    Feeling of / Feeling for Queer Community: The Social Activism of the San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

    This interdisciplinary article explores the queer social activism of the San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Based on over ten years of participant observation and archival research, I examine their rituals and public performances in order to illuminate the complex ways in which queer community is identified, felt, thought and lived out in response to social injustices rooted in religion. Using a theoretically informed lens, I alternate between academic and liturgical styles of writing to convey the feelings for, and feelings of, community that motivate and inspire the Sisters’ unique sacred clown aesthetic inspired by a desire to queer and challenged religious traditions and dogmas

    "Go Forth and Sin Some More!" A Performance Geography of the San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

    This thesis is a performance geography of the San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Founded in 1979, the Order is a group of queer nuns who take vows to “expiate stigmatic guilt, spread universal joy and commit to serve the community.” The Order now counts thirty-seven chapters around the world, each “house” reflecting the social and cultural context of its locale. The San Francisco house is considered the “mother house” of the Order and this thesis will focus solely on the mother house. The Order is recognizable for their whiteface makeup and distinctive wimples and veils. They employ the traditions of street theatre, clowning and drag to raise money for local community organisations and causes. Known for their pioneering work in the early 1980s on safer sex campaigns, the Sisters have been at the forefront of AIDS activism in San Francisco and continue to raise people’s consciousness about discrimination and homophobia. Performance geography is a way of mapping how performances give places meaning and how people make meaning through cultural performances, and the thesis explores several of the Sisters’ rituals and ceremonies in their geographic contexts. After an Introduction outlining the performance geography approach and a Chapter on the history, organisation and aesthetic styles of the Sisters, I describe the Sisters’ roles as nuns, clowns and activists—Chapters 3, 4, and 5 take up each of these roles specifically. Each chapter manouevres between a performance-based autoethnographic “voice” to evoke my experiences as an observer/audience member at several of these performances and an academic “voice.” Performances are analysed through the lenses of queer studies, performance, and cultural geography in order to provide an interpretation that: 1.) maps the spaces of queer community in San Francisco through the performances of the Sisters; 2.) sheds light on the constitution of “community” in these performances; and 3.) critically analyses the intersubjective relationship between the Sisters and those who attend their performances. In the Conclusion, I discuss how queer performance geography contributes to the analysis of cultural practices, point to its limits and address ways in which this approach can be applied to the study of cultural performances in other social dramas

    Pharmacovigilance in hospice/palliative care: net effect of haloperidol for nausea or vomiting

    Background: Haloperidol is widely prescribed as an antiemetic in patients receiving palliative care, but there is limited evidence to support and refine its use. Objective: To explore the immediate and short-term net clinical effects of haloperidol when treating nausea and/or vomiting in palliative care patients. Design: A prospective, multicenter, consecutive case series. Setting/Subjects: Twenty-two sites, five countries: consultative, ambulatory, and inpatient services. Measurements: When haloperidol was started in routine care as an antiemetic, data were collected at three time points: baseline; 48 hours (benefits); day seven (harms). Clinical effects were assessed using the National Cancer Institute's Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI CTCAE). Results: Data were collected (May 2014–March 2016) from 150 patients: 61% male; 86% with cancer; mean age 72 (standard deviation 11) years and median Australian-modified Karnofsky Performance Scale 50 (range 10–90). At baseline, nausea was moderate (88; 62%) or severe (11; 8%); 145 patients reported vomiting, with a baseline NCI CTCAE vomiting score of 1.0. The median (range) dose of haloperidol was 1.5 mg/24 hours (0.5–5 mg/24 hours) given orally or parenterally. Five patients (3%) died before further data collection. At 48 hours, 114 patients (79%) had complete resolution of their nausea and vomiting, with greater benefit seen in the resolution of nausea than vomiting. At day seven, 37 (26%) patients had a total of 62 mild/moderate harms including constipation 25 (40%); dry mouth 13 (21%); and somnolence 12 (19%). Conclusions: Haloperidol as an antiemetic provided rapid net clinical benefit with low-grade, short-term harms

CMB-S4 will dramatically advance cosmological studies by crossing critical thresholds in the search for the B-mode polarization signature of primordial gravitational waves, in the determination of the number and masses of the neutrinos, in the search for evidence of new light relics, in constraining the nature of dark energy, and in testing general relativity on large scales

    FUSE Observations of Molecular Hydrogen in Translucent Interstellar Clouds: II. The Line of Sight Toward HD 110432

    We report the second study from the FUSE survey of molecular hydrogen in translucent clouds, for the line of sight toward HD 110432. This star lies beyond the Coalsack dark nebula, and with E(B-V) = 0.40, and A_V = 1.32 this line of sight bridges the gap between less extinguished diffuse cloud lines of sight with A_V \sim 1, such as Zeta Oph, and the translucent clouds with A_V \gtrsim 2 such as HD 73882. Through profile fitting and a curve-of-growth analysis, we have derived rotational populations for H2 for J = 0--7. The line of sight has a total molecular hydrogen column density, log N(H2) = 20.68 \pm 0.05 cm^{-2}, nearly identical to that toward Zeta Oph, but a factor of three less than HD 73882. The ratio of N(J=1) to N(J=0) yields a kinetic temperature T_{kin} = 63 \pm 7 K, similar to other lines of sight with A_V \gtrsim 1. The high-J lines show considerable excitation above this temperature. The high-J excitation is similar to that toward Zeta Oph, but much smaller than that toward HD 73882. Chemical modeling indicates that the physical conditions in the cloud(s) are very similar to those in the cloud(s) toward Zeta Oph. An analysis of IUE spectra of the Lyman-alpha line gives log N(H I) = 20.85 \pm 0.15 cm^{-2}. Combined with N(H2), we derive a hydrogen molecular fraction, f_{H2} = 0.58 pm 0.12, statistically identical to that found for the lines of sight toward Zeta Oph and HD 73882. We also report column densities for the HD and CO molecules. From the combined measurements of hydrogen and carbon- containing molecules, the line of sight toward HD 110432 appears quite similar to the diffuse cloud line of sight toward Zeta Oph, and quite dissimilar to the translucent cloud line of sight toward HD 73882.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Introductory programming: a systematic literature review

    As computing becomes a mainstream discipline embedded in the school curriculum and acts as an enabler for an increasing range of academic disciplines in higher education, the literature on introductory programming is growing. Although there have been several reviews that focus on specific aspects of introductory programming, there has been no broad overview of the literature exploring recent trends across the breadth of introductory programming. This paper is the report of an ITiCSE working group that conducted a systematic review in order to gain an overview of the introductory programming literature. Partitioning the literature into papers addressing the student, teaching, the curriculum, and assessment, we explore trends, highlight advances in knowledge over the past 15 years, and indicate possible directions for future research

    Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors for febrile neutropenia prophylaxis following chemotherapy: systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Febrile neutropenia (FN) occurs following myelosuppressive chemotherapy and is associated with morbidity, mortality, costs, and chemotherapy reductions and delays. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs) stimulate neutrophil production and may reduce FN incidence when given prophylactically following chemotherapy. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effectiveness of G-CSFs (pegfilgrastim, filgrastim or lenograstim) in reducing FN incidence in adults undergoing chemotherapy for solid tumours or lymphoma. G-CSFs were compared with no primary G-CSF prophylaxis and with one another. Nine databases were searched in December 2009. Meta-analysis used a random effects model due to heterogeneity. Results: Twenty studies compared primary G-CSF prophylaxis with no primary G-CSF prophylaxis: five studies of pegfilgrastim; ten of filgrastim; and five of lenograstim. All three G-CSFs significantly reduced FN incidence, with relative risks of 0.30 (95% CI: 0.14 to 0.65) for pegfilgrastim, 0.57 (95% CI: 0.48 to 0.69) for filgrastim, and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.44 to 0.88) for lenograstim. Overall, the relative risk of FN for any primary G-CSF prophylaxis versus no primary G-CSF prophylaxis was 0.51 (95% CI: 0.41 to 0.62). In terms of comparisons between different G-CSFs, five studies compared pegfilgrastim with filgrastim. FN incidence was significantly lower for pegfilgrastim than filgrastim, with a relative risk of 0.66 (95% CI: 0.44 to 0.98). Conclusions: Primary prophylaxis with G-CSFs significantly reduces FN incidence in adults undergoing chemotherapy for solid tumours or lymphoma. Pegfilgrastim reduces FN incidence to a significantly greater extent than filgrastim

    Computational and Serologic Analysis of Novel and Known Viruses in Species Human Adenovirus D in Which Serology and Genomics Do Not Correlate

    In November of 2007 a human adenovirus (HAdV) was isolated from a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) sample recovered from a biopsy of an AIDS patient who presented with fever, cough, tachycardia, and expiratory wheezes. To better understand the isolated virus, the genome was sequenced and analyzed using bioinformatic and phylogenomic analysis. The results suggest that this novel virus, which is provisionally named HAdV-D59, may have been created from multiple recombination events. Specifically, the penton, hexon, and fiber genes have high nucleotide identity to HAdV-D19C, HAdV-D25, and HAdV-D56, respectively. Serological results demonstrated that HAdV-D59 has a neutralization profile that is similar yet not identical to that of HAdV-D25. Furthermore, we observed a two-fold difference between the ability of HAdV-D15 and HAdV-D25 to be neutralized by reciprocal antiserum indicating that the two hexon proteins may be more similar in epitopic conformation than previously assumed. In contrast, hexon loops 1 and 2 of HAdV-D15 and HAdV-D25 share 79.13 and 92.56 percent nucleotide identity, respectively. These data suggest that serology and genomics do not always correlate
