    Enriching Summer Work: An Evaluation of the Summer Career Exploration Program

    To determine the impact of the Summer Career Exploration Program (SCEP), a privately funded summer jobs program for low-income teens, P/PV examined the lives of over 1700 applicants. These youth were randomly assigned to participate or to not participate in SCEP in the summer of 1999, and their outcomes were compared at four and twelve months after program application. Researchers found that implementation was strong, but program impacts were less impressive. While SCEPs participants got summer jobs at a substantially higher rate (92%) than the control group (62%), the programs ability to translate this large and immediate summer employment impact into intermediate gains (in terms of future plans, college enrollment, work success, sense of self-efficacy or reduced criminal activity) proved to be negligible. Although impacts were short lived, the report concludes that SCEP and similar programs have an important place in the larger mosaic of supports, programs and opportunities for young people

The objective of this paper is to describe a marketable permit scheme that can effectively manage nitrate pollution of groundwater supplies for communities in rural areas without hindering agricultural production in watersheds.     Knowledge and Awareness Among Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3

    Knowledge is a prerequisite for changing behavior, and is useful for improving outcomes and reducing mortality rates in patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The purpose of this article is to describe baseline CKD knowledge and awareness obtained as part of a larger study testing the feasibility of a self-management intervention. Thirty patients were recruited who had CKD Stage 3 with coexisting diabetes and hypertension. Fifty-four percent of the sample were unaware of their CKD diagnosis. Participants had a moderate amount of CKD knowledge. This study suggests the need to increase knowledge in patients with CKD Stage 3 to aid in slowing disease progression

    Time-resolved Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the M-dwarf GJ 876 Exoplanetary System

    Extrasolar planets orbiting M-stars may represent our best chance to discover habitable worlds in the coming decade. The ultraviolet spectrum incident upon both Earth-like and Jovian planets is critically important for proper modeling of their atmospheric heating and chemistry. In order to provide more realistic inputs for atmospheric models of planets orbiting low-mass stars, we present new near- and far-ultraviolet (NUV and FUV) spectroscopy of the M-dwarf exoplanet host GJ 876 (M4V). Using the COS and STIS spectrographs aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have measured the 1150-3140A spectrum of GJ 876. We have reconstructed the stellar HI LyA emission line profile, and find that the integrated LyA flux is roughly equal to the rest of the integrated flux (1150-1210A + 1220-3140A) in the entire ultraviolet bandpass (F(LyA)/F(FUV+NUV) ~0.7). This ratio is ~ 2500x greater than the solar value. We describe the ultraviolet line spectrum and report surprisingly strong fluorescent emission from hot H2 (T(H2) > 2000 K). We show the light-curve of a chromospheric + transition region flare observed in several far-UV emission lines, with flare/quiescent flux ratios >= 10. The strong FUV radiation field of an M-star (and specifically LyA) is important for determining the abundance of O2 -- and the formation of biomarkers -- in the lower atmospheres of Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of low-mass stars.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures.     In modern laminar flow flight and wind tunnel research, it is important to understand the specific cause(s) of laminar to turbulent boundary layer transition. Such information is crucial to the exploration of the limits of practical application of laminar flow for drag reduction on aircraft. The process of transition involves both the possible modes of disturbance growth, and the environmental conditioning of the instabilities by freestream or surface conditions. The possible modes of disturbance growth include viscous, inviscid, and modes which may bypass these natural ones. Theory provides information on the possible modes of disturbance amplification, but experimentation must be relied upon to determine which of those modes actually dominates the transition process in a given environment. The results to date of research on advanced devices and methods used for the study of transition phenomena in the subsonic and transonic flight and wind tunnel environments are presented

    Microbes, Microbiota, and Colon Cancer

    Colorectal cancer (CRC) presents a considerable disease burden worldwide. The human colon is also an anatomical location with the largest number of microbes. It is natural, therefore, to anticipate a role for microbes, particularly bacteria, in colorectal carcinogenesis. The increasing accessibility of microbial meta’omics is fueling a surge in our understanding of the role that microbes and the microbiota play in CRC. In this review, we will discuss recent insights into contributions of the microbiota to CRC and explore conceptual frameworks for evaluating the role of microbes in cancer causation. We also highlight new findings on candidate CRC-potentiating species and current knowledge gaps. Finally, we explore the roles of microbial metabolism as it relates to bile acids, xenobiotics, and diet in the etiology and therapeutics of CRC

    Alternative N Fertilizer Management Strategies Effects on Subsurface Drain Effluent and N Uptake

    Demonstrating positive environmental benefits of alternative N fertilizer management strategies, without adversely affecting crop growth or yield, was a major goal for the Midwest Management Systems Evaluation Areas (MSEA) program. Our project objectives within this program were to quantify the effects of split- and single-N fertilization strategies on NO3-N concentration and loss in subsurface drain effluent and N accumulation and yield of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. The study was conducted on glacial till derived soils in northeast Iowa from 1993 through 1995 using no-till and chisel plow tillage treatments. One-third of the 2,611 effluent samples had NO3-N concentrations greater than 10 mg L–1. Split applying fertilizer N based on pre-sidedress soil nitrate test (PSNT) results significantly increased corn yield for both tillage treatments in the extremely wet 1993 without increasing NO3-N loss in drain effluent. Increased grain yield also resulted in significantly more N removal. When fertilizer N was applied based on the PSNT, no-till and chisel treatments had similar NO3-N losses and concentrations. Average flow-weighted NO3-N concentrations in drain effluent were not increased when larger amounts of fertilizer were applied based on PSNT. However, prior crop and tillage practices and differences in drain flow volume caused significant differences in NO3-N losses and concentrations. These results suggest that spatial differences in flow volume are a major factor determining NO3-N loss in drainage effluent. Significant differences suggest that combining no-tillage practices with split N fertilizer management strategies can have positive environmental benefits without reducing corn yield

    Rapid Population Decline of the Pillar Coral Dendrogyra cylindrus Along the Florida Reef Tract

    Coral reefs worldwide are in a state of decline, but the population status and impacts of stressors for rare species are generally not well documented using broad-scale monitoring protocols. We fate-tracked all known colonies of the pillar coral, Dendrogyra cylindrus, on the Florida Reef Tract (FRT) from 2013 to 2020 to assess population condition and trend, and to document the relative impacts of chronic and acute stressors. Large average colony size, an absence of juveniles, and large geographic distances between genotypes suggest that the Florida D. cylindrus population has been reproductively extinct for decades. During the study period, low-intensity chronic stressors were balanced by regrowth, while back-to-back years of coral bleaching and thermally-exacerbated disease led to declines that the subsequent recovery rates suggest would require 11 uninterrupted years to overcome. The most recent stressor on Florida’s D. cylindrus population is “stony coral tissue loss disease” (SCTLD). Following the appearance of the disease in Florida in 2014, unrecoverable losses occurred within the D. cylindrus population as tissue, colonies, and whole genotypes suffered complete mortality. Losses of 94% of coral tissue, 93% of colonies, and 86% of genotypes between 2014 and the end of 2020 have led to functional extinction of D. cylindrus on the FRT

    Impacting Occupational Therapy Assistant Student Knowledge about Occupation and Occupation-Based Practice

    It is important for occupational therapy assistant (OTA) programs to teach about occupation and occupation-based practice (OBP). Few have published on this topic in relation to OTA education. This study focuses on determining if an educational module covering occupation and OBP would increase student knowledge of occupation and occupation-based practice. In this mixed-methods parallel convergent study, OTA students were immersed in an author-designed educational module to increase their knowledge of occupation, OBP, and the selection of occupation-based interventions. The students engaged in pretesting activities, prior to the module, consisting of short-answer essay and intervention selection tasks. At the conclusion of the module, the students completed posttest activities. The study results demonstrated significant learning in the areas of occupation, OBP, and the selection of occupation-based interventions. Quantitative analysis indicated a statistically significant increase in student learning, and qualitative analysis revealed increased levels of performance, when classified according to Bloom’s Taxonomy. This study addresses a gap in the OTA education literature by showing evidence that use of the learning module increased OTA student knowledge of occupation, OBP, and the ability to select occupation-based interventions. This module was an efficient and effective method of meeting accreditation standards related to OTA education
