Listening to the People--A Strategic Planning Model for Cooperative Extension

    Get PDF
The first step in the program development process is planning. In order to properly plan, Extension must listen to the people of their communities to hear their needs. In Texas, this is done through a county forum process that identified needs people are facing in their communities. This article outlines the listening steps Texas Cooperative Extension took to host its Texas Community Futures Forum (TCFF) Process. This includes how TCFF was organized and how each county in Texas held a county TCFF to help identify issues facing Texans

We Identified Issues Through Stakeholder Input--Now What?

Listening to needs of clientele to maintain relevance is an essential component of planning. Extension has maintained relevance by listening to clientele. However, how can we systematically review all these issues and develop meaningful strategies to respond with impact? The answer to this question is our ability to maintain our grassroots advantage, but be accountable for regional and statewide impacts. This article provides a strategy to review issues that surface from clientele and develop programmatic action plans to address issues that surface from multiple sources for county, regional, and statewide implementation

Parents\u27 Perceptions of Life Skills Gained by Youth Participating in the 4-H Beef Project

Does participating in the 4-H beef project help develop life skills in youth? Randomly selected parents of youth were mailed a survey asking them to determine if 13 life skills were enhanced as a result of their child participating in the 4-H beef project. The rank order for the top five mean scores were: accepting responsibility, setting goals, develop self-discipline, self motivation, and knowledge of the livestock industry. A Pearson product moment correlation coefficient also revealed a low-to-moderate positive relationship for life skill development and years of participating in the 4-H beef project

    Cosmic-Ray Spectra in Interstellar Space

At energies below ~300 MeV/nuc our knowledge of cosmic-ray spectra outside the heliosphere is obscured by the energy loss that cosmic rays experience during transport through the heliosphere into the inner solar system. This paper compares measurements of secondary electron-capture isotope abundances and cosmic-ray spectra from ACE with a simple model of interstellar propagation and solar modulation in order to place limits on the range of interstellar spectra that are compatible with both sets of data

    Indestructibility of Vopenka's Principle

We show that Vopenka's Principle and Vopenka cardinals are indestructible under reverse Easton forcing iterations of increasingly directed-closed partial orders, without the need for any preparatory forcing. As a consequence, we are able to prove the relative consistency of these large cardinal axioms with a variety of statements known to be independent of ZFC, such as the generalised continuum hypothesis, the existence of a definable well-order of the universe, and the existence of morasses at many cardinals.Comment: 15 pages, submitted to Israel Journal of Mathematic

Credible and Actionable Evidence Across Stakeholder Levels of the Cooperative Extension System

    Get PDF
This article provides a look at the various levels within the Cooperative Extension System and the use of evidence within these levels. The authors examine the factors associated with credible evidence and the various levels. The impact of factors such as politics, science, stakeholder support, and expectations are discussed. The various levels within Extension are summarized in relation to evidence that is routinely requested or required for each. Lastly, the authors use information directly from Extension directors to provide a framework for the discussion
