Computing region moments from boundary representations
The class of all possible formulas for computing arbitrary moments of a region from the region's boundary is derived. The selection of a particular formula depends on the choice of an independent parameter. Several choices of this parameter are explored for region boundaries approximated by polygons. The parameter choice that minimizes computation time for boundaries represented by chain code is derived. Algorithms are presented for computing arbitrary moments for a region from a polygonal approximation of its boundary and for computing low order moments from chain encoded boundaries
Exploration of an oculometer-based model of pilot workload
Potential relationships between eye behavior and pilot workload are discussed. A Honeywell Mark IIA oculometer was used to obtain the eye data in a fixed base transport aircraft simulation facility. The data were analyzed to determine those parameters of eye behavior which were related to changes in level of task difficulty of the simulated manual approach and landing on instruments. A number of trends and relationships between eye variables and pilot ratings were found. A preliminary equation was written based on the results of a stepwise linear regression. High variability in time spent on various instruments was related to differences in scanning strategy among pilots. A more detailed analysis of individual runs by individual pilots was performed to investigate the source of this variability more closely. Results indicated a high degree of intra-pilot variability in instrument scanning. No consistent workload related trends were found. Pupil diameter which had demonstrated a strong relationship to task difficulty was extensively re-exmained
Wing flutter calculations with the CAP-TSD unsteady transonic small disturbance program
The application and assessment is described of CAP-TSD (Computational Aeroelasticity Program - Transonic Small Disturbance) code for flutter prediction. The CAP-TSD program was developed for aeroelastic analysis of complete aircraft configurations and was previously applied to the calculation of steady and unsteady pressures. Flutter calculations are presented for two thin, swept-and-tapered wing planforms with well defined modal properties. The calculations are for Mach numbers from low subsonic to low supersonic values, including the transonic range, and are compared with subsonic linear theory and experimental flutter data. The CAP-TSD flutter results are generally in good agreement with the experimental values and are in good agreement with subsonic linear theory when wing thickness is neglected
Preregistration house officers in general practice: review of evidence
OBJECTIVES: To examine the strengths and weaknesses
of the national and local schemes for preregistration
house officers to spend four months in general
practice, to identify any added value from such
placements, and to examine the impact on career
choices.
DESIGN: Review of all studies that reported on
placements of preregistration house officers in
general practice.
SETTING: 19 accounts of preregistration house officers’
experience in general practice, ranging from single
case reports to a national evaluation study, in a variety
of locations in Scotland and England.
PARTICIPANTS: Views of 180 preregistration house
officers, 45 general practitioner trainers, and 105
consultant trainers.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main findings or themes
weighted according to number of studies reporting
them and weighted for sample size.
RESULTS: The studies were unanimous about the
educational benefits of the placements. The
additional learning included communication skills,
social and psychological factors in illness, patient
centred consultations, broadening of knowledge base,
and dealing with uncertainty about diagnosis and
referral.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the reported benefits and
recommendations of the scheme, it is not expanding.
General practitioner trainers reported additional
supervision that was unremunerated. The reforms of
the senior house officer grade may resolve this
problem by offering the placements to senior house
officers, who require less supervision
Landslides in sensitive soils, Tauranga, New Zealand.
In the Tauranga region sensitive soil failures commonly occur after heavy rainfall events, causing considerable infrastructure damage. Several notable landslides include a large failure at Bramley Drive, Omokoroa in 1979, the Ruahihi Canal collapse in 1981, and numerous landslides in May 2005; recently the Bramley Drive scarp was reactivated in 2011. These failures are associated with materials loosely classified as the Pahoia Tephras - a mixture of rhyolitic pyroclastic deposits of approximately 1 Ma.
The common link with extreme rainfall events suggests a pore water pressure control on the initiation of these failures. Recent research on the structure of the soils shows a dominance of halloysite clay minerals packed loosely in arrangements with high porosity (51 – 77 %), but with almost entirely micropores. This leads us to conclude that the permeability is very low, and the materials remain continuously wet. The formation of halloysite is encouraged by a wet environment with no episodes of drying, supporting this assumption.
A high-resolution CPT trace at Bramley Drive indicates induced pore water pressures rising steadily to a peak at approximately 25 m depth; this depth coincides with the base of the landslide scarp. We infer that elevated pore water pressures develop within this single, thick aquifer, triggering failure through reduced effective stresses. The inactive halloysite clay mineral results in low plasticity indices (13 – 44 %) and hence high liquidity indices (1.2 – 2.4) due to the saturated pore space; remoulding following failure is sudden and dramatic and results in large debris runout distances

Strategic Network Formation with Attack and Immunization
Strategic network formation arises where agents receive benefit from
connections to other agents, but also incur costs for forming links. We
consider a new network formation game that incorporates an adversarial attack,
as well as immunization against attack. An agent's benefit is the expected size
of her connected component post-attack, and agents may also choose to immunize
themselves from attack at some additional cost. Our framework is a stylized
model of settings where reachability rather than centrality is the primary
concern and vertices vulnerable to attacks may reduce risk via costly measures.
In the reachability benefit model without attack or immunization, the set of
equilibria is the empty graph and any tree. The introduction of attack and
immunization changes the game dramatically; new equilibrium topologies emerge,
some more sparse and some more dense than trees. We show that, under a mild
assumption on the adversary, every equilibrium network with agents contains
at most edges for . So despite permitting topologies denser
than trees, the amount of overbuilding is limited. We also show that attack and
immunization don't significantly erode social welfare: every non-trivial
equilibrium with respect to several adversaries has welfare at least as that of
any equilibrium in the attack-free model.
We complement our theory with simulations demonstrating fast convergence of a
new bounded rationality dynamic which generalizes linkstable best response but
is considerably more powerful in our game. The simulations further elucidate
the wide variety of asymmetric equilibria and demonstrate topological
consequences of the dynamics e.g. heavy-tailed degree distributions. Finally,
we report on a behavioral experiment on our game with over 100 participants,
where despite the complexity of the game, the resulting network was
