Belt and Road Initiative: The emerging China-EU railway and the opportunity for Italy
It has been a decade since the President Xi Jinping officially announced the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), commonly known also as One Belt One Road (OBOR). Defined as the largest political infrastructural project, BRI has not equivalent that rivals its scale, ambition and commitment.
As a combination of two existing routes, the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the 21st Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI), the project primarily aims at connecting three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa – through a number of infrastructure investments along both the maritime and land routes.
The present research is articulated in three main parts: opened by a descriptive introduction that frames the BRI, the first paragraph focuses on one of the most important branches of the project that is the railway line linking China and Europe. The second paragraph proceeds with a comparative analysis, conducted with the main purpose of detecting the pros and cons of each freight transportation mode, namely sea, air and railway. The analysis provides information about time and costs, including an investigation on the correlation between the transport mode and the category of goods shipped.
In the end, the paper investigates the possible impact that the China-EU railway development could bring on Italy. The strategic geographical position and the crucial role within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) provides Italy the opportunity to benefit from the development of China-EU railway. Italy geographical location and its leading position in the machinery sector will be evaluated as two potential strengths to enhance within the emerging China-EU railway
Young people, young adults and Binge Drinking
Introduction and Purpose
The consumption of alcohol among young people and young adults has undergone, in recent decades, a sharp upsurge with the increasingly frequent intake of large quantities of alcohol. The aim of our study was to investigate socio-demographic, economic and behavioural factors that have a major impact on the voluntary alcohol habit in young people.
Methods
The survey was conducted via administration of an anonymous questionnaire based on “the WHO Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test”, disseminated on-line , to young people and young adults (aged 18 to 35)
Results
We examined a sample of 365 subjects. Consumption of wine and beer were predominant followed by super-alcohol mixes. We found correlations between alcohol use and the following variables: marital status (p<0.001), parental education(mother p<0.05; father p<0.001), income level(p<0.05), physical activity (p<0.05) and voluptuous habits(smoke and coffee: p<0.001.The 5% of men and 1% of women had car accidents during the previous year due to alcohol use and 15% said they did not remember what happened in an alcoholic evening once or twice a month.
Conclusions
The phenomenon of alcohol consummation is deeply ingrained in our reality, with dangerous episodes of binge drinking in young adults with a higher prevalence in the female sex
Core–Shell Pluronic-Organosilica Nanoparticles with Controlled Polarity and Oxygen Permeability
Nanostructured systems constitute versatile carriers with multiple functions engineered in a nanometric space. Yet, such multimodality often requires adapting the chemistry of the nanostructure to the properties of the hosted functional molecules. Here, we show the preparation of core-shell Pluronic-organosilica "PluOS" nanoparticles with the use of a library of organosilane precursors. The precursors are obtained via a fast and quantitative click reaction, starting from cost-effective reagents such as diamines and an isocyanate silane derivative, and they condensate in building blocks characterized by a balance between hydrophobic and H-bond-rich domains. As nanoscopic probes for local polarity, oxygen permeability, and solvating properties, we use, respectively, solvatochromic, phosphorescent, and excimer-forming dyes covalently linked to the organosilica matrix during synthesis. The results obtained here clearly show that the use of these organosilane precursors allows for finely tuning polarity, oxygen permeability, and solvating properties of the resulting organosilica core, expanding the toolbox for precise engineering of the particle properties
Trend of MDR-microorganisms isolated from the biological samples of patients with HAI and from the surfaces around that patient
Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) continue to be a major public health concern. A number of epidemiologically relevant HAI microorganisms are multidrug-resistant (MDR) germs that can spread rapidly and/or carry multiple resistance to antibiotics. They are the cause of high mortality and possible nosocomial epidemics. For this reason, we implemented microbiological surveillance acquiring samples from patients with HAI and environmental samples from the surfaces surrounding those patients. A retrospective study was carried out from January 2014 to December 2016 in two departments of the University Hospital in Messina, Italy: the Microbiology and the Hygiene Laboratories. A comparison was made between the microbiological isolates found on the patients and the microorganisms typed further to environmental sampling on the surfaces adjacent to the patient with HAI. There was a 24% match in 2014, 22% in 2015 and 20% in 2016 on total isolates. The most common isolates belonged to the Enterobacteriacae family: in particular, an ever-increasing trend has been registered for Klebsiella spp; Acinetobacter baumannii and multiresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa have seen a growing trend for both patient and environmental samples. During the three years, the highest infection prevalence rate was found in Anaesthesia and Resuscitation, followed by Thoracic and Vascular Surgery
An observational study on the effects of early and late risk factors on the development of childhood obesity in the South of Italy
Background: Child obesity is today one of the greatest health emergencies, on such a large scale as to be considered a global epidemic by the WHO and, unfortunately, Italy holds the worst European record.
Methods: We conducted an observational study to investigate the effects of early and late risk factors on the development of primary childhood obesity. We collected anthropometric parameters, information about early risk markers and late risk factors on a sample of 280 children from March 2016 to December 2017.
Results: Statistically significant associations emerged between: child's BMI and education level of the mother (p<0.001) and the father (p<0.05); level of parents' education and qualitative variables (subjects’ physical activity level (p<0.05), consumption of carbonated beverages (p<0.05), fruit juices (p <0.05) and snacks (p<0.05); BMI and the presence or absence of a family history of obesity, DM and cardiovascular diseases. Significant linear correlations were found between weight classification (overweight/obese) and the consumption of carbonated drinks (p<0.05), snack consumption (p<0.05), physical activity levels (p<0.001) and duration of sleep in the afternoon (p<0.05).
Conclusions: In our sample we found incorrect eating habits to be frequently linked to a low level of parental education; particularly for the mother, the main childcare provider
Distribution and export of particulate organic carbon in East Antarctic coastal polynyas
Polynyas represent regions of enhanced primary production because of the low, or absent, sea-ice cover coupled with the proximity of nutrient sources. However, studies throughout the Southern Ocean suggest elevated primary production does not necessarily result in increased carbon export. Three coastal polynyas in East Antarctica and an off-shelf region were visited during the austral summer from December 2016 to January 2017 to examine the vertical distribution and concentration of particulate organic carbon (POC). Carbon export was also examined using thorium-234 (234Th) as a proxy at two of the polynyas. Our results show that concentrations and integrated POC stocks were higher within the polynyas compared to the off-shelf sites. Within the polynyas, vertical POC concentrations were higher in the Mertz and Ninnis polynyas compared to the Dalton polynya. Similarly, higher carbon export was measured in the diatom-dominated Mertz polynya, where large particles ( \u3e 53 μm) represented a significant fraction of the particulate 234Th and POC (average 50 % and 39 %, respectively), compared to the small flagellate-dominated Dalton polynya, where almost all the particulate 234Th and POC were found in the smaller size fraction (1 – 53 μm). The POC to Chlorophyll-a ratios suggest that organic matter below the mixed layer in the polynyas consisted largely of fresh phytoplankton at this time of the year. In combination with a parallel study on phytoplankton production at these sites, we find that increased primary production at these polynyas does lead to greater concentrations and export of POC and a higher POC export efficiency
An evaluation of gambling addiction and video lottery in the South of Italy
Nowadays, pathological gambling is an emerging health problem. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM 5) renames it as 'Gambling Disorder' (GD), thus recognising its highly dependent status. A study was conducted from April 2016 to August 2017 to evaluate the prevalence of this phenomenon by administering an ad hoc questionnaire to adult individuals (both sexes) over the age of 18.
We analysed a sample of 562 individuals with DSM 5 criteria. We obtained a score > 4 indicating a possible mild gambling disorder in 1.6% of the sample and a score > 6 corresponding to a moderate GD in 2.3% of the sample. We observed that the main motivations for gambling were “having fun” and “the prospect of winning” and 10.9% of respondents had played more than they intended. Furthermore, "problematic" players showed to be more prone to alcohol abuse than "social" players (p < 0.001). Only 7.5% of respondents had already gambling problems in their family (involving in particular their mothers). The phenomenon is, therefore, quite common in our area and, indeed, 64.1% of the sample believes that gambling is a problem in their own territory, however only 20.6% would know where to find help. In conclusion, given the high socio-economic impact of this phenomenon, we believe that it is imperative to establish structured preventions programs in order to to contain the spread of this phenomenon.

FIVE-YEAR MICROBIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF WARDS AND OPERATING THEATRES IN SOUTHERN ITALY
INTRODUCTION. Nosocomial infections are one of the greatest problems in public health. Several studies have highlighted the role played by the hospital environment as a possible source of transmission of nosocomial pathogens.METHODS. A five-year monitoring of bacterial contamination on healthcare workers hands, surfaces most closely in contact with inpatient wards, operating theatres and “at rest” and “in use” operating theatre air samples. For the samples, we used sterile swabs, contact slides, manual API, and automated VITEK systems for identification.RESULTS. In the five-year period, a total of 9396 samples were collected and analysed. In ward patients, 4398 samplings were carried out with 4.7%, 9.4%, 7%, 10.8% and 7.9% positive results respectively from 2010 to 2014. For hands, 648 samplings were carried out, with a positivity of 40.74%. In operating theatres, 4188 samples were taken, with a positivity of 11.9%. Regarding air in empty and full theatres, 1962 samplings were carried out with a positivity rate equal to 31.9%. The monitoring showed a low rate of contamination with a progressive decrease in the five-year period on operating theatres surfaces and hands, while there was an increase in the surgical site wards and in the air of operating rooms.CONCLUSIONS. Our investigation has revealed the presence of pathogens on the assessed surfaces and the need for environmental monitoring, which can be a valuable tool for reducing contamination
