    Gamma Protocadherin Expression in the Embryonic Chick Nervous System

    Protocadherin γ (pcdh-γ) family expression was examined in the embryonic chick central nervous system by in situ hybridization. Transcripts were visualized in discrete regions of fore-, mid-, and hindbrain at stages 23 and 25 and in spinal cord and optic lobe at stages 27 and 43, respectively. Results suggest that pcdh-γ may function cooperatively with other cell adhesion molecules in neuronal differentiation and establishment of neural networks in several areas of the developing brain, particularly regions involved in visual processing

    Intrinsic Optical Transition Energies in Carbon Nanotubes

    Intrinsic optical transition energies for isolated and individual single wall carbon nanotubes grown over trenches are measured using tunable resonant Raman scattering. Previously measured E22_S optical transitions from nanotubes in surfactants are blue shifted 70-90 meV with respect to our measurements of nanotubes in air. This large shift in the exciton energy is attributed to a larger change of the exciton binding energy than the band-gap renormalization as the surrounding dielectric constant increases.Comment: Due to a mistake, a different paper was submitted as "revised v2".     Maths Sparks: Promoting student engagement and developing skills in presentation, communication and team-work

    Two prominent concerns of mathematics education at third level are: improving the engagement of undergraduate students who have chosen to study mathematics and developing these students’ communication skills. Maths Sparks: Problem Solving Workshops is a mathematics enrichment programme where workshops are designed by undergraduate students and presented to post-primary pupils. This programme is run by the UCD School of Mathematics & Statistics and is funded and supported by Science Foundation Ireland and UCD Access & Lifelong Learning. Undergraduate students apply to volunteer in the programme, which is run over the course of one semester, with the opportunity to develop their skills of designing a mathematics workshop, working in a team, facilitating mathematical learning, presenting to a large audience and communicating their knowledge of mathematics.     Mathematics is different : student and tutor perspectives from Ireland and Australia on online support during COVID-19

    From March 2020, the Mathematics Support Centre at University College Dublin, Ireland, and the Mathematics Education Support Hub at Western Sydney University, Australia, moved wholly online and have largely remained so to the point of writing (August 2021). The dramatic and swift changes brought on by COVID-19, in particular to fully online modes of teaching and learning including mathematics and statistics support (MSS), have presented students and tutors with a host of new opportunities for thinking and working. This study aims to gain insight both from students and tutors about their experience of wholly online learning and tutoring in the COVID-19 era. In this sense, it represents a ‘perspectives’ study, the idea being that before we examine specific aspects of this experience, it would be best to know what the issues are. Employing a qualitative analysis framework of 23 one-on-one interview transcripts with tutors and students from both institutions in Australia and Ireland, we identified five key themes as central to the shared experiences and perspectives of tutors and students. In this study, we discuss three of these themes in relation to the new normal with the intention of supporting MSS practitioners, researchers and students going forward. The themes describe the usage of online support, how mathematics is different and the future of online MSS

    First On-Line International Colloquium on Translation : Intercultural Transfer

    During the month of March 1997 the Facultat de Traducció i d'Interpretació of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona held its first on-line international translation colloquium, dedicated to the subject of intercultural transfer. A dedicated Web site was established to house invited position papers on the subject by Doug Robinson and Anthony Pym, and a response by Michael Cronin. An electronic mailing list was established to permit discussion of the position papers, and messages received were also housed at the Web site. Some 160 participants from 35 countries took part in the colloquium. The extracts published here include the position papers and a selection of responses elicited by the discussion.Al llarg del mes de març de 1997, la Facultat de Traducció i d'Interpretació de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona va dur a terme el seu primer col·loqui internacional en línia de traducció, amb la transferència intercultural com a tema principal. Es van publicar en pàgines web les ponències convidades de Doug Robinson i d'Anthony Pym, i una resposta de Michael Cronin. Es va crear una llista electrònica per fomentar el debat, i es van publicar els missatges rebuts al mateix lloc. Hi van participar unes 160 persones de 35 països.
