Free-stream noise and transition measurements on a cone in a Mach 3.5 pilot low-disturbance tunnel
A small scale Mach 3.5 wind tunnel incorporating certain novel design features and intended for boundary-layer-transition research has been tested. The free stream noise intensities and spectral distributions were determined throughout the test section for several values of unit Reynolds number and for nozzle boundary layer bleed on and off. The boundary layer transition location on a slender cone and the response of this to changes in the noise environment were determined. Root mean square free stream noise levels ranged from less than one tenth up to values approaching those for conventional nozzles, with the lowest values prevailing at upstream locations within the nozzle. For low noise conditions, cone transition Reynolds numbers were in the range of those for free flight; whereas for high noise conditions, they were in the range of those in conventional tunnels
Outbreak of tropical rat mite (Ornithonyssus bacoti) dermatitis in a home for disabled persons
Five mentally handicapped individuals living in a home for disabled persons in Southern Germany were seen in our outpatient department with pruritic, red papules predominantly located in groups on the upper extremities, neck, upper trunk and face. Over several weeks 40 inhabitants and 5 caretakers were affected by the same rash. Inspection of their home and the sheds nearby disclosed infestation with rat populations and mites. Finally the diagnosis of tropical rat mite dermatitis was made by the identification of the arthropod Ornithonyssus bacoti or so-called tropical rat mite. The patients were treated with topical corticosteroids and antihistamines. After elimination of the rats and disinfection of the rooms by a professional exterminator no new cases of rat mite dermatitis occurred. The tropical rat mite is an external parasite occurring on rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters and various other small mammals. When the principal animal host is not available, human beings can become the victim of mite infestation. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Base
Confirmation of low genetic diversity and multiple breeding females in a social group of Eurasian badgers from microsatellite and field data
The Eurasian badger (
Meles meles
) is a facultatively social carnivore that shows only rudimentary
co-operative behaviour and a poorly defined social hierarchy. Behavioural evidence
and limited genetic data have suggested that more than one female may breed in a
social group. We combine pregnancy detection by ultrasound and microsatellite locus
scores from a well-studied badger population from Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire, UK, to
demonstrate that multiple females reproduce within a social group. We found that at least
three of seven potential mothers reproduced in a group that contained 11 reproductive age
females and nine offspring. Twelve primers showed variability across the species range and only five of these were variable in Wytham. The microsatellites showed a reduced repeat number, a significantly higher number of nonperfect repeats, and moderate heterozygosity
levels in Wytham. The high frequency of imperfect repeats and demographic phenomena might be responsible for the reduced levels of variability observed in the badger
The effect of thermophoresis on the discharge parameters in complex plasma experiments
Thermophoresis is a tool often applied in complex plasma experiments. One of
the usual stated benefits over other experimental tools is that changes induced
by thermophoresis neither directly depend on, nor directly influence, the
plasma parameters. From electronic data, plasma emission profiles in the
sheath, and Langmuir probe data in the plasma bulk, we conclude that this
assumption does not hold. An important effect on the levitation of dust
particles in argon plasma is observed as well. The reason behind the changes in
plasma parameters seems to be the change in neutral atom density accompanying
the increased gas temperature while running at constant pressure.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
A cross-sectional study of peripartum blood transfusion in the Eastern Cape, South Africa
Background. Obstetric haemorrhage (OH) remains a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. Blood transfusion is critical in OH management; yet, data on peripartum transfusion are lacking. A pilot study reported high rates of peripartum transfusion in a sample of South African (SA) hospitals, which was independently associated with HIV status.Objectives. To assess the incidence of peripartum transfusion in a sample of Eastern Cape, SA hospitals to evaluate generalisability of preceding study findings.Methods. Hospital chart reviews were conducted of all deliveries at three large regional hospitals from February to June 2013. Additional clinical data were collected for patients who sustained OH and/or were transfused.Results. A total of 7 234 women were enrolled in the study; 1 988 (27.5%) were HIV-positive. Of the 767 HIV-positive women with a CD4 count <350 cells/μL, 86.0% were on full antiretroviral therapy and 9.9% received drugs for prevention of mother-to-child transmission. The overall transfusion rate was 3.2%, with significant variability by hospital: Frere Hospital (1.5%), Dora Nginza Hospital (3.8%) and Cecilia Makiwane Hospital (4.6%). The number of red blood cell units per transfused patient and per delivery varied significantly by hospital. Bivariate analysis showed significant association between transfusion and HIV status. In a multivariate analysis, controlling for OH, age, mode of delivery, gestational age, parity and birthweight, this association (odds ratio 1.45; 95% confidence interval 0.78 - 2.71) was no longer significant.Conclusion. These findings confirm high rates of peripartum transfusion in SA. While this can be possibly ascribed to variability in practice and patient profile, variation in care and improvement in HIV treatment should be considered
Genetic Synthesis of Periodic Protein Materials
Genetic engineering offers a novel approach to the development of
advanced polymeric materials, in particular protein-based materials.
Biological synthesis provides levels of control of polymer chain architecture
that cannot yet be attained by current methods of chemical synthesis. In
addition to employing naturally occurring genetic templates artificial genes
can be designed to encode completely new materials with customized properties.
In the present paper we: 1) review the concepts and technology of creating
protein-based materials by genetic engineering, 2) discuss the merits of
producing crystalline lamellar proteins by this approach, and 3) review
progress made by our group in generating such materials by genetic strategies.
Full descriptions appear elsewhere about the parameters to be considered in
designing artificial protein genes of this type, the effectiveness of
different gene construction and expression strategies utilized by us thus far
and, the specific properties of the various materials derived from these
efforts (1,2).
Progress made by other groups involved in developing periodic proteins by
molecular biological strategies are described in refs. 3-8. The latter
studies include genetic engineering of artificial silk-like proteins (3,4),
poly-aspartylphenylalanine (5), an α/β barrel domain (octarellin; 6), the
collagen tripeptide GlyProPro (7) and human tropoelastin (8). Advances with
the silk-like proteins (SLP) have been particularly impressive. In addition
to producing multi-gram quantities of pure SLP homopolymers, this group has successfully generated block copolymers of SLP interspersed with core peptides of mammalian elastin and the human fibronectin cell attachment element. While publications are still lacking it appears that a numiber of groups are striving to create genetically engineered variants of the repetitive bioadhesive proteins produced by mussels and barnacles (9)

Energy cost and return for hunting in African wild dogs and Cheetahs
African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) are reported to hunt with energetically costly long chase distances. We used high-resolution GPS and inertial technology to record 1,119 high-speed chases of all members of a pack of six adult African wild dogs in northern Botswana. Dogs performed multiple short, high-speed, mostly unsuccessful chases to capture prey, while cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) undertook even shorter, higher-speed hunts. We used an energy balance model to show that the energy return from group hunting and feeding substantially outweighs the cost of multiple short chases, which indicates that African wild dogs are more energetically robust than previously believed. Comparison with cheetah illustrates the trade-off between sheer athleticism and high individual kill rate characteristic of cheetahs, and the energetic robustness of frequent opportunistic group hunting and feeding by African wild dogs
Elk Contact Patterns and Potential Disease Transmission
Understanding the drivers of contact rates among individuals is critical to understanding disease dynamics and implementing targeted control measures. We studied the interaction patterns of 149 female elk (Cervus elaphus) distributed across five different regions of western Wyoming over three years, defining a contact as an approach within one body length (~2m). Using hierarchical models that account for correlations within individuals, pairs and groups, we found that pairwise contact rates within a group declined by a factor of three as group sizes increased 30-fold. Meanwhile, per capita contact rates increased with group size due to the increasing number of potential pairs. We found similar patterns for the duration of contacts. Supplemental feeding of elk had a limited impact on pairwise interaction rates and durations, but increased per capita rates more than two times higher. Variation in contact patterns were driven more by environmental factors such as group size than either individual or pairwise differences. Female elk in this region fall between the expectation of contact rates that linearly increase with group size (as assumed by pseudo-mass action models of disease transmission) or are constant with changes in group size (as assumed by frequency dependent transmission models). Our statistical approach decomposes the variation in contact rate into individual, dyadic, and environmental effects, which provides insight into those factors that are important for effective disease control programs
