Panspermia, Past and Present: Astrophysical and Biophysical Conditions for the Dissemination of Life in Space
Astronomically, there are viable mechanisms for distributing organic material
throughout the Milky Way. Biologically, the destructive effects of ultraviolet
light and cosmic rays means that the majority of organisms arrive broken and
dead on a new world. The likelihood of conventional forms of panspermia must
therefore be considered low. However, the information content of dam-aged
biological molecules might serve to seed new life (necropanspermia).Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Review
The FuturICT education accelerator
Education is a major force for economic and social wellbeing. Despite high aspirations, education at all levels can be expensive and ineffective. Three Grand Challenges are identified: (1) enable people to learn orders of magnitude more effectively, (2) enable people to learn at orders of magnitude less cost, and (3) demonstrate success by exemplary interdisciplinary education in complex systems science. A ten year ‘man-on-the-moon’ project is proposed in which FuturICT’s unique combination of Complexity, Social and Computing Sciences could provide an urgently needed transdisciplinary language for making sense of educational systems. In close dialogue with educational theory and practice, and grounded in the emerging data science and learning analytics paradigms, this will translate into practical tools (both analytical and computational) for researchers, practitioners and leaders; generative principles for resilient educational ecosystems; and innovation for radically scalable, yet personalised, learner engagement and assessment. The proposed Education Accelerator will serve as a ‘wind tunnel’ for testing these ideas in the context of real educational programmes, with an international virtual campus delivering complex systems education exploiting the new understanding of complex, social, computationally enhanced organisational structure developed within FuturICT

Mass-dependent predation risk as a mechanism for house sparrow declines?
House sparrow (Passer domesticus) numbers have declined rapidly in both rural and urban habitats across Western Europe over the last 30 years, leading to their inclusion on the UK conservation red list. The decline in farmland has been linked to a reduction in winter survival caused by reduced food supply. This reduction in food supply is associated with agricultural intensification that has led to the loss of seed-rich winter stubble and access to spilt grain. However, urban house sparrows have also declined, suggesting that reduced food supply in farmland is not the sole reason for the decline. Here, we show that changes in house sparrow mass and thus fat reserves are not regulated to minimize starvation risk, as would be expected if limited winter food were the only cause of population decline. Instead, the species appears to be responding to mass-dependent predation risk, with starvation risk and predation risk traded-off such that house sparrows may be particularly vulnerable to environmental change that reduces the predictability of the food supply
Terapia comportamental com famÃlias de crianças agressivas: por que, como e quando
Partindo de três perguntas-chave - por que, como e quando promover uma terapia com famÃlias de crianças agressivas - este trabalho objetiva demonstrar a relevância de uma intervenção envolvendo pais e crianças com problemas de conduta. É baseado na demanda crescente de atendimento infantil decorrente de dificuldades de natureza interpessoal, bem como na revisão da literatura, que aponta os estressores ambientais sobre a famÃlia e a ausência de habilidades cognitivas no repertório da criança como elementos a serem considerados na elaboração de estratégias clÃnicas. Estas devem ser aplicadas precocemente, a fim de se obter resultados mais eficazes. São descritas as atividades desenvolvidas pelo Programa de Pós-graduação em Psicologia ClÃnica da Universidade de São Paulo - USP, envolvendo: l) medidas de percepção dos pais e pares; 2) sessões terapêuticas com os pais e com as crianças; 3) análise da interação familiar, gravada em fita-cassete pelos próprios pais. Também são apresentadas as atividades do grupo recreativo infantil desenvolvido na clÃnica-escola do Instituto de Psicologia da USP durante o processo terapêutico com a famÃlia
