    Investigation of Spatial and Temporal Aspects of Airborne Gamma Spectrometry: Final Report

    A study has been conducted which demonstrates the reproducibility of Airborne Gamma-ray Spectrometry (AGS) and the effects of changes in survey parameters, particularly line spacing. This has involved analysis of new data collected from estuarine salt marsh and upland areas in West Cumbria and SW Scotland during three phases of field work, in which over 150000 spectra were recorded with a 16 litre NaI(Tl) detector. The shapes and inventories of radiometric features have been examined. It has been shown that features with dimensions that are large relative to the survey line spacing are very well reproduced with all line spacings, whereas smaller features show more variability. The AGS technique has been applied to measuring changes in the radiation environment over a range of time scales from a few days to several years using data collected during this and previous surveys of the area. Changes due to sedimentation and erosion of salt marshes, and hydrological transportation of upland activity have been observed

    The paper investigates interpretations of propositional and first-order logic in which validity is defined in terms of partial indices; sometimes called possibilities but here understood as non-empty subsets of a set W of possible worlds. Truth at a set of worlds is understood to be truth at every world in the set. If all subsets of W are permitted the logic so determined is classical first-order predicate logic. Restricting allowable subsets and then imposing certain closure conditions provides a modelling for intuitionistic predicate logic. The same semantic interpretation rules are used in both logics for all the operators

    Effects of Magnetic Braking and Tidal Friction on Hot Jupiters

    Tidal friction is thought to be important in determining the long-term spin-orbit evolution of short-period extrasolar planetary systems. Using a simple model of the orbit-averaged effects of tidal friction Eggleton, Kiseleva & Hut (1998), we analyse the effects of the inclusion of stellar magnetic braking on the evolution of such systems. A phase-plane analysis of a simplified system of equations, including only the stellar tide together with a model of the braking torque proposed by Verbunt & Zwaan (1981), is presented. The inclusion of stellar magnetic braking is found to be extremely important in determining the secular evolution of such systems, and its neglect results in a very different orbital history. We then show the results of numerical integrations of the full tidal evolution equations, using the misaligned spin and orbit of the XO-3 system as an example, to study the accuracy of simple timescale estimates of tidal evolution. We find that it is essential to consider coupled evolution of the orbit and the stellar spin in order to model the behaviour accurately. In addition, we find that for typical Hot Jupiters the stellar spin-orbit alignment timescale is of the same order as the inspiral time, which tells us that if a planet is observed to be aligned, then it probably formed coplanar. This reinforces the importance of Rossiter-McLaughlin effect observations in determining the degree of spin-orbit alignment in transiting systems.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to appear in IAU 259 Conference Proceeding

    The Role of Organisational Culture in the Merger of English Local Authorities into a Single Unitary Authority

A questionnaire survey based on specific ‘dimensions’ of organisational culture was circulated to staff prior to the merger date. Overall, the results indicated a generally congruent culture characterised by a strong team spirit and commitment to the workplace. A number of differences were observed between the cultural orientations of the seven councils, but there was only weak evidence of differences between tiers of management or professional groupings. The study suggests that the new organisation will have to find ways of ‘unfreezing’ staff from their established ways of thinking and working before changes can be properly embedded. It is recommended that the organisational change process shifts from a top-down ‘planned’ approach to a more ‘emergent’ approach to facilitate learning and organisational development

    Cosmic microwave background multipole alignments in slab topologies

    Several analyses of the microwave sky maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) have drawn attention to alignments amongst the low-order multipoles. Amongst the various possible explanations, an effect of cosmic topology has been invoked by several authors. We focus on an alignment of the first four multipoles (\ell = 2 to 5) found by Land and Magueijo (2005), and investigate the distribution of their alignment statistic for a set of simulated cosmic microwave background maps for cosmologies with slab-like topology. We find that this topology does offer a modest increase in the probability of the observed value, but that even for the smallest topology considered the probability of the observed value remains below one percent.Comment: 6 pages RevTex with 6 figures included.     Dose rate conversion parameters: assessment of nuclear data

    The dating of materials using stored dose methods requires accurate determination of the environmental dose rate. The calculation of dose rates from radionuclide concentrations requires conversion parameters derived from nuclear data (half life, decay energies and intensities, and branching ratios). With the substantial body of primary data, it is convenient to use data from evaluated libraries. These libraries show variations reflecting both newer data unavailable to earlier evaluations and the relative importance given to different data sets by the evaluators. Commonly used conversion parameters derive from the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF), either directly or from secondary publications, with new tabulations produced in recent years following revisions to this library. Other international evaluations of nuclear data include the NEA/OECD supported JEF2.2 and JEFF3.11 evaluations, and the Decay Data Evaluation Project (DDEP). A technique comparing different evaluations to identify data that can not be confidently used has been developed. These differences have been investigated with an evaluation of underlying nuclear data. Particular radionuclides of interest are discussed; 214Bi where recent evaluations depend on a single high precision data set, 228Ac where the decay scheme is incomplete and further measurements are required, and 40K where the mean beta energy has been calculated in the evaluations using an incorrect shape factor. Revised dose rate conversion factors have been produced, which are largely consistent with earlier values with the exception of the 40K beta parameter which is 4% higher than recent values but consistent with earlier calculations

    Fertility control as a means of controlling bovine tuberculosis in badger (Meles meles) populations in south-west England: predictions from a spatial stochastic simulation model

    A spatial stochastic simulation model was used to assess the potential of fertility control, based on a yet-to-be-developed oral bait-delivered contraceptive directed at females, for the control of bovine tuberculosis in badger populations in south-west England. The contraceptive had a lifelong effect so that females rendered sterile in any particular year remained so for the rest of their lives. The efficacy of fertility control alone repeated annually for varying periods of time was compared with a single culling operation and integrated control involving an initial single cull followed by annually repeated fertility control. With fertility control alone, in no instance was the disease eradicated completely while a viable badger population (mean group size of at least one individual) was still maintained. Near eradication of the disease (less than 1% prevalence) combined with the survival of a minimum viable badger population was only achieved under a very limited set of conditions, either with high efficiency of control (95%) over a short time period (1-3 years) or a low efficiency of control (20%) over an intermediate time period (10-20 years). Under these conditions, it took more than 20 years for the disease to decline to such low levels. A single cull of 80% efficiency succeeded in near eradication of the disease (below 1% prevalence) after a period of 6-8 years, while still maintaining a viable badger population. Integrated strategies reduced disease prevalence more rapidly and to lower levels than culling alone, although the mean badger group size following the onset of control was smaller. Under certain integrated strategies, principally where a high initial cull (80%) was followed by fertility control over a short (1-3 year) time period, the disease could be completely eradicated while a viable badger population was maintained. However, even under the most favourable conditions of integrated control, it took on average more than 12 years following the onset of control for the disease to disappear completely from the badger population. These results show that whilst fertility control would not be a successful strategy for the control of bovine tuberculosis in badgers if used alone, it could be effective if used with culling as part of an integrated strategy. This type of integrated strategy is likely to be more effective in terms of disease eradication than a strategy employing culling alone. However, the high cost of developing a suitable fertility control agent, combined with the welfare and conservation implications, are significant factors which should be taken into account when considering its possible use as a means of controlling bovine tuberculosis in badger populations in the UK
