    The Subfield Codes of Some Few-Weight Linear Codes

    Subfield codes of linear codes over finite fields have recently received a lot of attention, as some of these codes are optimal and have applications in secrete sharing, authentication codes and association schemes. In this paper, the qq-ary subfield codes Cˉf,g(q)\bar{C}_{f,g}^{(q)} of six different families of linear codes Cˉf,g\bar{C}_{f,g} are presented, respectively. The parameters and weight distribution of the subfield codes and their punctured codes Cˉf,g(q)\bar{C}_{f,g}^{(q)} are explicitly determined. The parameters of the duals of these codes are also studied. Some of the resultant qq-ary codes Cˉf,g(q),\bar{C}_{f,g}^{(q)}, Cˉf,g(q)\bar{C}_{f,g}^{(q)} and their dual codes are optimal and some have the best known parameters. The parameters and weight enumerators of the first two families of linear codes Cˉf,g\bar{C}_{f,g} are also settled, among which the first family is an optimal two-weight linear code meeting the Griesmer bound, and the dual codes of these two families are almost MDS codes. As a byproduct of this paper, a family of [24m−2,2m+1,24m−3][2^{4m-2},2m+1,2^{4m-3}] quaternary Hermitian self-dual code are obtained with m≥2m \geq 2.     Standardized Soil Moisture Index for Drought Monitoring Based on SMAP Observations and 36 Years of NLDAS Data: A Case Study in the Southeast United States

    Droughts can severely reduce the productivity of agricultural lands and forests. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Southeast Regional Climate Hub (SERCH) has launched the Lately Identified Geospecific Heightened Threat System (LIGHTS) to inform its users of potential water deficiency threats. The system identifies droughts and other climate anomalies such as extreme precipitation and heat stress. However, the LIGHTS model lacks input from soil moisture observations. This research aims to develop a simple and easy-to-interpret soil moisture and drought warning index - Standardized Soil Moisture Index (SSI) - by fusing the space-borne Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) soil moisture data with the NLDAS climate index. Ground truth soil moisture data from the Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) were collected for validation. As a result, the accuracy of using SMAP to monitor soil moisture content generally displayed a good statistical correlation with the SCAN data. The validation through the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) suggested that SSI was effective and sensitive for short-term drought monitoring across large areas

Viral rebound occurred during treatment and sequencing of reverse transcriptase and integrase genes identified multiple resistance mutations. Similar to HIV infection, antiretroviral-resistance mutations may occur in SIV-infected nonhuman primates receiving nonsuppressive ART.     The Character and Formation of Elongated Depressions on the Upper Bulgarian Slope

    Seafloor elongated depressions are indicators of gas seepage or slope instability. Here we report a sequence of slope-parallel elongated depressions that link to headwalls of sediment slides on upper slope. The depressions of about 250 m in width and several kilometers in length are areas of focused gas discharge indicated by bubble-release into the water column and methane enriched pore waters. Sparker seismic profiles running perpendicular and parallel to the coast, show gas migration pathways and trapped gas underneath these depressions with bright spots and seismic blanking. The data indicate that upward gas migration is the initial reason for fracturing sedimentary layers. In the top sediment where two young stages of landslides can be detected, the slope-parallel sediment weakening lengthens and deepens the surficial fractures, creating the elongated depressions in the seafloor supported by sediment erosion due to slope-parallel water currents

    Dynamics of simian immunodeficiency virus two-long-terminal-repeat circles in the presence and absence of CD8+ Cells

All Rights ReservedCD8+ cells play a key role in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection, but their specific mechanism(s) of action in controlling the virus is unclear. Two-long-terminal-repeat (2-LTR) circles are extrachromosomal products generated upon failed integration of HIV/SIV. To understand the specific effects of CD8+ cells on infected cells, we analyzed the dynamics of 2-LTR circles in SIVmac251-infected rhesus macaques (RMs) treated with an integrase inhibitor (INT). Twenty RMs underwent CD8+ cell depletion and received raltegravir (RAL) monotherapy or a combination of both. Blood, lymph nodes (LNs), and gut biopsy specimens were routinely sampled. Plasma viral loads (pVLs) and 2-LTR circles from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and LN lymphocytes were measured with quantitative reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR). In the CD8 depletion group, an ∼1-log increase in pVLs and a slow increase in PBMC 2-LTRs occurred following depletion. In the INT group, a strong decline in pVLs upon treatment initiation and no change in 2-LTR levels were observed. In the INT and CD8+ cell depletion group, an increase in pVLs following CD8 depletion similar to that in the CD8 depletion group was observed, with a modest decline following INT initiation, and 2-LTR circles significantly increased in PBMCs and LNs. Analyzing the 2-LTR data across all treatment groups with a mathematical model indicates that the data best support an effect of CD8+ cells in killing cells prior to viral integration. Sensitivity analyses of these results confirm that effect but also allow for additional effects, which the data do not discriminate well. Overall, we show that INT does not significantly increase the levels of 2-LTR circles. However, CD8+ cell depletion increases the 2-LTR levels, which are enhanced in the presence of an INT.IMPORTANCE CD8+ T cells play an essential role in controlling HIV and SIV infection, but the specific mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Due to failed viral infection, HIV and SIV can form 2-LTR extrachromosomal circles that can be quantified. We present novel data on the dynamics of these 2-LTR forms in a SIV-infected macaque model under three different treatment conditions: depletion of CD8+ cells, administration of the integrase inhibitor in a monotherapy, which favors the formation of 2-LTR circles, and a combination of the two treatments. We used a new mathematical model to help interpret the data, and the results suggest that CD8+ cells exert a killing effect on infected cells prior to virus integration. These results provide new insights into the mechanisms of action of CD8+ cells in SIV infection.     EST analysis of gene expression in the tentacle of Cyanea capillata

    AbstractJellyfish, Cyanea capillata, has an important position in head patterning and ion channel evolution, in addition to containing a rich source of toxins. In the present study, 2153 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from the tentacle cDNA library of C. capillata were analyzed. The initial ESTs consisted of 198 clusters and 818 singletons, which revealed approximately 1016 unique genes in the data set. Among these sequences, we identified several genes related to head and foot patterning, voltage-dependent anion channel gene and genes related to biological activities of venom. Five kinds of proteinase inhibitor genes were found in jellyfish for the first time, and some of them were highly expressed with unknown functions
