Soil resources and potential for agricultural development in Bahr El Jebel in southern Sudan, Jonglei Canal project area
The author has identified the following significant results. Fourteen LANDSAT scenes were used to produce mosaics of the 167, 474 sq km study area. These were black and white MSS 7 images and false color composite images. Five major soil-landscape units were delineated on the mosaics, and these were subdivided into a total of 40 soil mapping units. Aerial reconnaissance was useful in defining boundaries between mapping units and in estimating the proportion of the various soils which composed each mapping unit. Ground surveying permitted first-hand observation of major soils and sampling for quantitative laboratory analysis. Soil interpretations were made, including properties, potentials, and limitations
Polls and the political process: the use of opinion polls by political parties and mass media organizations in European postâcommunist societies (1990â95)
Opinion polling occupies a significant role within the political process of most liberal-capitalist societies, where it is used by governments, parties and the mass media alike. This paper examines the extent to which polls are used for the same purposes in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and in particular, for bringing political elites and citizens together. It argues that these political elites are more concerned with using opinion polls for gaining competitive advantage over their rivals and for reaffirming their political power, than for devolving political power to citizens and improving the general processes of democratization
Search for the Rare Decays KL->pi0pi0mu+mu- and KL->pi0pi0X0->pi0pi0mu+mu-
The KTeV E799 experiment has conducted a search for the rare decays
KL->pi0pi0mu+mu- and KL->pi0pi0X0->pi0pi0mu+mu-, where the X0 is a possible new
neutral boson that was reported by the HyperCP experiment with a mass of (214.3
pm 0.5) MeV/c^{2}. We find no evidence for either decay. We obtain upper limits
of Br(KL->pi0pi0X0->pi0pi0mu+mu-) pi0pi0mu+mu-) <
9.2 x 10^{-11} at the 90% confidence level. This result rules out the
pseudoscalar X0 as an explanation of the HyperCP result under the scenario that
the \bar{d}sX0 coupling is completely real

statistics of the pair and the real nature of the photon, the
decay is restricted to proceed at lowest order
by the CP conserving direct emission (DE) of an E2 electric quadrupole photon.
The rate of this decay is interesting theoretically since chiral perturbation
theory predicts that this process vanishes at level . Therefore, this
mode probes chiral perturbation theory at . In this paper we report a
determination of an upper limit of (90% CL) for
. This is approximately a factor of 20 lower than

Measurement of the rare decay pi0 -> e+ e-
The branching ratio of the rare decay pi0 -> e+ e- has been measured
precisely, using the complete data set from the KTeV E799-II experiment at
Fermilab. We observe 794 candidate pi0 -> e+ e- events using K0_L -> 3pi0 as a
source of tagged pi0's. The expected background is 52.7 +- 11.2 events,
predominantly from high e+ e- mass pi0 -> e+ e- gamma decays. We have measured
B[(pi0 -> e+ e-), (m_e+e-/m_pi0)^2 > 0.95] = 6.44 +- 0.25(stat) +- 0.22(syst)
x10^(-8), which is above the unitary bound from pi0 -> gamma gamma and within
the range of theoretical expectations from the standard model.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Measurement of Direct Emission in the KL->pi+pi-gamma Decay Mode
In this paper the KTeV collaboration reports the analysis of 112.1*10^3
candidate KL->pi+pi-gamma decays including a background of 671+/-41 events with
the objective of determining the photon production mechanisms intrinsic to the
decay process. These decays have been analyzed to extract the relative
contributions of the CP violating bremsstrahlung process and the CP conserving
M1 and CP violating E1 direct photon emission processes. The M1 direct photon
emission amplitude and its associated vector form factor parameterized as
|g_M1|(1+ (a_1/a_2)/(M(rho)^2-M(K)^2+2M(K)*E(gamma)) have been measured to be
|g_M1|=1.198 +/- 0.035(stat) +/- 0.086(syst) and a_1/a_2 = -0.738 +/-
0.007(stat) +/- 0.018 (syst) GeV^2/c^2 respectively. An upper limit for the CP
violating E1 direct emission amplitude |g_E1| < 0.21 (90% CL) has been found.
The overall ratio of direct photon emission (DE) to total photon emission
including the bremsstrahlung process (IB) has been determined to be DE/(DE +IB)

Estimating the horizontal and vertical direction-of-arrival of water-borne seismic signals in the northern Philippine Sea

The definitive version was published in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 134 (2013): 3282, doi:10.1121/1.4818843.Conventional and adaptive plane-wave beamforming with simultaneous recordings by large-aperture horizontal and vertical line arrays during the 2009 Philippine Sea Engineering Test (PhilSea09) reveal the rate of occurrence and the two-dimensional arrival structure of seismic phases that couple into the deep ocean. A ship-deployed, controlled acoustic source was used to evaluate performance of the horizontal array for a range of beamformer adaptiveness levels. Ninety T-phases from unique azimuths were recorded between Yeardays 107 to 119. T-phase azimuth and S-minus-P-phase time-of-arrival range estimates were validated using United States Geological Survey seismic monitoring network data. Analysis of phases from a seismic event that occurred on Yearday 112 near the east coast of Taiwan approximately 450âkm from the arrays revealed a 22° clockwise evolution of T-phase azimuth over 90âs. Two hypotheses to explain such evolutionâbody wave excitation of multiple sources or in-water scatteringâare presented based on T-phase origin sites at the intersection of azimuthal great circle paths and ridge/coastal bathymetry. Propagation timing between the source, scattering region, and array position suggests the mechanism behind the evolution involved scattering of the T-phase from the Ryukyu Ridge and a T-phase formation/scattering location estimation error of approximately 3.2âkm.This research is supported

Cascade and anti-Cascade Polarization Measurements at 800 GeV/c
The polarization of neutral Cascade and anti-Cascade hyperons produced by 800
GeV/c protons on a BeO target at a fixed targeting angle of 4.8 mrad is
measured by the KTeV experiment at Fermilab. Our result of 9.7% for the neutral
Cascade polarization shows no significant energy dependence when compared to a
result obtained at 400 GeV/c production energy and at twice our targeting
angle. The polarization of the neutral anti-Cascade is measured for the first
time and found to be consistent with zero. We also examine the dependence of
polarization on transverse production momentum.Comment: 4 page PR
Improved KL->pi e nu Form Factor and Phase Space Integral with Reduced Model Uncertainty
Using the published KTeV sample of 2 million KL-> pi e nu decays and a new
form factor expansion with a rigorous bound on higher order terms, we present a
new determination of the KL->pi e nu form factor and phase space integral.
Compared to the previous KTeV result, the uncertainty in the new form factor
expansion is negligible and results in an overall uncertainty in the phase
space integral (IKe) that is a factor of two smaller: IKe = 0.15392 +- 0.00048

Determination of the Parity of the Neutral Pion via the Four-Electron Decay
We present a new determination of the parity of the neutral pion via the
double Dalitz decay pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e-. Our sample, which consists of 30511
candidate decays, was collected from K_L -> pi0 pi0 pi0 decays in flight at the
KTeV-E799 experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We confirm the
negative pi^0 parity, and place a limit on scalar contributions to the pi^0 ->
e+ e- e+ e- decay amplitude of less than 3.3% assuming CPT conservation. The
pi^0 gamma* gamma* form factor is well described by a momentum-dependent model
with a slope parameter fit to the final state phase space distribution.
Additionally, we have measured the branching ratio of this mode to be B(pi^0 ->
e+ e- e+ e-) = (3.26 +- 0.18) x 10^(-5).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Typographical error in radiative branching ratio
