    UK Geoenergy Observatories Cheshire : hydraulic testing of TH0424 technical summary

    This report details the schedule and results of hydraulic testing of the TH0424 ground investigation borehole at the UK Geoenergy Observatory (UKGeos) Cheshire borehole array, Thornton Science Park during October 2022. UKGeos aims to establish new centres for world-leading research into the subsurface environment, generating data and knowledge to inform responsible development of new subsurface technologies (https://www.ukgeos.ac.uk/). Observatories are currently being developed at Thornton Science Park (TSP) in Cheshire (near the villages of Thornton and Elton), and near the Cuningar Loop of the River Clyde, Glasgow. Hydraulic testing was conducted using a straddle packer system to allow for isolated testing through the entire length of the water column, and to isolate specific features of interest (e.g. fractures, low permeability zones etc.), employing step and constant rate pumping test methodologies to provide response data that can be applied to hydraulic property models. The isolation of specific zones also allowed for the opportunity to collect groundwater samples and hydrochemical parameters, providing a profile of hydrochemical composition. The straddle packer system allows characterisation of dominant flow paths within the borehole and thus will aid in informing the design of multilevel monitoring boreholes within the array. This report does not serve as an interpretation of the collected data (although some basic analysis is undertaken), but rather aims to provide context to the collected dataset that can be utilised by the wider scientific research community. Development of the site at the time of testing (drilling of boreholes in close proximity) resulted in sub-optimal conditions for hydraulic testing and thus some data have been impacted by these activities. Perturbations or deviations in data thought to arise from these activities have been highlighted where possible. Abstractions from the Thornton Science Park abstraction borehole c.350m from the UKGeos array is also known to be detected at TH0424 with the site sitting within the radius of influence. Abstraction events taking place during individual tests have been highlighted and the full record of abstractions for the testing period is available. Borehole information packs available from UKGeos also provide daily drillers borehole records to relate any potential impacts from drilling activities. Considering the above caveats, care should be taken when using the data obtained during hydraulic testing and it should only be used in context of local activities, events or works.     Monitoring of methane in groundwater from the Vale of Pickering, UK: temporal variability and source discrimination

    Groundwater abstracted from aquifers in the Vale of Pickering, North Yorkshire, UK and monitored over the period 2015–2022, shows evidence of variable but commonly high concentrations of dissolved CH4. Sampled groundwater from the Jurassic organic-rich Kimmeridge Clay Formation (boreholes up to 180 m depth) has concentrations up to 57 mg/L, and concentrations up to 59 mg/L are found in groundwater from underlying confined Corallian Group limestone (borehole depths 50–227 m). The high concentrations are mainly from boreholes in the central parts of the vale. Small concentrations of ethane (C2H6, up to 800 μg/L) have been found in the Kimmeridge Clay and confined Corallian groundwaters, and of propane (C3H8, up to 160 μg/L) in deeper boreholes (110–180 m) from these formations. The concentrations are typically higher in groundwater from the deeper boreholes and vary with hydrostatic pressure, reflecting the pressure control on CH4 solubility. The occurrences contrast with groundwater from shallow Quaternary superficial deposits which have low CH4 concentrations (up to 0.39 mg/L), and with the unconfined and semi-confined sections of the Corallian aquifer (up to 0.7 mg/L) around the margins of the vale. Groundwater from the Quaternary, Kimmeridge Clay formations and to a small extent the confined Corallian aquifer, supports local private-water supplies, that from the peripheral unconfined sections of Corallian also supports public supply for towns and villages across the region. Dissolved methane/ethane (C1/C2) ratios and stable-isotopic compositions (δ13C-CH4, δ2H-CH4 and δ13C-CO2) suggest that the high-CH4 groundwater from both the Kimmeridge Clay and confined Corallian formations derives overwhelmingly from biogenic reactions, the methanogenesis pathway by CO2 reduction. A small minority of groundwater samples shows a more enriched δ13C-CH4 composition (−50 to −44 ‰) which has been interpreted as due to anaerobic or aerobic methylotrophic oxidation in situ or post-sampling oxidation, rather than derivation by a thermogenic route. Few of the existing groundwater sites are proximal to abandoned or disused conventional hydrocarbon wells that exist in the region, and little evidence has been found for an influence on groundwater dissolved gases from these sites. The Vale of Pickering has also been under recent consideration for development of an unconventional hydrocarbon (shale-gas) resource. In this context, the monitoring of dissolved gases has been an important step in establishing the high-CH4 baseline of groundwaters from Jurassic deposits in the region and in apportioning their sources and mechanisms of genesis

    CDMSlite: A Search for Low-Mass WIMPs using Voltage-Assisted Calorimetric Ionization Detection in the SuperCDMS Experiment

    SuperCDMS is an experiment designed to directly detect Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), a favored candidate for dark matter ubiquitous in the Universe. In this paper, we present WIMP-search results using a calorimetric technique we call CDMSlite, which relies on voltage- assisted Luke-Neganov amplification of the ionization energy deposited by particle interactions. The data were collected with a single 0.6 kg germanium detector running for 10 live days at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. A low energy threshold of 170 eVee (electron equivalent) was obtained, which allows us to constrain new WIMP-nucleon spin-independent parameter space for WIMP masses below 6 GeV/c2.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    This report presents the results and interpretation for Phase 5 of an integrated environmental monitoring programme that is being undertaken around two proposed shale gas sites in England – Preston New Road, Lancashire and Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire. The report should be read in conjunction with previous reports freely available through the project website1 . These provide additional background to the project, presentation of earlier results and the rationale for establishment of the different elements of the monitoring programme

    Dark matter effective field theory scattering in direct detection experiments

    We examine the consequences of the effective field theory (EFT) of dark matter–nucleon scattering for current and proposed direct detection experiments. Exclusion limits on EFT coupling constants computed using the optimum interval method are presented for SuperCDMS Soudan, CDMS II, and LUX, and the necessity of combining results from multiple experiments in order to determine dark matter parameters is discussed. We demonstrate that spectral differences between the standard dark matter model and a general EFT interaction can produce a bias when calculating exclusion limits and when developing signal models for likelihood and machine learning techniques. We also discuss the implications of the EFT for the next-generation (G2) direct detection experiments and point out regions of complementarity in the EFT parameter space.National Science Foundation (U.S.)United States.     Improved WIMP-search reach of the CDMS II germanium data

    CDMS II data from the five-tower runs at the Soudan Underground Laboratory were reprocessed with an improved charge-pulse fitting algorithm. Two new analysis techniques to reject surface-event backgrounds were applied to the 612 kg days germanium-detector weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-search exposure. An extended analysis was also completed by decreasing the 10 keV analysis threshold to ~5  keV, to increase sensitivity near a WIMP mass of 8  GeV/c[superscript 2]. After unblinding, there were zero candidate events above a deposited energy of 10 keV and six events in the lower-threshold analysis. This yielded minimum WIMP-nucleon spin-independent scattering cross-section limits of 1.8 × 10[superscript −44] and 1.18 × 10[superscript −41] at 90% confidence for 60 and 8.6  GeV/c[superscript 2] WIMPs, respectively. This improves the previous CDMS II result by a factor of 2.4 (2.7) for 60 (8.6)  GeV/c[superscript 2] WIMPs.National Science Foundation (U.S.)United States.     Maximum Likelihood Analysis of Low Energy CDMS II Germanium Data

    We report on the results of a search for a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) signal in low-energy data of the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment using a maximum likelihood analysis. A background model is constructed using geant4 to simulate the surface-event background from Pb210 decay-chain events, while using independent calibration data to model the gamma background. Fitting this background model to the data results in no statistically significant WIMP component. In addition, we perform fits using an analytic ad hoc background model proposed by Collar and Fields, who claimed to find a large excess of signal-like events in our data. We confirm the strong preference for a signal hypothesis in their analysis under these assumptions, but excesses are observed in both single- and multiple-scatter events, which implies the signal is not caused by WIMPs, but rather reflects the inadequacy of their background model
