    Hysteresis and Post Walrasian Economics

Macroeconomics, hysteresis The β€œnew consensus” dsge (dynamic stochastic general equilibrium) macroeconomic model has microfoundations provided by a single representative agent. In this model shocks to the economic environment do not have any lasting effects. In reality adjustments at the micro level are made by heterogeneous agents, and the aggregation problem cannot be assumed away. In this paper we show that the discontinuous adjustments made by heterogeneous agents at the micro level mean that shocks have lasting effects, aggregate variables containing a selective, erasable memory of the shocks experienced. This hysteresis framework provides foundations for the post-Walrasian analysis of macroeconomic systems

The stochastic dynamics of nanoscale mechanical oscillators immersed in a viscous fluid

    Get PDF
The stochastic response of nanoscale oscillators of arbitrary geometry immersed in a viscous fluid is studied. Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem it is shown that deterministic calculations of the governing fluid and solid equations can be used in a straightforward manner to directly calculate the stochastic response that would be measured in experiment. We use this approach to investigate the fluid coupled motion of single and multiple cantilevers with experimentally motivated geometries.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

THE ECONOMICS OF ILLEGAL FISHING: A BEHAVIORAL MODEL

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the microeconomic behavior of fishers responding to imperfectly enforced regulations through illegal fishing and efforts to avoid detection. An intraseasonal optimization model is analyzed to determine optimal (profit-maximizing) harvesting strategies at the individual fisher level in response to input controls (such as gear or labor usage) or output controls (individual harvest quotas). For each regulatory option, the analysis explores: (a) the manner by which enforcement affects individual decisions concerning fishing and avoidance activity, (b) the level of enforcement necessary to achieve specified conservation goals, and (c) the role of various behavioral parameters in determining fisher decisions. It is shown, in particular, that the nature of avoidance behavior plays a crucial role in determining fisher response to regulations. Broad implications of illegal behavior on the sustainability of fishery systems are also discussed.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Method of treating fescue toxicosis with domperidone

    Get PDF
A novel method for using domperidone, a dopamine receptor antagonist, for treating fescue toxicosis in animals is provided. Fescue toxicosis is caused by animals grazing on endophyte-infected fescue grass. Treatment of the animal with various dosages of domperidone results in effective management of the toxin. The domperidone treatments do not cause any substantial adverse behavioral or neurological side effects in the animal. Domperidone is a more effective treatment for fescue toxicosis than previously-known agents such a metoclopramide and sulpiride

Job-embedded, collaborative and reflective professional development for university administrators : the action learning pedagogy

    Get PDF
International audienceJob-embedded, collaborative, and reflective professional development programmes have generally been praised internationally for promoting knowledge sharing and meeting the learning needs of extremely busy practitioners, such as university academic and administrative staff. However, in the Southern African context where, for a variety of reasons, professional development draws extensively on traditional pedagogies, their usefulness has not been fully tested. Analysing the experiences of 11 participants of the Programme for University Leadership in the Southern African Region (PULSAR) and subsequent developments within their own institutions, this article shows how Action Learning can be used as a tool for change for university senior administrators. Through this job-embedded, collaborative, and reflective pedagogy, Action Learning provides enabling conditions for university administrators to unlearn, learn and relearn engagement strategies (e.g., questioning and listening skills, participative teamwork) to approach workplace problems differently, and in the process, build more effective working relationships

NASA rotor system research aircraft flight-test data report: Helicopter and compound configuration

    Get PDF
The flight test activities of the Rotor System Research Aircraft (RSRA), NASA 740, from June 30, 1981 to August 5, 1982 are reported. Tests were conducted in both the helicopter and compound configurations. Compound tests reconfirmed the Sikorsky flight envelope except that main rotor blade bending loads reached endurance at a speed about 10 knots lower than previously. Wing incidence changes were made from 0 to 10 deg

A Passive Phase Noise Cancellation Element

    Get PDF
We introduce a new method for reducing phase noise in oscillators, thereby improving their frequency precision. The noise reduction device consists of a pair of coupled nonlinear resonating elements that are driven parametrically by the output of a conventional oscillator at a frequency close to the sum of the linear mode frequencies. Above the threshold for parametric response, the coupled resonators exhibit self-oscillation at an inherent frequency. We find operating points of the device for which this periodic signal is immune to frequency noise in the driving oscillator, providing a way to clean its phase noise. We present results for the effect of thermal noise to advance a broader understanding of the overall noise sensitivity and the fundamental operating limits
