Pinning control of spatiotemporal chaos
Linear control theory is used to develop an improved localized control scheme for spatially extended chaotic systems, which is applied to a coupled map lattice as an example. The optimal arrangement of the control sites is shown to depend on the symmetry properties of the system, while their minimal density depends on the strength of noise in the system. The method is shown to work in any region of parameter space and requires a significantly smaller number of controllers compared to the method proposed earlier by Hu and Qu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 68 (1994)]. A nonlinear generalization of the method for a 1D lattice is also presented
Comment on ``The linear instability of magnetic Taylor-Couette flow with Hall effect''
In the paper we comment on (R\"udiger & Shalybkov, Phys. Rev. E. 69, 016303
(2004) (RS)), the instability of the Taylor--Couette flow interacting with a
homogeneous background field subject to Hall effect is studied. We correct a
falsely generalizing interpretation of results presented there which could be
taken to disprove the existence of the Hall--drift induced magnetic instability
described in Rheinhardt and Geppert, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 101103. It is shown
that in contrast to what is suggested by RS, no additional shear flow is
necessary to enable such an instability with a non--potential magnetic
background field, whereas for a curl--free one it is. In the latter case, the
instabilities found in RS in situations where neither a hydrodynamic nor a
magneto--rotational instability exists are demonstrated to be most likely
magnetic instead of magnetohydrodynamic. Further, some minor inaccuracies are

Seed Testa Morphology of 18 Species of Rafnia Thunb. (Fam. Fabaceae, Sub-Family Papilionoideae)
Scanning electron microscopy was used to conduct a micromorphological study of testae of the seeds of 18 species of Rafnia Thunb. (Fam. Fabaceae, Sub-family Papilionoideae). The testa patterns revealed diagnostic taxonomic features which proved useful in the construction of a key for the identification of the various Rafnia species. Comparisons between air-dried freshly collected, and long-term stored herbarium specimens revealed that testa patterns remained consistent and valid for taxonomic purposes
Power-Law Behavior of Power Spectra in Low Prandtl Number Rayleigh-Benard Convection
The origin of the power-law decay measured in the power spectra of low
Prandtl number Rayleigh-Benard convection near the onset of chaos is addressed
using long time numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Boussinesq
equations in cylindrical domains. The power-law is found to arise from
quasi-discontinuous changes in the slope of the time series of the heat
transport associated with the nucleation of dislocation pairs and roll
pinch-off events. For larger frequencies, the power spectra decay exponentially
as expected for time continuous deterministic dynamics.Comment: (10 pages, 6 figures
NASA rotor system research aircraft flight-test data report: Helicopter and compound configuration
The flight test activities of the Rotor System Research Aircraft (RSRA), NASA 740, from June 30, 1981 to August 5, 1982 are reported. Tests were conducted in both the helicopter and compound configurations. Compound tests reconfirmed the Sikorsky flight envelope except that main rotor blade bending loads reached endurance at a speed about 10 knots lower than previously. Wing incidence changes were made from 0 to 10 deg

The WFCAM Multi-wavelength Variable Star Catalog
Stellar variability in the near-infrared (NIR) remains largely unexplored.
The exploitation of public science archives with data-mining methods offers a
perspective for the time-domain exploration of the NIR sky. We perform a
comprehensive search for stellar variability using the optical-NIR multi-band
photometric data in the public Calibration Database of the WFCAM Science
Archive (WSA), with the aim of contributing to the general census of variable
stars, and to extend the current scarce inventory of accurate NIR light curves
for a number of variable star classes. We introduce new variability indices
designed for multi-band data with correlated sampling, and apply them for
pre-selecting variable star candidates, i.e., light curves that are dominated
by correlated variations, from noise-dominated ones. Pre-selection criteria are
established by robust numerical tests for evaluating the response of
variability indices to colored noise characteristic to the data. We find 275
periodic variable stars and an additional 44 objects with suspected variability
with uncertain periods or apparently aperiodic variation. Only 44 of these
objects had been previously known, including 11 RR~Lyrae stars in the outskirts
of the globular cluster M3 (NGC~5272). We provide a preliminary classification
of the new variable stars that have well-measured light curves, but the
variability types of a large number of objects remain ambiguous. We classify
most of the new variables as contact binary stars, but we also find several
pulsating stars, among which 34 are probably new field RR~Lyrae and 3 are
likely Cepheids. We also identify 32 highly reddened variable objects close to
previously known dark nebulae, suggesting that these are embedded young stellar
objects. We publish our results and all light-curve data as the WFCAM Variable

Who Contributes to the Knowledge Sharing Economy?
Information sharing dynamics of social networks rely on a small set of
influencers to effectively reach a large audience. Our recent results and
observations demonstrate that the shape and identity of this elite, especially
those contributing \emph{original} content, is difficult to predict.
Information acquisition is often cited as an example of a public good. However,
this emerging and powerful theory has yet to provably offer qualitative
insights on how specialization of users into active and passive participants
occurs.
This paper bridges, for the first time, the theory of public goods and the
analysis of diffusion in social media. We introduce a non-linear model of
\emph{perishable} public goods, leveraging new observations about sharing of
media sources. The primary contribution of this work is to show that
\emph{shelf time}, which characterizes the rate at which content get renewed,
is a critical factor in audience participation. Our model proves a fundamental
\emph{dichotomy} in information diffusion: While short-lived content has simple
and predictable diffusion, long-lived content has complex specialization. This
occurs even when all information seekers are \emph{ex ante} identical and could
be a contributing factor to the difficulty of predicting social network

The monoclinic phase in PZT: new light on morphotropic phase boundaries
A summary of the work recently carried out on the morphotropic phase boundary
(MPB) of PZT is presented. By means of x-ray powder diffraction on ceramic
samples of excellent quality, the MPB has been successfully characterized by
changing temperature in a series of closely spaced compositions. As a result,
an unexpected monoclinic phase has been found to exist in between the
well-known tetragonal and rhombohedral PZT phases. A detailed structural
analysis, together with the investigation of the field effect in this region of
compositions, have led to an important advance in understanding the mechanisms
responsible for the physical properties of PZT as well as other piezoelectric

Multi-mode coupling wave theory for helically corrugated waveguide
Helically corrugated waveguide has been used in various applications such as gyro-backward wave oscillators, gyro-traveling wave amplifier and microwave pulse compressor. A fast prediction of the dispersion characteristic of the operating eigenwave is very important when designing a helically corrugated waveguide. In this paper, multi-mode coupling wave equations were developed based on the perturbation method. This method was then used to analyze a five-fold helically corrugated waveguide used for X-band microwave compression. The calculated result from this analysis was found to be in excellent agreement with the results from numerical simulation using CST Microwave Studio and vector network analyzer measurements
