An update to the fatty acid profiles of bovine retail milk in the United Kingdom: implications for nutrition in different age and gender groups
This study investigated the effect of UK dairy production system, month, and their interaction, on retail milk fatty acid (FA) profile throughout the year. Milk samples (n=120) from four conventional (CON), four organic (ORG) and two free-range (FR) brands were collected monthly. ORG milk had more nutritionally-desirable polyunsaturated FA, including rumenic acid and the omega-3 PUFA α-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids, and less of the nutritionally-undesirable palmitic acid. Milk FA profile was similar between FR and CON, but FR milk had less SFA and/or palmitic acid, and/or greater α-linolenic and rumenic acids in certain months within the peak-grazing season. According to the measured milk FA profiles and UK milk fat intakes, milk and dairy products contribute around one-third of the maximum recommended saturated FA intake. A small increased intake of beneficial PUFA may be expected by consuming ORG milk but human health implications from such differences are unknown

On October 13, 2011, BYU Studies sponsored a program reviewing Terryl Givens’s important Oxford book on the idea of the premortal existence of souls in various lines of Western philosophy and religion. Because this first volume of its kind covers literature from so many different civilizations, the editors of BYU Studies saw no way to do this book justice without involving a panel of reviewers from several disciplines. After portions of Robert Fuller’s forthcoming review in Church History were read, the program proceeded with reviews, responses, and open discussion
Physical Health Problems Among People With Severe Mental Illnesses: Race, Gender, and Implications for Practice
BACKGROUND: Individuals with severe mental illnesses experience high rates of chronic health conditions; however, the extent to which risk of chronic physical health problems varies by race and gender among these individuals is understudied. AIMS: This study examines variations in health problems by race and gender among individuals with severe mental illnesses. METHOD: Administrative data, which included blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values, were obtained from 603 individuals with serious mental illnesses who received integrated health and behavioral health services from a large mental health agency in the Midwest. Bivariate and multivariate statistical models were used to examine variation in physical health problems by race and gender. RESULTS: Compared with men, women with severe mental illnesses were more likely to have BMI levels indicating obesity or morbid obesity (p < .001). Compared with White participants, Black participants were less likely to have high HbA1c levels (p < .001) but were more likely to have high blood pressure (p < .001). Among race and gender groups, Black women were more likely to have high BMI (p < .05), Black men were more likely to have high blood pressure (p < .001), and White men were more likely to have high HbA1c levels (p < .01) when holding constant all other variables. CONCLUSIONS: There is evidence that types and severity of physical health problems among individuals with severe mental illnesses varies by race and gender. Replication of these results and more research is needed to ensure that health-related education and integrated health and behavioral health interventions meet the needs of individuals with serious mental illnesses
Monte Carlo study of the Widom-Rowlinson fluid using cluster methods
The Widom-Rowlinson model of a fluid mixture is studied using a new cluster
algorithm that is a generalization of the invaded cluster algorithm previously
applied to Potts models. Our estimate of the critical exponents for the
two-component fluid are consistent with the Ising universality class in two and

Temporal Resolution In Preschool Children
The purpose of this study was to examine temporal resolution in normal hearing pre-school children. Word recognition was evaluated in quiet and in spectrally identical continuous and interrupted noise at signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) of 10, 0, and -10 dB. Sixteen children four to five years of age and eight adults participated. Performance decreased with decreasing S/N. At poorer S/Ns, participants demonstrated superior performance or a release from masking in the interrupted noise. Adults performed better than children, yet, the release from masking was equivalent. Collectively these findings are consistent with the notion that preschool children suffer from poorer processing efficiency rather than temporal resolution per se

Dairy consumption and cardiometabolic diseases: systematic review and updated meta-analyses of prospective cohort studies
Purpose of Review Dairy products contain both beneficial and harmful nutrients in relation to cardiometabolic diseases. Here, we
provide the latest scientific evidence regarding the relationship between dairy products and cardiometabolic diseases by
reviewing the literature and updating meta-analyses of observational studies.
Recent Findings We updated our previous meta-analyses of cohort studies on type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease (CHD), and
stroke with nine studies and confirmed previous results. Total dairy and low-fat dairy (per 200 g/d) were inversely associated with
a 3–4% lower risk of diabetes. Yogurt was non-linearly inversely associatedwith diabetes (RR = 0.86, 95%CI: 0.83–0.90 at 80 g/
d). Total dairy and milk were not associated with CHD (RR~1.0). An increment of 200 g of daily milk intake was associated with
an 8% lower risk of stroke.
Summary The latest scientific evidence confirmed neutral or beneficial associations between dairy products and risk of cardiometabolic

A Low Concentration of Ethanol Impairs Learning but Not Motor and Sensory Behavior in Drosophila Larvae
Drosophila melanogaster has proven to be a useful model system for the genetic analysis of ethanol-associated behaviors. However, past studies have focused on the response of the adult fly to large, and often sedating, doses of ethanol. The pharmacological effects of low and moderate quantities of ethanol have remained understudied. In this study, we tested the acute effects of low doses of ethanol (∼7 mM internal concentration) on Drosophila larvae. While ethanol did not affect locomotion or the response to an odorant, we observed that ethanol impaired associative olfactory learning when the heat shock unconditioned stimulus (US) intensity was low but not when the heat shock US intensity was high. We determined that the reduction in learning at low US intensity was not a result of ethanol anesthesia since ethanol-treated larvae responded to the heat shock in the same manner as untreated animals. Instead, low doses of ethanol likely impair the neuronal plasticity that underlies olfactory associative learning. This impairment in learning was reversible indicating that exposure to low doses of ethanol does not leave any long lasting behavioral or physiological effects
Does millet consumption contribute to raising blood hemoglobin levels compared to regular refined staples?: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Millets are recognized for their health and nutritional values, and the United Nations declared 2023 the International Year of Millets. Among the several health and nutritional benefits of millets, their impact on hemoglobin concentration is important since anemia is a major public health issue in many countries. To investigate the effect of millet (including sorghum) consumption on hemoglobin concentration in the blood, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Thirteen published studies featuring randomized control trials involving 590 individuals in the intervention group and 549 control individuals were eligible for the meta-analysis. The difference-in-differences analysis revealed highly significant (p < 0.01) positive effects of millet consumption on hemoglobin concentration, with an effect size of +0.68 standardized mean difference units. The change in hemoglobin concentration observed in the intervention group was +13.6%, which is statistically significant (p < 0.0005), compared to that in the control group, which was +4.8% and not statistically significant (p = 0.1362). In four studies, the consumption of millets in the intervention group demonstrated a change from mild anemia to normal status among children, whereas there was no change in the control group. The findings provide evidence that the consumption of millets can improve blood hemoglobin concentration, likely resulting from increased iron intake. Further research is needed involving the assessment of iron content and bioavailability to better understand the effect variation among millet types and the mechanisms involved

Association between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease events, diabetes and all-cause mortality
Purpose The association between egg consumption and
cardiovascular disease (CVD) or type 2 diabetes (T2D)
remains controversial. We investigated the association
between egg consumption and risk of CVD (primary outcome),
T2D and mortality in the Caerphilly prospective
cohort study (CAPS) and National Diet and Nutritional
Survey (NDNS).
Methods CAPS included 2512 men aged 45–59 years
(1979–1983). Dietary intake, disease incidence and mortality
were updated at 5-year intervals. NDNS included 754
adults aged 19–64 years from 2008 to 2012.
Results Men free of CVD (n = 1781) were followed up for
a mean of 22.8 years, egg consumption was not associated
with new incidence of CVD (n = 715), mortality (n = 1028)
or T2D (n = 120). When stroke (n = 248), MI (n = 477),heart failure (n = 201) were investigated separately, no
associations between egg consumption and stroke and MI
were identified, however, increased risk of stroke in subjects
with T2D and/or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT, fasting
plasma glucose ≥ 6.1 mmol/L), adjusted hazard ratios (95%
CI) were 1.0 (reference), 1.09 (0.41, 2.88), 0.96 (0.37, 2.50),
1.39 (0.54, 3.56) and 2.87 (1.13, 7.27) for egg intake (n) of
0 ≤ n ≤ 1, 1 < n ≤ 2, 2 < n ≤ 3, 3 < n < 5, and n ≥ 5 eggs/wk,
respectively (P = 0.01). In addition, cross-sectional analyses
revealed that higher egg consumption was significantly
associated with elevated fasting glucose in those with T2D
and/or IGT (CAPS: baseline P = 0.02 and 5-year P = 0.04;
NDNS: P = 0.05).
Conclusions Higher egg consumption was associated with
higher blood glucose in subjects with T2D and/or IGT. The
increased incidence of stroke with higher egg consumption
among T2D and/or IGT sub-group warrants further
investigation
