The relationship between second-to-fourth digit (2D:4D) ratios and problematic and pathological Internet use among Turkish university students
The ratio of the second and fourth fingers (2D:4D ratio) is a sexually dimorphic trait, with men tending to have lower values than women. This ratio has been related to prenatal testosterone concentrations and addictive behaviors including problematic video-gaming. We aimed to investigate the possible association between 2D:4D ratios and Internet addiction and whether such a relationship would be independent of impulsivity. Methods A total of 652 university students (369 women, 283 men), aged 17–27 years, were enrolled in the study. Problematic and pathological Internet use (PPIU) was assessed using the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The participants also completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (version 11; BIS-11) and had their 2D:4D ratios measured. Results 2D:4D ratios were not significantly different in women with PPIU and in those with adaptive Internet use (AIU). Men with PPIU exhibited lower 2D:4D ratios on both hands when compared with those with AIU. Correlation analysis revealed that 2D:4D ratios on both hands were negatively correlated with IAT scores among men, but not among women. The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that age, duration of weekly Internet use, impulsiveness, and 2D:4D ratios on the right hand were independently associated with IAT scores among men, and impulsivity did not mediate the relationship between 2D:4D ratios and PPIU. Conclusions For men, 2D:4D ratios on the right hand were inversely correlated with Internet addiction severity even after controlling for individual differences in impulsivity. These findings suggest that high prenatal testosterone levels may contribute to the occurrence of PPIU among men
Yüksek pozitif ekspiryum sonu basıncı nedeniyle oluşan pnömomediyastinum olgusu
A 26-year-old female patient, who presented to the emergency department with
chronic renal failure, general condition disturbance and dyspnea, was intubated
due to low oxygen saturation. The results of the blood biochemical test were
normal except for low saturation. Our case did not have any coronary artery
disease or obstructive pulmonary disease. While she was undergoing the positive
end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) treatment in the intensive care unit, the patient
was detected to have right heart failure on her echocardiogram examination and
pneumomediastinum was found on her direct radiography examination and on
chest x-ray and computed tomography (CT) on the 2nd day of her hospitalization.
The development of pneumomediastinum associated with PEEP for low saturation
appears to be a rare phenomenon. In accompany with the findings of the case, the
examination data and the literature information were prepared as a case report.

Widespread deployment of new generation high-speed networks, developments in large capacity DWDM technologies, and continuous demand for increasingly resilient global Internet services necessitates a revision on optical transport networks. Considered to be one of the most promising recent phenomena in that sense, OTN is evolving to become a major core switching platform. In this thesis, we briefly present the progress in optical transport networking from hardware architecture and software hierarchy points of views. Then, trends in protection switching are pointed out through a peculiar taxonomy on computational, topological, and efficiency aspects. Finally, an autonomous, low complexity and inter-disciplinary (incorporating automatic protection switching of optical networks with distance vector routing of mobile ad-hoc networks) lightpath recovery algorithm is offered based on time-zone awareness of OTN nodes to fulfill the basic requirements expected from mesh optical networks. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with simulation in comparison to two well-known algorithms.M.S. - Master of Scienc
Shamanistic Rituals to Âşıks Performances: Symbolism of Summoning Spirits
Âşıks, renowned for their adeptness at improvisational poetry, are viewed as the inheritors of certain shamanic functions within historical contexts. Originally, shamans assumed diverse roles encompassing poetry, medicine, and priesthood before social and religious transformations prompted a gradual shift of the poetic responsibilities, first to individuals termed ozan (bards) and later to âşık, beginning from the 15th to 16th centuries. Âşıks share parallels with shamans in their upbringing, developmental stages toward âşıklık (bardhood), and esteemed societal positions. Their reverence for deceased masters becomes evident in their artistic presentations, wherein they express homage to the memories, and consequently the spirits, of their masters by reciting the works of esteemed âşık masters, notably Köroğlu, during their performances. This practice, referred to as “usta malı söylemek” (the performance of the masters’ poems and folk songs) within the Turkish âşık tradition, represents an endeavor to establish a connection with the spirits of ancestors. The resemblance between the tradition of âşıks evolving within the master–apprentice dynamic and shamans invoking the spirits of departed ancestors, embarking on celestial and subterranean journeys empowered by them, and the âşıks’ homage to their masters’ spirits through recitations of their works, thereby sensing their masters’ influence by engaging with them, is striking. This study explores the extent to which contemporary âşıks consciously embrace this resemblance. To this end, a sample group of 34 âşıks residing in diverse regions of Türkiye was interviewed, and the acquired data were analyzed using the document analysis method. Accordingly, all the âşıks who participated in the study were nurtured within the tradition of the master–apprentice relationship akin to shamans. They diligently sought to evoke the spirits of their masters during their performances by reciting masters’ poems and songs, reminiscent of shamans invoking the spirits of deceased shaman ancestors through prayers resembling divine verses. Furthermore, while variations specific to different regions and age groups existed among these âşıks, it was observed that consciously reciting the poems of their masters elevated the masters’ spirits. Simultaneously, they harbored concerns about the potential harm that neglecting this practice might inflict upon the tradition, themselves, and their surroundings
