Lasers incorporating two-dimensional photonic crystal mirrors
Photonic bandgap crystals are expected to be
of use in defining microcavities for modifying
spontaneous emission and as highly reflective
mirrors. There are several reports of microfabricating
one-dimensional structure. Here, we describe the incorporation of a microfabricated two-dimensional photonic lattice in an edge-emitting semiconductor laser structure.
We demonstrate laser operation in a cavity formed between a cleaved facet and a microfabricated periodic lattice
Precise determination of muon and electromagnetic shower contents from shower universality property
We consider two new aspects of Extensive Air Shower development universality
allowing to make accurate estimation of muon and electromagnetic (EM) shower
contents in two independent ways. In the first case, to get muon (or EM) signal
in water Cherenkov tanks or in scintillator detectors it is enough to know the
vertical depth of shower maximum and the total signal in the ground detector.
In the second case, the EM signal can be calculated from the primary particle
energy and the zenith angle. In both cases the parametrizations of muon and EM
signals are almost independent on primary particle nature, energy and zenith
angle. Implications of the considered properties for mass composition and
hadronic interaction studies are briefly discussed. The present study is
performed on 28000 of proton, oxygen and iron showers, generated with CORSIKA
6.735 for spectrum in the energy range log(E/eV)=18.5-20.0 and
uniformly distributed in cos^2(theta) in zenith angle interval theta=0-65
degrees for QGSJET II/Fluka interaction models.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
A new multiparametric topological method for determining the primary cosmic ray mass composition in the knee energy region
The determination of the primary cosmic ray mass composition from the
characteristics of extensive air showers (EAS), obtained at an observation
level in the lower half of the atmosphere, is still an open problem. In this
work we propose a new method of the Multiparametric Topological Analysis and
show its applicability for the determination of the mass composition of the
primary cosmic rays at the PeV energy region.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, talk given at Vulcano 2004 Workshop 'Frontier

Process parameters effect on mechanical properties and fatigue behaviour of friction stir weld AA6060 joints
Friction stir welding (FSW) is the most remarkable welding technology that has been invented and developed in the last decade. It is a solid-state welding process in which a rotating tool is driven into the material and translated along the interface of two or more plates. This technology has been successfully used to join materials that are considered difficult to be welded by fusion welding methods. FSW has potentially significant applications in many industrial fields such as aerospace, automotive, and naval industry. Anyway, FSW technology requires a meticulous understanding of the process and consequent mechanical properties of the welds in order to be used in the production of high performance components. The present work deals with an experimental campaign aimed at the evaluation of the mechanical properties of AA6060 T6 friction stir welded joints. The butt joints obtained using two different tool geometries (standard and threaded) were performed by varying the welding parameters, namely, tool rotating speed and feed rate. The standard tool was a very simple device fabricated using AISI 1040 steel, with a flat shoulder and a cylindrical pin. The threaded tool was a more complex device based on two main components: a tool holder, with a flat shoulder, and a threaded probe obtained using a commercial thread forming tap. The quality of the joints was evaluated in terms of both tensile strength (UTS) and fatigue behavior. The study of axial pulsing fatigue properties required the fabrication of a specific testing device able to avoid parasite bending moments. In order to estimate the more efficient and effective tool type, the welding forces (axial and longitudinal) were also measured
Assessing influence factors on daily ammonia and greenhouse gas concentrations from an open-sided cubicle barn in hot mediterranean climate
Measurement of gas concentrations constitutes basic knowledge for the computation of emissions from livestock buildings. Although it is well known that hot climate conditions increase gas emissions, in the literature the relation between gas concentrations from open barns and animalrelated parameters has not been investigated yet. This study aimed at filling this gap by evaluating daily gas concentrations within an open-sided barn in hot Mediterranean climate. The influence of microclimatic parameters (MC) and cow behavior and barn management (CBBM) were evaluated for ammonia (NH3 ), methane (CH4 ), and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) concentrations. Results showed that both MC and CBBM affected concentrations of NH3 (p < 0.02), CH4 (p < 0.001), and CO2 (p < 0.001). Higher values of NH3 concentration were detected during the cleaning of the floor by a tractor with scraper, whereas the lowest NH3 concentrations were recorded during animal lying behavior. Measured values of CO2 and CH4 were highly correlated (C = 0.87–0.89) due to the same sources of production (i.e., digestion and respiration). The different management of the cooling systems during the two observation periods reduced significantly CH4 concentrations in the barn when the cooling system in the feeding area was switched off. Based on methodological choices due to the specific barn typology, parameters related to animals can provide information on the variation of gas concentrations in the barn environment in hot climate conditions
Environmental productivity index GIS-based model to estimate prickly pear biomass potential availability for biogas production
Nowadays, climate change is the environmental issue facing the world. To reach the 2030 European Union goals, recently, biogas production through anaerobic digestion has developed significantly, by using alternative biomass sources due to the competition between food and no-food products. In this regard, Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) has been suggested as a suitable new biomass for producing biomethane within the context of circular economy. In this study, a predictive methodology was applied by combining the Nobel model of environmental productivity index (EPI) and geographic information system (GIS), with the aim of estimating OFI biomass amount, as well as biogas and electricity potential production. The GIS analyses allowed the identification of the most suitable territorial areas for producing biogas from OFI, and an estimation of electricity production. The achieved results are highly valuable information for strategic planning of biogas sector development and could be relevant to the intervention priorities established by the EU
Chromosomal bar codes produced by multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization with multiple YAC clones and whole chromosome painting probes
Colored chromosome staining patterns, termed chromosomal ‘bar codes’ (CBCs), were obtained on human chromosomes by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with pools of Alu-PCR products from YAC dones containing human DNA inserts ranging from 100 kbp to 1 Mbp. In contrast to conventional G- or R-bands, the chromosomal position, extent, Individual color and relative signal intensity of each ‘bar’ could be modified depending on probe selection and labeling procedures. Alu-PCR amplification products were generated from 31 YAC clones which mapped to 37 different chromosome bands. For multiple color FISH, Alu-PCR amplification products from various clones were either biotinylated or labeled with digoxigenin. Probes from up to twenty YAC clones were used simultaneously to produce CBCs on selected human chromosomes. Evaluation using a cooled CCD camera and digital image analysis confirmed the high reproducibility of the bars from one metaphase spread to another. Combinatorial FISH with mixtures of whole chromosome paint probes was applied to paint seven chromosomes simultaneously in different colors along with a set of YAC clones which map to these chromosomes. We discuss the potential to construct analytical chromosomal bar codes adapted to particular needs of cytogenetic investigations and automated image analysis
A new method for the UHECR mass composition studies
The detemination of the primary cosmic ray mass composition from the
longitudinal development of atmospheric cascades is still an open problem. In
this work we propose a new method of the multiparametric topological analysis
and show that if both X - the depth of shower maximum and N -
the number of charged particles in the shower maximum are used, reliable
results can be obtained.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, talk given at CRIS2004 Cosmic Ray International
