    Species Status of Sclerocactus brevispinus, S. wetlandicus, and S. glaucus: Inferences from Morphology, Chloroplast DNA Sequences, and AFLP Markers

    We examine patterns of variation in 12 continuous morphological traits, chloroplast DNA sequences from 10 intergenic spacer regions (petA-psbJ, psbk-trnS, psbM-trnD, rpob-trnC, trnC-trnD, trnGCU-trnG2S, trnFM-trnUGA, atpF-atpH, trnT-trnD, trnQ-psbk), atpF, and rpl16, and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) genetic markers in Sclerocactus glaucus sensu lato (= S. brevispinus, S. glaucus, and S. wetlandicus), a complex that historically has been considered conspecific and afforded protection under the Endangered Species Act. This complex is considered to represent three different species by some authors. We describe the expected patterns of morphological, DNA, and AFLP variation under the conditions that (a) the complex is a single species, and (b) that there are three antonymous species. We show that morphological evidence is consistent with the presence of three significantly different morphological species. Chloroplast DNA sequences provide evidence that the populations of S. glaucus (restricted to Colorado) are a lineage distinct from the populations of S. brevispinus and S. wetlandicus (restricted to Utah). AFLP genetic markers reveal significant genetic divergence among S. brevispinus, S. glaucus, and S. wetlandicus. Equally important, there is greater divergence among species than among populations within the species. The three sources of evidence all support the presence of three species and not a single species. These results indicate that protection of S. glaucus as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, as historically prescribed, includes populations of three species, two in Utah (S. brevispinus and S. wetlandicus) and one in Colorado (S. glaucus)

    Agricultural policy implies new future scenarios for agricultural landscapes each time a new federal farm bill or emergency aid to farmers is debated. Future landscape scenario studies can suggest policies that could achieve specific goals or make the implications of proposed policy apparent.     Connecting Researchers to Data Repositories in the Earth, Space, and Environmental Sciences

    The Repository Finder tool was developed to help researchers in the domain of Earth, space, and environmental sciences to identify appropriate repositories where they can deposit their research data and to promote practices that implement the FAIR Principles, encouraging progress toward sharing data that are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Requirements for the design of the tool were gathered through a series of workshops and working groups as a part of the Enabling FAIR Data initiative led by the American Geophysical Union that included the development of a decision tree that researchers may follow in selecting a data repository, interviews with domain repository managers, and usability testing. The tool is hosted on the web by DataCite and enables a researcher to query all data repositories by keyword or to view a list of domain repositories that accept data for deposit, support open access, and provide persistent identifiers. Metadata records from the re3data.org registry of research data repositories and the returned results highlight repositories that have achieved trustworthy digital repository certification through a formal procedure such as the CoreTrust Seal

The definitive version was published in Geophysical Research Letters 33 (2006): L17606, doi:10.1029/2006GL026321.Submarine hydrothermal systems are hypothesized to be a potentially important source of monomethylmercury (MMHg) to the ocean, yet the amount of MMHg in vent fluids is unknown. Here, we report total Hg and MMHg concentrations in hydrothermal vent fluids sampled from the Sea Cliff site on the Gorda Ridge. MMHg is the dominant Hg species, and levels of total Hg are enhanced slightly compared to seawater. Hg is enriched in deposits surrounding the site, suggesting near-field deposition from fluid plumes, with rapid MMHg demethylation and scavenging of Hg(II) complexes. Assuming the flux of MMHg from Sea Cliff is representative of global submarine hydrothermal inputs, we estimate a flux of 0.1–0.4 Mmoles y−1, which may be attenuated by scavenging near the vents.
