Development of a mobile APP in PG/CORDOVA for data management, parametrization and execution of bioinformatics web services

A lo largo de este documento se describe el plan de trabajo para el desarrollo de una aplicación basada en web, especialmente diseñada para móviles pero accesible desde cualquier navegador, así como sus características y su funcionalidad. Empezando por las razones que motivan este trabajo, la definición de los objetivos del mismo y el estado del arte, se describen también el marco de desarrollo y las distintas etapas del desarrollo software. El resultado es mORCA, una aplicación basada en web especialmente diseñada para dispositivos móviles capaz de navegar a través de repositorios, descubrir y ejecutar servicios bioinformáticos y consultar resultados de los mismos. Además la aplicación ha sido portada a las principales plataformas móviles (Android e iOS) con el uso de marcos de trabajo como PhoneGap y Cordova, que mediante instalación permiten mejorar la experiencia del usuario final guardando información en el propio dispositivo

Analyzing the differences between reads and contigs when performing a taxonomic assignment comparison in metagenomics

Metagenomics is an inherently complex field in which one of the primary goals is to determine the compositional organisms present in an environmental sample. Thereby, diverse tools have been developed that are based on the similarity search results obtained from comparing a set of sequences against a database. However, to achieve this goal there still are affairs to solve such as dealing with genomic variants and detecting repeated sequences that could belong to different species in a mixture of uneven and unknown representation of organisms in a sample. Hence, the question of whether analyzing a sample with reads provides further understanding of the metagenome than with contigs arises. The assembly yields larger genomic fragments but bears the risk of producing chimeric contigs. On the other hand, reads are shorter and therefore their statistical significance is harder to asses, but there is a larger number of them. Consequently, we have developed a workflow to assess and compare the quality of each of these alternatives. Synthetic read datasets beloging to previously identified organisms are generated in order to validate the results. Afterwards, we assemble these into a set of contigs and perform a taxonomic analysis on both datasets. The tools we have developed demonstrate that analyzing with reads provide a more trustworthy representation of the species in a sample than contigs especially in cases that present a high genomic variability.Universidad de Málaga. Workflows and service discovery: a mobile device approach

Bioinformatics has moved from command-line standalone programs to web-service based environments. Such trend has resulted in an enormous amount of online resources which can be hard to find and identify, let alone execute and exploit. Furthermore, these resources are aimed -in general- to solve specific tasks. Usually, this tasks need to be combined in order to achieve the desired results. In this line, finding the appropriate set of tools to build up a workflow to solve a problem with the services available in a repository is itself a complex exercise. Issues such as services discovering, composition and representation appear. On the technological side, mobile devices have experienced an incredible growth in the number of users and technical capabilities. Starting from this reality, in the present paper, we propose a solution for service discovering and workflow generation while distinct approaches of representing workflows in a mobile environment are reviewed and discussed. As a proof of concept, a specific use case has been developed: we have embedded an expanded version of our Magallanes search engine into mORCA, our mobile client for bioinformatics. Towards the intelligent diagnosis of hematological diseases

In traditional medicine, patient diagnosis usually implies an in depth study of its state and symptoms that a specialist has to carry out. The adaptation and customization of the medical treatment to those individual characteristics of each patient is what we know as Precision Medicine. Furthermore, in the case of multidisciplinary fields such as haematology, the identification of several diseases usually implies complex analyses in order to have a high degree of certainty in the diagnosis. A better understanding of the clinical tests and their relationship and the finding of new patterns between them will enable us to avoid a significant amount of such tests by supporting the specialist with new information. In this line, Artificial Intelligence has proven to be a useful methodology for data analytics in general whose main drawback is the need of huge amounts of data to achieve high accuracy. In the particular case of clinical data, it is widely generated in hospitals but the lack of standardization and the difficulties of availability require complex preprocessing. Therefore, we have collected 100,000 complete blood counts and developed a method to 1) automatically label textual diagnosis using deep neural networks with Long short-term memory cells. In this approach, a group of specialists has manually labelled 1,000 CBCs through a mobile application, which have then been used to feed the network in order to learn to interpret the diagnosis, and 2) to make an intelligent diagnosis of new samples in which a subset of 10,000 CBCs has been used as an input to a Support Vector Machine. In summary, in this work we present two different prototypes of architectures in order to define methods for the collection, preprocessing and intelligent classification of clinical data, focusing in haematological disease. Efficacy of phytotherapy in hypertensive older adults belonging to the "Raul Sanchez" University Polyclinic

The accelerated demographic and epidemiological transition experienced by Latin American countries has given rise to a progressive aging of the population that has become an indicator, both in developed and developing countries, of improvement in world health. Almost all older adults, as a consequence of their aging, suffer from at least one chronic disease, being very frequent in this population risk group arterial hypertension, so it is necessary to know the alternatives offered by Natural and Traditional Medicine, especially phytotherapy, in the treatment of this disease. The objective of the research is to evaluate the effectiveness of phytotherapy in the treatment of hypertensive older adults of the family doctor's office # 89 belonging to the Raúl Sánchez polyclinic, in Pinar del Río. For this purpose, an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 133 hypertensive older adults treated with phytopharmaceuticals. As a result, the research determined the most effective phytopharmacological treatment for hypertension in this population segment

Famílies botàniques de plantes medicinals

Els treballs han estat realitzat per la totalitat dels estudiants dels grups M-2 i M-3 de l’assignatura Botànica Farmacèutica durant els mesos d’abril i maig del curs 2013-14. Tots els treballs s’han dut a terme a través de la plataforma de GoogleDocs i han estat tutoritzats pel professor de l’assignatura i revisats i finalment co-avaluats entre els propis estudiants. L’objectiu principal de l’activitat ha estat fomentar l’aprenentatge autònom i col·laboratiu en Botànica farmacèutica

Dicha postura, de conciencia crítica y sensibilización social, sumada a la experiencia adquirida mediante el trabajo articulado con otras instituciones de índole académico y de forma directa con las comunidades, permitió establecer como objetivo central del evento la reflexión de los diferentes grupos de interés, la gestión de sus impactos como elementos puntuales que contribuyeron en la audiencia a la toma de conciencia frente al papel que se debe asumir a favor de la responsabilidad social como aporte seguro al desarrollo regional y a su vez al fortalecimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible

mORCA: sailing bioinformatics world with mobile devices.

Nearly 10 years have passed since the first mobile apps appeared. Given the fact that bioinformatics is a web-based world and that mobile devices are endowed with web-browsers, it seemed natural that bioinformatics would transit from personal computers to mobile devices but nothing could be further from the truth. The transition demands new paradigms, designs and novel implementations. Throughout an in-depth analysis of requirements of existing bioinformatics applications we designed and deployed an easy-to-use web-based lightweight mobile client. Such client is able to browse, select, compose automatically interface parameters, invoke services and monitor the execution of Web Services using the service's metadata stored in catalogs or repositories. mORCA is available at http://bitlab-es.com/morca/app as a web-app. It is also available in the App store by Apple and Play Store by Google. Tratamiento sustitutivo de la insuficiencia renal crónica : diálisis y trasplante renal : proceso asistencial integrado 2ª ed

Se han revisado los indicadores de calidad en función de su interés clínico y la capacidad para ser objetivados y a medida que los grupos profesionales las identifiquen se establecerán aquellas competencias que deben estar presentes para la implantación del proceso. Los conceptos vertidos en este documento son fruto de la experiencia y están fundamentados en la evidencia científica actual disponible, definiéndose las distintas características de calidad de acuerdo con dicha evidencia y, por consenso cuando ésta no exista
