CERN has a demanding set of specifications on output pulse structure, power and timing stability. This paper reports on results obtained with quasi-CW diode pumped laser oscillators with output stabilisation. A 300W 804nm diode array stack is used to side pump Nd:YLF (1047nm) crystals with 200μs pulses at 100Hz repetition rate. Using feedback from the laser output to control an acousto-optic loss modulator in the cavity, start-up spiking and Q-switched behaviour is suppressed. Preliminary results obtained on incorporation of a saturable absorbing mirror for passive modelocking are presented

    Motion of magnetotactic bacteria swarms in an external field

    Magnetotactic bacteria moving on circular orbits form hydrodynamically bound states. When close to a surface and with the tilting of the field in a direction close to the perpendicular to this surface these swarms move perpendicularly to the tilting angle. We describe quantitatively this motion by a continuum model with couple stress arising from the torques produced by the rotary motors of the amphitrichous magnetotactic bacteria. The model not only correctly describes the change of direction of swarm motion while inverting the tangential field but also predicts reasonable value of the torque produced by the rotary motors

    Personal Exposure to Dust and Endotoxin in Robusta and Arabica Coffee Processing Factories in Tanzania

    Introduction: Endotoxin exposure associated with organic dust exposure has been studied in several industries. Coffee cherries that are dried directly after harvest may differ in dust and endotoxin emissions to those that are peeled and washed before drying. The aim of this study was to measure personal total dust and endotoxin levels and to evaluate their determinants of exposure in coffee processing factories. Methods: Using Sidekick Casella pumps at a flow rate of 2l/min, total dust levels were measured in the workers’ breathing zone throughout the shift. Endotoxin was analyzed using the kinetic chromogenic Limulus amebocyte lysate assay. Separate linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate exposure determinants for dust and endotoxin. Results: Total dust and endotoxin exposure were significantly higher in Robusta than in Arabica coffee factories (geometric mean 3.41 mg/m³ and 10 800 EU/m3 versus 2.10 mg/m³ and 1400 EU/m³, respectively). Dry pre-processed coffee and differences in work tasks explained 30% of the total variance for total dust and 71% of the variance for endotoxin exposure. High exposure in Robusta processing is associated with the dry pre-processing method used after harvest. Conclusions: Dust and endotoxin exposure is high, in particular when processing dry preprocessed coffee. Minimization of dust emissions and use of efficient dust exhaust systems are important to prevent the development of respiratory system impairment in workers

    Supplementation of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), vitamin D<sub>3</sub> and uridine in combination with six weeks of cognitive and motor training in prepubescent children: a pilot study

    BACKGROUND: Learning and memory have been shown to be influenced by combination of dietary supplements and exercise in animal models, but there is little available evidence from human subjects. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of combining a motor- and cognitive exercise program with dietary supplementation consisting of 500 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), 10 μg vitamin D3 and 1000 mg uridine (DDU-supplement) in 16 prepubescent children (age 8–11 years). METHODS: We designed a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded study lasting 6 weeks in which DDU-supplement or placebo was ingested daily. During the intervention period, all children trained approximately 30 min 3 days/week using an internet-based cognitive and motor training program (Mitii). Prior to and post the intervention period dietary record, blood sampling, physical exercise tests and motor and cognitive tests were performed. RESULTS: Fourteen of the 16 children completed the intervention and ingested the supplement as required. 6 weeks DDU-supplementation resulted in a significant increase in the blood concentration of vitamin D2+3 and DHA (p = 0.023 and p &lt; 0.001, respectively). Power calculation based on one of the cognitive tasks revealed a proper sample size of 26 children. CONCLUSION: All children showed improved performance in the trained motor- and cognitive tasks, but it was not possible to demonstrate any significant effects on the cognitive tests from the dietary supplementation.     Design of feedback insensitive InP ring laser

    The optical isolators used to protect semiconductor lasers against optical feedback cannot be integrated. Therefore we propose to fabricate a laser that has a strongly reduced sensitivity to feedback. Simulations show that such a device can be realized by employing a ring laser in which the clockwise and counterclockwise modes are not coupled. To achieve unidirectional lasing, this work proposes to use an intra cavity weak optical isolator based on two phase modulators that are driven 90 degrees out of phase. Simulations show up to 3% of intensity feedback can be tolerated without any distinguishable effect on the laser light

    An introduction to InP-based generic integration technology

    Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are considered as the way to make photonic systems or subsystems cheap and ubiquitous. PICs still are several orders of magnitude more expensive than their microelectronic counterparts, which has restricted their application to a few niche markets. Recently, a novel approach in photonic integration is emerging which will reduce the R&D and prototyping costs and the throughput time of PICs by more than an order of magnitude. It will bring the application of PICs that integrate complex and advanced photonic functionality on a single chip within reach for a large number of small and larger companies and initiate a breakthrough in the application of Photonic ICs. The paper explains the concept of generic photonic integration technology using the technology developed by the COBRA research institute of TU Eindhoven as an example, and it describes the current status and prospects of generic InP-based integration technology
