    Understanding the effects of violent video games on violent crime

    Psychological studies invariably find a positive relationship between violent video game play and aggression. However, these studies cannot account for either aggressive effects of alternative activities video game playing substitutes for or the possible selection of relatively violent people into playing violent video games. That is, they lack external validity. We investigate the relationship between the prevalence of violent video games and violent crimes. Our results are consistent with two opposing effects. First, they support the behavioral effects as in the psychological studies. Second, they suggest a larger voluntary incapacitation effect in which playing either violent or non-violent games decrease crimes.     The Northwest Section of the Wildlife Society and Montana: Past, Present, and Future

    At this 2017 meeting of the Northwest Section and the Montana Chapter of The Wildlife Society, this talk will present the past, present, and potential futures of the Northwest Section as it relates to Montana and to the Parent Society.  Many members today will remember the Section’s dedicated meetings and high level of professional involvement and wonder “where are we now?”    For others, this talk may be their introduction to the Section and how to be involved.  The Northwest Section has shared deep roots with our Montana wildlife heritage, with common leaders and common vision, since the inception of our profession.  Originally composed of Montana, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alberta, the Section had powerful and well-attended annual meetings with themes including foundational concepts in game bird and big game population and habitat management and policy.  Professionals representing an array of agencies, entities, and universities gathered to share the latest scientific findings, mentor students, and address environmental challenges.  A Parent Society reorganization in the early 2000’s lead to formation of a Canadian Chapter and the Section lost connection with British Columbia and Alberta.  Since that time, the Section has been through a period of reformation.  With well-represented member states, an enthusiastic board, and increased dues, the Section’s vision for the future is bright.  Future directions will include focus on building student chapters and bringing student conclaves to the Northwest, supporting policy stances on issues that cross state lines, and increasing communication between our member states

    Low Reproductive Success of Mallards in a Grassland-Dominated Landscape in The Sandhills of Nebraska

    The Sandhills of Nebraska comprise approximately 5,000,000 ha of native grassland interspersed with numerous groundwater-fed wetlands. A substantial population of the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) nests in this region. Previous investigations of nest survival probability of ducks in the Sandhills have estimated surprisingly low rates of nest survival for a grassland-dominated landscape. These investigations were conducted on public lands and most nest searching took place near wetlands where activity of nest predators might be highest. We predicted that mallards would nest at varying distances from wetlands and that survival probability of a representative sample of duck nests would increase with distance from wetlands. We decoy-trapped and radio-marked 71 female mallards, 32 during the 2005 nesting season and 39 during the 2006 nesting season, and monitored their individual choice of nest habitats, their survival during the nesting season, and survival of their nests. Mallards nested in various habitats, both near and far from wetlands. Nest survival probability (Ö = 0.03, SE = 0.02) was low relative to other studies regardless of distance to wetlands. Survival of females during the nesting season (Ö = 0.84, SE = 0.08), however, was high relative to other studies. This pattern could have resulted from the combination of a diverse community of nest predators, few predators of nesting females, and a population of largely second year females that put little effort into nesting

    Inpatient glycemic variability and long-term mortality in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes

    Aims/Hypothesis: To determine the association between inpatient glycemic variability and long-term mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Capillary blood glucose (CBG) of inpatients from 8 hospitals was analysed. 28,353 admissions identified were matched for age, duration of diabetes and admission and median and interquartile range of CBG. 6 year mortality was investigated for (i) those with CBG IQR in the top half of all IQR measurements (matched for all except IQR), vs those in the lower half and (ii) those with the lowest quartile median glucose (matched for all except median). Results: 1. Glycemic variability 3165 matched pairs were analysed. Mortality was greater in those with IQR in upper 50% (≄ 50.9 mg/dl) over follow-up from day 90 post-discharge to a maximum of 6 years (p<0.01, HR 1.17). 2. Median glucose 2.3755 matched pairs were analysed. Mortality was lower in those with a median glucose in upper 50% (≄ 148.5 mg/dl) over follow-up from day 90 post-discharge to a maximum of 6 years (p < 0.01, HR 0.87). Conclusion: Higher inpatient glycemic variability is associated with increased mortality on long-term follow up. When matched by IQR, we have demonstrated higher median CBG is associated with lower long-term mortality. CBG variability may increase cardiovascular morbidity by increasing exposure to hypoglycaemia or to variability per se. In hospitalized patients with diabetes, glycemic variability should be minimised and when greater CBG variability is unavoidable, a less stringent CBG target considered

    Movement Demands of Elite U20 International Rugby Union Players

    The purpose of this study was to quantify movement demands of elite international age grade (U20) rugby union players during competitive tournament match play. Forty elite professional players from an U20 international performance squad were monitored using 10 Hz global positioning systems (GPS) during 15 international tournament matches during the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons. Data on distances, velocities, accelerations, decelerations, high metabolic load (HML) distance and efforts, and number of sprints were derived. Data files from players who played over 60 min (n = 161) were separated firstly into Forwards and Backs, and more specifically into six positional groups; FR--Front Row (prop & hooker), SR--Second Row, BR--Back Row (Flankers & No.8), HB--Half Backs (scrum half & outside half), MF--Midfield (centres), B3--Back Three (wings & full back) for match analysis. Analysis revealed significant differences between forwards and backs positions. Backs scored higher on all variables measured with the exception of number of moderate accelerations, decelerations (no difference). The centres covered the greatest total distance with the front row covering the least (6.51 ± 0.71 vs 4.97 ± 0.75 km, p < 0.001). The front row also covered the least high speed running (HSR) distance compared to the back three (211.6 ± 112.7 vs 728.4 ± 150.2 m, p < 0.001) who covered the most HSR distance, affirming that backs cover greater distances but forwards have greater contact loads. These findings highlight for the first time differences in the movement characteristics of elite age grade rugby union players specific to positional roles

    Personalized Risk Assessment in Never, Light, and Heavy Smokers in a prospective cohort in Taiwan.

    The objective of this study was to develop markedly improved risk prediction models for lung cancer using a prospective cohort of 395,875 participants in Taiwan. Discriminatory accuracy was measured by generation of receiver operator curves and estimation of area under the curve (AUC). In multivariate Cox regression analysis, age, gender, smoking pack-years, family history of lung cancer, personal cancer history, BMI, lung function test, and serum biomarkers such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), bilirubin, alpha fetoprotein (AFP), and c-reactive protein (CRP) were identified and included in an integrative risk prediction model. The AUC in overall population was 0.851 (95% CI = 0.840-0.862), with never smokers 0.806 (95% CI = 0.790-0.819), light smokers 0.847 (95% CI = 0.824-0.871), and heavy smokers 0.732 (95% CI = 0.708-0.752). By integrating risk factors such as family history of lung cancer, CEA and AFP for light smokers, and lung function test (Maximum Mid-Expiratory Flow, MMEF25-75%), AFP and CEA for never smokers, light and never smokers with cancer risks as high as those within heavy smokers could be identified. The risk model for heavy smokers can allow us to stratify heavy smokers into subgroups with distinct risks, which, if applied to low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening, may greatly reduce false positives

    Movement Demands of Elite Under-20s and Senior International Rugby Union Players

    This study compared the movement demands of elite international Under-20 age grade (U20s) and senior international rugby union players during competitive tournament match play. Forty elite professional players from an U20 and 27 elite professional senior players from international performance squads were monitored using 10Hz global positioning systems (GPS) during 15 (U20s) and 8 (senior) international tournament matches during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Data on distances, velocities, accelerations, decelerations, high metabolic load (HML) distance and efforts, and number of sprints were derived. Data files from players who played over 60 min (n = 258) were separated firstly into Forwards and Backs, and more specifically into six positional groups; FR–Front Row (prop & hooker), SR–Second Row, BR–Back Row (Flankers & No.8), HB–Half Backs (scrum half & outside half), MF–Midfield (centres), B3 –Back Three (wings & full back) for match analysis. Linear mixed models revealed significant differences between U20 and senior teams in both the forwards and backs. In the forwards the seniors covered greater HML distance (736.4 ± 280.3 vs 701.3 ± 198.7m, p = 0.01) and severe decelerations (2.38 ± 2.2 vs 2.28 ± 1.65, p = 0.05) compared to the U20s, but performed less relative HSR (3.1 ± 1.6 vs 3.2 ± 1.5, p < 0.01), moderate (19.4 ± 10.5 vs 23.6 ± 10.5, p = 0.01) and high accelerations (2.2 ± 1.9 vs 4.3 ± 2.7, p < 0.01) and sprint‱min-1 (0.11 ± 0.06 vs 0.11 ± 0.05, p < 0.01). Senior backs covered a greater relative distance (73.3 ± 8.1 vs 69.1 ± 7.6 m‱min-1, p < 0.01), greater High Metabolic Load (HML) distance (1138.0 ± 233.5 vs 1060.4 ± 218.1m, p < 0.01), HML efforts (112.7 ± 22.2 vs 98.8 ± 21.7, p < 0.01) and heavy decelerations (9.9 ± 4.3 vs 9.5 ± 4.4, p = 0.04) than the U20s backs. However, the U20s backs performed more relative HSR (7.3 ± 2.1 vs 7.2 ± 2.1, p <0.01) and sprint‱min-1 (0.26 ± 0.07 vs 0.25 ± 0.07, p < 0.01). Further investigation highlighted differences between the 6 positional groups of the teams. The positional groups that differed the most on the variables measured were the FR and MF groups, with the U20s FR having higher outputs on HSR, moderate & high accelerations, moderate, high & severe decelerations, HML distance, HML efforts, and sprints‱min-1. For the MF group the senior players produced greater values for relative distance covered, HSR, moderate decelerations, HML distance and sprint‱min-1. The BR position group was most similar with the only differences seen on heavy accelerations (U20s higher) and moderate decelerations (seniors higher). Findings demonstrate that U20s internationals appear to be an adequate ‘stepping stone’ for preparing players for movement characteristics found senior International rugby, however, the current study highlight for the first time that certain positional groups may require more time to be able to match the movement demands required at a higher playing level than others. Conditioning staff must also bear in mind that the U20s players whilst maintaining or improving match movement capabilities may require to gain substantial mass in some positions to match their senior counterparts
