    Wetting phenomenon in the liquid-vapor phase coexistence of a partially miscible Lennard-Jones binary mixture

    We have carried out extensive equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the structure and the interfacial properties in the liquid-vapor (LV) phase coexistence of partially miscible binary Lennard-Jones (LJ) mixtures. By analyzing the structural properties as a function of the miscibility parameter, α \alpha , we found that at relatively low temperatures the system separates forming a liquid A-liquid B interface in coexistence with the vapor phase. At higher temperatures and, 0<α0.5 0<\alpha\leq 0.5 , we found a temperature range, Tw(α)T<Tcons(α)T^{*}_{w}(\alpha) \leq T^{*} < T^{*}_{cons}(\alpha), where the liquid phases are wet by the vapor phase. Here, Tw(α) T^{*}_{w}(\alpha) represents the wetting transition temperature (WTT) and Tcons(α)T^{*}_{cons}(\alpha) is the consolute temperature of the mixture. However, for 0.5<α<1 0.5< \alpha < 1, no wetting phenomenon occurs. For the particular value, α=0.25 \alpha=0.25 , we analyzed quantitatively the TT^{*} versus ρ\rho^{*}, and P P^{*} versus T T^{*} phase diagrams and found, Tc1.25 T^{*}_{c}\simeq 1.25 , and Tcons1.25T^{*}_{cons}\simeq1.25. We also studied quantitatively, as a function of temperature, the surface tension and the adsorption of molecules at the liquid-liquid interface. It was found that the adsorption shows a jump from a finite negative value up to minus infinity, when the vapor wets the liquid phases, suggesting that the wetting transition (WT) is of first order. The calculated phase diagram together with the wetting phenomenon strongly suggest the existence of a tricritical point. These results agree well with some experiments carried out in fluid binary mixtures.Comment: Enlarged version that include results of more extensive simulations.     Clasificación geomorfométrica a partir de datos lidiar en un área minera degradada

    Las características del cualquier entorno varían considerablemente en función de la topografía, siendo un factor indispensable a tener en cuenta en cualquier estudio, y más concretamente en la Sierra Minera de Cartagena – La Unión; zona de clima semiárido en la que históricamente ha tenido lugar una gran actividad de minería extractiva que ha modificado todos sus componentes morfológicos (relieve, pendiente, etc.), resultando por tanto de especial interés la clasificación de los elementos geomorfológicos allí presentes. En este estudio se ha utilizado un Modelo Digital de Elevaciones (MDE) de 4 metros de resolución espacial obtenido a partir de un vuelo LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) con el objetivo de hacer una clasificación geomorfométrica. Para ello, se realiza una primera aproximación a la realidad de la zona de estudio mediante una clasificación no supervisada, utilizando como técnica cluster el algoritmo ISODATA (Iterative Self- Organizing Data Analysis Technique), e introduciendo los atributos topográficos derivados directamente del MDE para caracterizar las clases. Asimismo, se realiza una clasificación supervisada basada en áreas de entrenamiento de los principales elementos geomorfológicos.The characteristics of any environment vary widely in relation with the topography, being an indispensable factor to take into account in any study, and more specifically in the mining range of Cartagena - La Unión. It is a semiarid area in which, historically, large mining activity has changed all its morphological components (relief, slope, etc..), being of special interest the classification of its geomorphological elements. The data used in the classifications were derived from a four-meter grid LIDAR- DEM. Firstly, we perform an approximation to the reality of the study area by unsupervised classification, using the ISODATA (Iterative Self- Organizing Data Analysis Technique) algorithm cluster technique, introducing the topographic attributes derived directly from the DEM to characterize classes.     Diffusion dynamics on multiplex networks

    We study the time scales associated to diffusion processes that take place on multiplex networks, i.e. on a set of networks linked through interconnected layers. To this end, we propose the construction of a supra-Laplacian matrix, which consists of a dimensional lifting of the Laplacian matrix of each layer of the multiplex network. We use perturbative analysis to reveal analytically the structure of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the complete network in terms of the spectral properties of the individual layers. The spectrum of the supra-Laplacian allows us to understand the physics of diffusion-like processes on top of multiplex networks.Comment: 6 Pages including supplemental material.     Structural basis for inhibition of the histone chaperone activity of SET/TAF-Iß by cytochrome c

    Chromatin is pivotal for regulation of the DNA damage process insofar as it influences access to DNA and serves as a DNA repair docking site. Recent works identify histone chaperones as key re- gulators of damaged chromatin’s transcriptional activity. However, understanding how chaperones are modulated during DNA damage response is still challenging. This study reveals that the histone chap- erone SET/TAF-Iß interacts with cytochrome c following DNA damage. Specifically, cytochrome c is shown to be translocated into cell nuclei upon induction of DNA damage, but not upon stimulation of the death receptor or stress-induced pathways. Cytochrome c was found to competitively hinder binding of SET/TAF-Iß to core histones, thereby locking its histone-binding domains and inhibiting its nucle- osome assembly activity. In addition, we have used NMR spectros- copy, calorimetry, mutagenesis, and molecular docking to provide an insight into the structural features of the formation of the complex between cytochrome c and SET/TAF-Iß. Overall, these findings estab- lish a framework for understanding the molecular basis of cyto- chrome c-mediated blocking of SET/TAF-Iß, which subsequently may facilitate the development of new drugs to silence the oncogenic effect of SET/TAF-Iß’s histone chaperone activity

    Oxidative stress is tightly regulated by cytochrome c phosphorylation and respirasome factors in mitochondria

    Respiratory cytochrome c has been found to be phosphorylated at tyrosine 97 in the postischemic brain upon neuroprotective insulin treatment, but how such posttranslational modification affects mitochondrial metabolism is unclear. Here, we report the structural features and functional behavior of a phosphomimetic cytochrome c mutant, which was generated by site-specific incorporation at position 97 of p-carboxymethyl-l-phenylalanine using the evolved tRNA synthetase method. We found that the point mutation does not alter the overall folding and heme environment of cytochrome c, but significantly affects the entire oxidative phosphorylation process. In fact, the electron donation rate of the mutant heme protein to cytochrome c oxidase, or complex IV, within respiratory supercomplexes was higher than that of the wild-type species, in agreement with the observed decrease in reactive oxygen species production. Direct contact of cytochrome c with the respiratory supercomplex factor HIGD1A (hypoxia-inducible domain family member 1A) is reported here, with the mutant heme protein exhibiting a lower affinity than the wild-type species. Interestingly, phosphomimetic cytochrome c also exhibited a lower caspase-3 activation activity. Altogether, these findings yield a better understanding of the molecular basis for mitochondrial metabolism in acute diseases, such as brain ischemia, and thus could allow the use of phosphomimetic cytochrome c as a neuroprotector with therapeutic applications.España, Junta de Andalucía BIO-198España MINECO BFU2015-71017/BM

    Synchronization in Random Geometric Graphs

    In this paper we study the synchronization properties of random geometric graphs. We show that the onset of synchronization takes place roughly at the same value of the order parameter that a random graph with the same size and average connectivity. However, the dependence of the order parameter with the coupling strength indicates that the fully synchronized state is more easily attained in random graphs. We next focus on the complete synchronized state and show that this state is less stable for random geometric graphs than for other kinds of complex networks. Finally, a rewiring mechanism is proposed as a way to improve the stability of the fully synchronized state as well as to lower the value of the coupling strength at which it is achieved. Our work has important implications for the synchronization of wireless networks, and should provide valuable insights for the development and deployment of more efficient and robust distributed synchronization protocols for these systems.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    First adequately-known quadrupedal sirenian from Eurasia (Eocene, Bay of Biscay, Huesca, northeastern Spain)

    Sirenians are the only extant herbivorous mammals fully adapted to an aquatic lifestyle. They originated in Africa during the Paleocene from an undetermined clade of afrotherian mammals, and by the end of the Eocene they were widely distributed across the tropical latitudes. Here we introduce Sobrarbesiren cardieli gen. et sp. nov. It is the first adequately-known quadrupedal sirenian from Eurasia and the oldest record of this clade from western Europe. Fossils have been recovered from the middle Lutetian (SBZ15) site of Castejón de Sobrarbe-41 (Huesca, Spain), and comprise many cranial and postcranial remains, including pelvic girdle and hind limb bones, from at least six sirenian individuals of different ontogenetic stages. Sobrarbesiren shows a suite of characters previously considered synapomorphies of different clades of derived sirenians, such as the presence of the processus retroversus of the squamosal and the pterygoid fossa, combined with ancestral characters such as the presence of an alisphenoid canal, a permanent P5, at least two sacral vertebrae, a primitive pelvis and functional femora and fibulae. Sobrarbesiren is recovered as the sister taxon of Dugongidae and represents a transitional stage of adaptation to aquatic life between the amphibious quadrupedal prorastomids and the aquatic quadrupedal protosirenids

    A Novel Cause-Effect Variable Analysis in Enterprise Architecture by Fuzzy Logic Techniques

    In this paper, or present a new integration approach for managing Information Technology variables within enterprise architecture in an integrated way. Additionially, a novel method based on fuzzy logic for cause-effect variable analysis is proposed as a useful support decision-making tool for companies in order to lmow the main actions they must perform for increasing their benefits. This is employed to assess the Integration Management System in Enterprises, based on Enterprise Architecture and Information Technology. We show as fuzzy logic plays an important role M this area due to these variables can be affected for multifactorial elements iinpregnated with uncertainty. The knowledge given by the experts is translated into dependence rules, Which have also been analyzed from a fuzzy point of view using a combination of two fuzzy techniques, namely, fuzzy relation equation theory and fuzzy graph. Firstly, fuzzy dependence rules are computed froth fuzzy relation equations and, secondly an analysis based on incidence subgraph is performed.
