The end-effector has the capabilities of a human hand and peel-off value as a human prosthetic device. The design evolved through two mock-up stages. The final form contains four electric motors. While thumb and forefinger bend, their ultimate phalanges maintain a parallel stance to one another. The grip centerline is at 45 degrees to the mounting base

    Design and fabrication of an end effector

    The construction is described of a prototype mechanical hand or 'end effector' for use on a remotely controlled robot, but with possible application as a prosthetic device. An analysis of hand motions is reported, from which it is concluded that the two most important manipulations (apart from grasps) are to be able to pick up a tool and draw it into a nested grip against the palm, and to be able to hold a pistol-grip tool such as an electric drill and pull the trigger. A model was tested and found capable of both these operations

    Role of the Exopolysaccharide Alginate in Adherence to and Inflammation of Pulmonary Epithelial Cells

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) infections in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients are not easily cleared due to the conversion from a nonmucoid to a mucoid phenotype. Alginate is an acetylated exopolysaccharide produced by mucoid PA that is responsible for increased resistance to antibiotics, host phagocytic killing, and propagating biofilm formation. Understanding the interaction between PA and host cells is critical to understanding chronic infection and inflammation in CF. In order to investigate this, we used A549 pulmonary epithelial cells and murine alveolar macrophages (MH-S) to examine host response to nonmucoid versus mucoid PA infection. Adhesion assays in A549 pulmonary epithelial cells revealed that mucoid PA mutants adhere poorly compared to their nonmucoid counterparts. Similarly, phagocytosis assays using MH-S infected with PA revealed that mucoid PA are increasingly resistant to phagocytosis. The alginate acetylation mutant FRD1175 is more susceptible to phagocytic killing than alginate+ FRD1. Adherence and phagocytosis of mucoid FRD1 was increased by increasing the multiplicity of infection (MOI) from 50:1 to 500:1. Furthermore, confocal microscopy revealed that mucoid PA are inherently less inflammatory than nonmucoid strains in both A549 and MH-S. Increasing the MOI of mucoid FRD1 from 50:1 to 500:1 significantly increased caspase-1 activation in MH-S but not in A549, revealing that intensity of inflammatory signaling by epithelial cells is likely independent of increased adherence. FRD1175 infection in both A549 and MH-S revealed that alginate acetylation plays a significant role in reducing inflammasome activation. Western analysis revealed that PA does not actively induce TGF-ÎČ secretion by A549 epithelial cells. Similarly, NF-ÎșB expression was reduced in both A549 and MH-S when infected with mucoid FRD strains, but not PA from the PAO background, suggesting FRD strains have accumulated additional mutations facilitating escape of inflammation. MH-S treated with cytochalasin D to block phagocytosis were still able to activate NF-ÎșB signaling, suggesting NF-ÎșB activation is adherence but not phagocytosis dependent. These data increase our understanding of the various mechanisms in which mucoid PA is able to evade host immune defenses and provides insight into potential therapies to treat PA infections

    Analogy Between Surface Shock Waves in a Liquid and Shocks in Compressible Gases: Experimental Study of Hydraulic-Jump Interactions

    It has been known for some time that an analogy exists between the flow of a liquid with a free surface and the flow of a compressible gas. A less accurate analogy has been shown to obtain between hydraulic jumps and compression shocks. The interaction of shocks can occur in two forms; the regular or two-shock configuration and the Mach or three-shock configuration. The latter configuration is not yet completely understood, either in the case of hydraulic jumps in a free-surface liquid or in the case of shocks in a compressible gas. This experimental study was primarily concerned with the Mach interactions of hydraulic jumps. The conclusions of this study are: (a) there is a definite disagreement between experiment and existing theory; (b) a depth discontinuity, or wave, rather than a velocity discontinuity separates the region behind the Mach wave from the region behind the reflected wave; (c) there is evidence that, for interactions of weak hydraulic jumps, there is a deviation from constant depth between waves; (d) the Mach wave is convex for the interaction of the stronger hydraulic jumps, but is concave for the interaction of weak hydraulic jumps; (e) measurements should not be made so as to allow for curvature of the Mach without considering the curvature of the incident and reflected waves in the neighborhood of the triple point

    Identifying the Optimal Age to Perform Newborn Screening for Hearing Loss in Uganda

    Background: Permanent congenital hearing loss affects up to 6/1000 births in developing countries. Currently, in Uganda there is no newborn screening for hearing loss (NSHL) program and no published work on this topic. Within the existing healthcare system there are two opportunities to deliver screening, at birth or 6 weeks of age when infants receive their immunizations. Aim: This study explored the outcomes of otoacoustic emission (OAE) testing in infants at birth and 6 weeks of age, to identify the optimal age for screening. Subjects and Methods: This cross‑sectional pilot study recruited 60 consecutive infants from two health centres in Kampala, Uganda. Thirty infants were newborns recruited from the postnatal ward and 30 were aged 4–8 weeks from the immunization clinic, we performed OAE testing on all infants. Results: The results showed 56.7% (17/30) of newborn infants passed OAE testing compared with 90.0% (27/30) of the immunization infants, P < 0.01. Furthermore, of the 11 newborn infants aged ≄24 h of age 90.9% (10/11) passed, compared with the 19 infants <24 h of age where 37% (7/19) passed, P < 0.01. Conclusions: This study demonstrates a higher pass rate for OAE testing for infants ≄24 h of age compared to those <24 h of age. The overall lower pass rate of the newborn infants could be due to external ear debris and middle ear fluid compromising the OAE testing. These findings would support a NSHL programme in Uganda that offers screening to infants ≄24 h of age, to maximize the cost‑effectiveness of the program.Keywords: Hearing loss, Newborn, Screenin

    This article explores a two-way relationship between stories and the experiential actions of bodies in the world. Through an autoethnographic approach, the article presents a series of interlinked story fragments in an effort to show and evoke a feel for the ways in which stories, bodies, and actions influence and shape each other over time. It offers some reflections on the experiences the stories portray from the perspective of a social constructionist conception of narrative theory and suggest that while stories exert a powerful influence on the actions of our bodies, our bodies intrude on or ‘talk back’ to this process because bodies have an existence beyond stories
