Benefits will derive from more precise and rapid field management of braininjured patients, with subsequent appropriate stabilization. If brain death is declared, prompt referral for organ donation with optimal management should result in well-functioning organs for transplantation. A defined team approach with well-defined protocols could solve most of the medical and moral dilemmas. Compassionate emotional support should be provided for families, particularly minorities, and should extend to inexperienced staff. Underlying these goals are a strong institutional commitment to staff education and an understanding of the lifesaving role that organ transplantation can play.

Stakeholder participation in decision making processes promises fairness, effectiveness and efficiency and has become the orthodoxy in a wide variety of policy areas, especially in environmental policy making and governance. Central to stakeholder participation is the identification and engagement of those whose contribution is most relevant in any particular case. This paper reports on a study to develop a stakeholder engagement and consultation tool to prepare the Environment Agency Strategic Planning Function for the introduction of the Water Framework Directive. An important outcome of this study was the realisation of the importance of internal stakeholders within the Agency itself, as well as the need to identify and develop external bodies
When Wrong is Right: The Instructional Power of Multiple Conceptions
For many decades, educational communities, including computing education, have debated the value of telling students what they need to know (i.e., direct instruction) compared to guiding them to construct knowledge themselves (i.e., constructivism). Comparisons of these two instructional approaches have inconsistent results. Direct instruction can be more efficient for short-term performance but worse for retention and transfer. Constructivism can produce better retention and transfer, but this outcome is unreliable. To contribute to this debate, we propose a new theory to better explain these research results. Our theory, multiple conceptions theory, states that learners develop better conceptual knowledge when they are guided to compare multiple conceptions of a concept during instruction. To examine the validity of this theory, we used this lens to evaluate the literature for eight instructional techniques that guide learners to compare multiple conceptions, four from direct instruction (i.e., test-enhanced learning, erroneous examples, analogical reasoning, and refutation texts) and four from constructivism (i.e., productive failure, ambitious pedagogy, problem-based learning, and inquiry learning). We specifically searched for variations in the techniques that made them more or less successful, the mechanisms responsible, and how those mechanisms promote conceptual knowledge, which is critical for retention and transfer. To make the paper directly applicable to education, we propose instructional design principles based on the mechanisms that we identified. Moreover, we illustrate the theory by examining instructional techniques commonly used in computing education that compare multiple conceptions. Finally, we propose ways in which this theory can advance our instruction in computing and how computing education researchers can advance this general education theory
Dense circum-nuclear molecular gas in starburst galaxies
We present results from a study of the dense circum-nuclear molecular gas of
starburst galaxies. The study aims to investigate the interplay between
starbursts, active galactic nuclei and molecular gas. We characterise the dense
gas traced by HCN, HCO and HNC and examine its kinematics in the
circum-nuclear regions of nine starburst galaxies observed with the Australia
Telescope Compact Array. We detect HCN (10) and HCO (10) in seven
of the nine galaxies and HNC (10) in four. Approximately 7 arcsec resolution
maps of the circum-nuclear molecular gas are presented. The velocity integrated
intensity ratios, HCO (10)/HCN (10) and HNC (10)/HCN (10),
are calculated. Using these integrated intensity ratios and spatial intensity
ratio maps we identify photon dominated regions (PDRs) in NGC 1097, NGC 1365
and NGC 1808. We find no galaxy which shows the PDR signature in only one part
of the observed nuclear region. We also observe unusually strong HNC emission
in NGC 5236, but it is not strong enough to be consistent with X-ray dominated
region (XDR) chemistry. Rotation curves are derived for five of the galaxies
and dynamical mass estimates of the inner regions of three of the galaxies are

Method and apparatus for measuring frequency and phase difference
A system for deriving direct digital indications of frequency and phase difference between two incoming pulse trains adaptable for collision avoidance systems or the like. A pair of radar beams 152 and 152A are directed toward a target 153 and corresponding beams 154 and 154A returning therefrom are detected. A digital difference circuit 110 forms a pulse train 66 from the Doppler shift frequencies of each beam pair having a repetition rate functionally related to the difference in magnitude of the shift frequencies. Pulses from the pulse train are counted as a function of time. Visual indications thereof on display 144 are correlative to target position relative to beams 152 and 152A

Complete Genome Sequence and Comparative Metabolic Profiling of the Prototypical Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli Strain 042

Escherichia coli can experience a multifaceted life, in some cases acting as a commensal while in other cases causing intestinal and/or extraintestinal disease. Several studies suggest enteroaggregative E. coli are the predominant cause of E. coli-mediated diarrhea in the developed world and are second only to Campylobacter sp. as a cause of bacterial-mediated diarrhea. Furthermore, enteroaggregative E. coli are a predominant cause of persistent diarrhea in the developing world where infection has been associated with malnourishment and growth retardation. \ud

Methods \ud
In this study we determined the complete genomic sequence of E. coli 042, the prototypical member of the enteroaggregative E. coli, which has been shown to cause disease in volunteer studies. We performed genomic and phylogenetic comparisons with other E. coli strains revealing previously uncharacterised virulence factors including a variety of secreted proteins and a capsular polysaccharide biosynthetic locus. In addition, by using Biologβ’ Phenotype Microarrays we have provided a full metabolic profiling of E. coli 042 and the non-pathogenic lab strain E. coli K-12. We have highlighted the genetic basis for many of the metabolic differences between E. coli 042 and E. coli K-12. \ud
