The Real Estate and Stock Market During the Great Depression: Construction Permit Growth as a Leading Economic Indicator for Stock Returns

The 1929 stock market crash on Black Thursday, followed by the subsequent four-year period of extreme economic downturn, signifies an extremely profound piece of U.S. history. During this time, global economic productivity – measured by GDP – decreased while the U.S. unemployment rate increased staggeringly. Leveraging construction permits as a forward-looking measure of economic activity, I empirically evaluate the effect of construction permits – specifically, the lagged growth rate of monthly construction permits – and lagged monthly stock returns on monthly Standard & Poor\u27s 500 (S&P 500) stock returns. Lagged construction permit returns and lagged stock returns provide early indications (i.e., stock returns) of the following Great Depression

Anesthesia-to-Post Anesthesia Care Unit Handoff Standardization

Abstract The exchange of medical information from one medical professional to another is known as the handoff. Communication errors during the transition period of handoffs can lead to medication errors, delays in care, high stress within the work environment, and increased burnout of the nursing staff. Approximately 1,744 deaths and a total of $1.7 billion in malpractice costs were related to healthcare communication failures from 2012 to 2017. One of the areas of the hospital where effective handoffs are critically important, given the high frequency, is in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Major organizations such as the Joint Commission, the World Health Organization, and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists have created goals to standardize PACU handoffs in efforts to address the problem. PACU handoff standardization has also been voiced as a priority for the project organization. The purpose of this evidence-based quality improvement project is to implement a standardized handoff tool at the project organization site. After searching for and critically appraising the literature, the project team will implement the Written Anesthesia Handoff Tool (WHAT). This project’s development, implementation, and evaluation will be guided by a framework called the Evidence-Based Practice Improvement Model. The aim of the project is increasing nurse satisfaction with the utilization of a handoff tool. The goals of the project are to implement a checklist as a handoff tool to evaluate nurse satisfaction before and after the handoff tool is implemented. An Analysis of the Academic Environment in Business and Professional Communication

    Get PDF
While previous research in business communication has surveyed business and professional communication instructors regarding their courses, it has not yet asked instructors about additional factors that affect their ability to teach and their students’ ability to learn. These factors include job satisfaction, institutional and collegial support, academic rank, physical teaching environment, teaching and learning resources, and student issues. This study examines the results of a survey of business and professional communication instructors regarding these factors, discusses implications for the disciplines of business and professional communication, and suggests additional avenues for advocacy and research

These initiatives were mainly driven by the potential economic, environmental and technical benefits of these HVDC interconnections. In previous studies on these projects, some technical aspects of critical importance have not been addressed or studied in sufficient detail. One of these key aspects relates to the impact and possible benefit of these HVDC links on the dynamic performance of the European system which is the major focus of this paper. Several issues relating to the dynamic performance of the system are addressed here. Based on the experience gained from existing AC/DC projects around the world, this paper shows that the HVDC links between North Africa and Europe can greatly improve the dynamic performance of the European system especially in the southern regions. In addition, some challenges on the operation and control of these HVDC links are highlighted and solutions to overcome these challenges are proposed. This review paper, therefore, serves as a preliminary study for further detailed investigation of specific impacts or benefits of these interconnections on the overall performance of the European system.Peer reviewe

Author's name misspelled on title pageTypescriptM.A. University of Missouri 1913In this age of corporate business activity, a study of the legal and social relations which this form of business enterprise has borne to this State becomes of immediate interest. Such a study is of concern because the problem is in the process of solution. Moreover the study reveals striking similarities in methods and in results with those attained by adjoining commonwealths. These similarities have been induced by the existence of almost identical economic conditions and by the practice of imitative adaptation. The one form of corporate business with which this paper deals is the methods of railroad regulation in Missouri. The railroad corporation was the first of a class of public utility corporation was the first of a class of public utility corporations to demands serious treatment. In its importance to the general public, it still retains first rank. Technological changes and inventions have produced other public services they perform, are affected with a public interest.Includes bibliographical reference
