A karyological analysis of some taxa of Genista sect. Spartioides, distributed in the eastern part of the Mediterranean region, was carried out. The three subspecies of Genista pulchella: ssp. pulchella (western Balkan Peninsula), ssp. aquilana (central Apennines) and ssp. villarsiana (southern France) all present the chromosome number 2n = 18 + (0 - 4B). The taxa of G. albida aggr., G. albida (eastern Mediterranean) and G. involucrata (Ana- tolian), both have 2n = 18 + (0 - 2B); 2n = 36 + (0 - 3B) being rarely found in the latter species. As regards the taxa endemic to the Balkan Peninsula, G. halacsyi and G. subcapitata show 2n = 18 + (0 - 2B), G. sakellariadis and G. millii 2n = 36 + 2B. All these numbers may be traced back to the basic number x = 9. G. pulchella has the most symmetric karyotype, while G. albida and G. involucrata result more asymmetric; the four Balkan endemics (G. halacsyi, G. sakellariadis, G. subcapitata and G. millii) present the highest grade of asymmetry. A comparison with karyological data already available for all the taxa of sect. Spartioides was also made

Caryological and morphological investigations on a new zinc violet (Cave del predil, Western Julian Alps, NE-Italy)

Caryological and morphological analyses were conducted on Viola tricolor subsp. subalpina and on a zinc violet from the Western Julian Alps, described as Viola tricolor subsp. subalpina var. raiblensis var. nova. Both taxa, which have different ecology and distribution, have 2n = 26 chromosomes. Caryotypic evolution in the zinc violet mainly involves changes in absolute chromosome size and in centromeric and relative size simmetry in respect with var. subalpina, from which it appears to have evolved

KARYOLOGY OF SOME CRITICAL TAXA ON CALAMINE SOILS (CAVE DEL PREDIL, JULIAN ALPS, ITALY). The results of chromosome counts and analyses of karyotype asimmetry on polymorphic taxa growing on calcareous and metalliferous soils and on tailings of a zinc and lead mine are reported. The investigated taxa are: Biscutella laevigata L. subsp. laevigata (2n=36); Dianthus sylvestris Wulf. (211=30); Erysimum sylvestre (Cr.) Scop. (2n=l4); Minuartia venia (L.) Hiern. (211=24); Viola tricolor L. subsp. subalpina Gaudin (211=26) and its var. raiblensis Lausi et Cusma (2n=26) of the same subspecies; Alyssum wulfenianum Bernh. (2n=16); Thlaspi cepaeifolium (Wulf.) Koch subsp. cepaeifolium (2n=14). New chromosome numbers are reported for Alyssum wulfenianum and for Thlaspi cepaeifolium in its locus classicus

KARYOLOGICAL STUDIES IN STACHYS RECTA L., S. LABIOSA BERTOL., S. SUBRCRENATA VIS., S. FRAGILIS VIS. Somatic chromosomes of some closely related taxa belonging to the Stachys recta - complex were investigated. Specimens were collected in populations growing in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region (NE-Italy). The chromosome number 2n = 34 of both S. labiosa Bertol. and S. recta L. is confirmed. The chromosomes numbers of S. subcrenata Vis.: 2n = 34 and S. fragilis Vis.: 2n = 34 are new. Discussions and remarks on the differences between the karioytypes of these taxa are given

Karyological studies of Spartocytisus Webb & Berth. (Genisteae - Fabaceae)

A karyological analysis of the two species of Sparrocyrisus (S. filipes and S. supranubius) was carried out. Both species have the same chromosome nunber 2n=4S. S. nubigenus shows a number of accessory chromosomes varying from O to 4, with a maximum frequency of 2. In addition a comparison was made with the karyological data already available for the taxa of the Cytisus-group and for other intermediate genera of the Genisteae

Karyological systematics of Genista ifniensis a. Caballero, Genista tricuspidata desf., and related species (Genisteae-Fabaceae)

A karyological analysis of two species endemic to Northwestern Africa (Genista ifniensis A. Caballero and G. tricuspidata Desf.) showed that both species have the chromosome number 2n = 48. A comparison was also made with karyological data already available for the other taxa of sects. Scorpioides Spach and Voglera (Gaertn., Mey. & Schreb.) Spach

Pollen cards of the taxa of the Genista radiata group [ G. radiata (L.) Scop. var. radiata, G. radiata var. sericopetala Buchegger, G. holopetala (Koch) Bald., G. hassertiana (Bald.) Buchegger] are presented. The acetolyzed pollen was observed by light and scanning electron microscope
