    Ultrastructural Aspects of Unilateral Interspecific Incompatibility between Lycopersicum Peruvianum and L. Esculentum

    SUMMARYObservations have been made, at the electron microscope, of the pollen tubes present in the styles of Lycopersicum esculentum and L. peruvianum after reciprocal crosses between the two species.The unilateral incompatibility barrier which isolates the two species when L. peruvianum is used as pistillate parent was then compared to the processes of pollen tube rejection which have been recently analysed (J. Cell Sci., 1972) after self-pollination in this self-incompatible species. Such a comparison, which was also carried out by means of fluorescence techniques, has permitted to find out that for both types of incompatibility the rejection process was characterised by a progressive disappearance of the callose-rich inner wall of the pollen tube and by an accumulation of bi-partite particles in the tube cytoplasm.In the case of unilateral incompatibility, however, the tube outer wall is gradually disaggregated while the callosic inner wall remains quite thick at the tube apex, becoming thinner and fin..

    An extracellular transglutaminase is required for apple pollen tube growth

    An extracellular form of the calcium-dependent protein-crosslinking enzyme TGase (transglutaminase) was demonstrated to be involved in the apical growth of Malus domestica pollen tube. Apple pollen TGase and its substrates were co-localized within aggregates on the pollen tube surface, as determined by indirect immunofluorescence staining and the in situ cross-linking of fluorescently labelled substrates. TGase-specific inhibitors and an anti-TGase monoclonal antibody blocked pollen tube growth, whereas incorporation of a recombinant fluorescent mammalian TGase substrate (histidine-tagged green fluorescent protein:His6– Xpr–GFP) into the growing tube wall enhanced tube length and germination, consistent with a role of TGase as a modulator of cell wall building and strengthening. The secreted pollen TGase catalysed the cross-linking of both PAs (polyamines) into proteins (released by the pollen tube) and His6-Xpr-GFP into endogenous or exogenously added substrates. A similar distribution of TGase activitywas observed in planta on pollen tubes germinating inside the style, consistent with a possible additional role for TGase in the interaction between the pollen tube and the style during fertilization

    Theoretical Study on Transport Properties of Normal Metal - Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbon - Normal Metal Junctions

    We investigate transport properties of the junctions in which the graphene nanoribbon with the zigzag shaped edges consisting of the NN legs is sandwiched by the two normal metals by means of recursive Green's function method. The conductance and the transmission probabilities are found to have the remarkable properties depending on the parity of NN. The singular behaviors close to E=0 with EE being the Fermi energy are demonstrated. The channel filtering is shown to occur in the case with N=N= even.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Conductance of graphene nanoribbon junctions and the tight binding model

    Planar carbon-based electronic devices, including metal/semiconductor junctions, transistors and interconnects, can now be formed from patterned sheets of graphene. Most simulations of charge transport within graphene-based electronic devices assume an energy band structure based on a nearest-neighbour tight binding analysis. In this paper, the energy band structure and conductance of graphene nanoribbons and metal/semiconductor junctions are obtained using a third nearest-neighbour tight binding analysis in conjunction with an efficient nonequilibrium Green’s function formalism. We find significant differences in both the energy band structure and conductance obtained with the two approximations

    A business model for the establishment of the European Grid Infrastructure

    Abstract. An international grid has been built in Europe during the past years in the framework of various EC-funded projects to support the growth of e-Science. After several years of work spent to increase the scale of the infrastructure, to expand the user community and improve the availability of the services delivered, effort is now concentrating on the creation of a new organizational model, capable of fulfilling the vision of a sustainable European grid infrastructure. The European Grid Initiative (EGI) is the proposed framework to seamlessly link at a global level the European national grid e-Infrastructures operated by the National Grid Initiatives and European International Research Organizations, and based on a European Unified Middleware Distribution, which will be the result of a joint effort of various European grid Middleware Consortia. This paper describes the requirements that EGI addresses, the actors contributing to its foundation, the offering and the organizational structure that constitute the EGI business model

    Observation of the moon shadow using a new reconstruction technique in the CLUE experiment

    The CLUE experiment, located in La Palma island at 2200 m a.s.l., is an array of 3×3 telescope, detecting the UV (190–230 nm) ˇCerenkov light produced by atmospheric showers. Due to the higher atmospheric absorption in the UV range than in the visible one, CLUE cannot apply existing algorithms normally used in IACT experiments to determine primary cosmic ray direction. In this paper we present a new method developed by CLUE. The algorithm performances were evaluated using simulated showers. CLUE experiment collected data in the last two years pointing to AGN sources and to Moon. The preliminary results obtained using the new technique on Crab Nebula and on Markarian 421 were presented in a previous paper. Here, we present the preliminary observation of Moon Shadow employing the new method. As described in the paper, we expect in a near future improvements on AGN sources and on Moon Shadow measurement
