Voice and verb morphology in Minangkabau, a language of West Sumatra, Indonesia
Minangkabau is an Austronesian, Indonesian-type language spoken in West Sumatra by approximately seven million speakers. Despite its large number of speakers and the spread of Minangkabau people throughout the Indonesian Archipelago, Minangkabau remains under-described when compared to other Indonesian-type languages like Javanese. This study seeks to improve current understanding about Minangkabau by describing its system of voice alternations and verb morphology. This study presents a novel analysis of the forms and functions of voice marking in Minangkabau, incorporating naturalistic data into the analysis as well as taking the findings of recent typological and theoretical studies of Austronesian languages into consideration. The study makes use of naturalistic, conversational and narrative data from a database maintained by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology Field Station in Padang. The study also makes use of elicited data collected in Perth and during fieldwork in Padang. Naturalistic and more formal, elicited Minangkabau data reveals different kinds of linguistic patterns, therefore this study makes a distinction between Colloquial Minangkabau and Standard Minangkabau. The study concludes that Minangkabau has a pragmatically motivated voice system encoded by the alternation between active voice, passive voice and the pasif semu construction. In addition, the study concludes that Minangkabau also has a conceptually motivated voice system that is encoded by a series of semantic and lexical/derivational affixes (ta-, pa-, and ba-) which show how the action originates and develops. The Minangkabau applicatives -an and -i are for the most part valency changing devices but operate within both the pragmatic and conceptual domains of Minangkabau voice. The active voice marker maN- also operates in both pragmatic and conceptual domains whereas the use of the passive voice marker di- is primarily motivated by pragmatic and syntactic factors. This analysis is supported by the finding that di- is a morphosyntactic clitic whereas the conceptual voice markers are affixes and have mainly lexico-semantic properties

Streaming Algorithms Via Reductions
In the streaming algorithms model of computation we must process data in order and without enough memory to remember the entire input. We study reductions between problems in the streaming model with an eye to using reductions as an algorithm design technique. Our contributions include:
* Linear Transformation reductions, which compose with existing linear sketch techniques. We use these for small-space algorithms for numeric measurements of distance-from-periodicity, finding the period of a numeric stream, and detecting cyclic shifts.
* The first streaming graph algorithms in the sliding window\u27 model, where we must consider only the most recent L elements for some fixed threshold L. We develop basic algorithms for connectivity and unweighted maximum matching, then develop a variety of other algorithms via reductions to these problems.
* A new reduction from maximum weighted matching to maximum unweighted matching. This reduction immediately yields improved approximation guarantees for maximum weighted matching in the semistreaming, sliding window, and MapReduce models, and extends to the more general problem of finding maximum independent sets in p-systems.
* Algorithms in a stream-of-samples model which exhibit clear sample vs. space tradeoffs. These algorithms are also inspired by examining reductions. We provide algorithms for calculating F_k frequency moments and graph connectivity
Collective Fluorescence Enhancement In Nanoparticle Clusters
Many nanoscale systems are known to emit light intermittently under continuous illumination. In the fluorescence of single semiconductor nanoparticles, the distributions of bright and dark periods (\u27on\u27 and \u27off\u27 times) follow Levy statistics. Although fluorescence from single-quantum dots and from macroscopic quantum dot ensembles has been studied, there has been little study of fluorescence from small ensembles. Here we show that blinking nanorods (NRs) interact with each other in a cluster, and the interactions affect the blinking statistics. The on-times in the fluorescence of a NR cluster increase dramatically; in a cluster with N NRs, the maximum on-time increases by a factor of N or more compared with the combined signal from N well-separated NRs. Our study emphasizes the use of statistical properties in identifying the collective dynamics. The scaling of this interaction-induced increase of on-times with number of NRs reveals a novel collective effect at the nanoscale
An almost Poisson structure for the generalized rigid body equations
In this paper we introduce almost Poisson structures on Lie groups which
generalize Poisson structures based on the use of the classical Yang-Baxter identity.
Almost Poisson structures fail to be Poisson structures in the sense that they do
not satisfy the Jacobi identity.In the case of cross products of Lie groups, we show
that an almost Poisson structure can be used to derive a system which is intimately
related to a fundamental Hamiltonian integrable system — the generalized rigid body
