    Incompressible Euler Equations and the Effect of Changes at a Distance

    Because pressure is determined globally for the incompressible Euler equations, a localized change to the initial velocity will have an immediate effect throughout space. For solutions to be physically meaningful, one would expect such effects to decrease with distance from the localized change, giving the solutions a type of stability. Indeed, this is the case for solutions having spatial decay, as can be easily shown. We consider the more difficult case of solutions lacking spatial decay, and show that such stability still holds, albeit in a somewhat weaker form.Comment: Revised statement of Theorem 1 to include a missing definitio

    La terapia con plasma-exchange (PEx) e stata utilizzata sin dagli anni Settanta per la cura di molteplici malattie, nella cui patogenesi fattori umorali si riteneva potessero giocare un ruolo di rilievo. Questa modalita di trattamento comporta la rimozione di autoanticorpi, immunocomplessi circolanti, molecole di adesione, citochine, chemochine ed altri mediatori solubili implicati nello sviluppo del danno tissutale (1).     Vanishing viscosity in the plane for vorticity in borderline spaces of Besov type

    AbstractThe existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Euler equations for initial vorticity in BΓ∩Lp0∩Lp1 was proved by Misha Vishik, where BΓ is a borderline Besov space parameterized by the function Γ and 1<p0<2<p1. Vishik established short time existence and uniqueness when Γ(n)=O(logn) and global existence and uniqueness when Γ(n)=O(log12n). For initial vorticity in BΓ∩L2, we establish the vanishing viscosity limit in L2(R2) of solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations to a solution of the Euler equations in the plane, convergence being uniform over short time when Γ(n)=O(logn) and uniform over any finite time when Γ(n)=O(logκn), 0⩽κ<1, and we give a bound on the rate of convergence. This allows us to extend the class of initial vorticities for which both global existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Euler equations can be established to include BΓ∩L2 when Γ(n)=O(logκn) for 0<κ<1

    Evaluation of right ventricular function performed by 3d-echocardiography in scleroderma patients

    The impairment of the right ventricle (RV) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is usually related to pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). New echocardiographic techniques, such as 3-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) and 2-dimensional speckle tracking (2DSTE), allow an accurate evaluation of the RV function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the RV function using 3DE and 2DSTE in SSc patients with no history of heart disease and no PAH. Forty-five SSc patients, 42 females and 3 males, 28 with limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) and 17 with diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc), were studied. Forty-three age- and gender-matched healthy subjects were enrolled as controls. All of them underwent a 3DE and 2DSTE ecocardiographic evaluation of the RV function. Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) and total pulmonary vascular resistance (tPVR) were also estimated by power doppler. RV echocardiographic parameters were compared in the different subsets of SSc patients. A statistical analysis was performed by t-test, ANOVA and multiple logistic regression. RV areas in 2DSTE and volumes in 3DE were higher and RV function parameters were reduced in SSc patients compared with controls. Also sPAP and tVPR were higher, but they did not reach pathological values. Echocardiographic alterations were more pronounced in patients with lcSSc. 3DE and 2DSTE echocardiography allowed us to detect morphological and functional alterations of the RV in a group of SSc patients with no clinical signs of heart disease and no PAH. These patients had significantly higher sPAP and tPVR than healthy controls without reporting values compatible with PAH. These data suggest that RV alterations are related to a pressure overload rather than to an intrinsic myocardial involvement in SSc

    Flow cytometry for feline lymphoma : a retrospective study regarding pre-analytical factors possibly affecting the quality of samples

    Objectives: Flow cytometry (FC) is becoming increasingly popular among veterinary oncologists for the diagnosis of lymphoma or leukaemia. It is accurate, fast and minimally invasive. Several studies of FC have been carried out in canine oncology and applied with great results, whereas there is limited knowledge and use of this technique in feline patients. This is mainly owing to the high prevalence of intra-abdominal lymphomas in this species and the difficulty associated with the diagnostic procedures needed to collect the sample. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether any pre-analytical factor might affect the quality of suspected feline lymphoma samples for FC analysis. Methods: Ninety-seven consecutive samples of suspected feline lymphoma were retrospectively selected from the authors\u2019 institution\u2019s FC database. The referring veterinarians were contacted and interviewed about several different variables, including signalment, appearance of the lesion, features of the sampling procedure and the experience of veterinarians performing the sampling. Statistical analyses were performed to assess the possible influence of these variables on the cellularity of the samples and the likelihood of it being finally processed for FC. Results: Sample cellularity is a major factor in the likelihood of the sample being processed. Moreover, sample cellularity was significantly influenced by the needle size, with 21 G needles providing the highest cellularity. Notably, the sample cellularity and the likelihood of being processed did not vary between peripheral and intra-abdominal lesions. Approximately half of the cats required pharmacological restraint. Side effects were reported in one case only (transient swelling after peripheral lymph node sampling). Conclusions and relevance: FC can be safely applied to cases of suspected feline lymphomas, including intra-abdominal lesions. A 21 G needle should be preferred for sampling. This study provides the basis for the increased use of this minimally invasive, fast and cost-effective technique in feline medicine

    A Catalytic Reactor for the Organocatalyzed Enantioselective Continuous Flow Alkylation of Aldehydes

    The use of immobilized metal-free catalysts offers the unique possibility to develop sustainable processes in flow mode. The challenging intermolecular organocatalyzed enantioselective alkylation of aldehydes was performed for the first time under continuous flow conditions. By using a packed-bed reactor filled with readily available supported enantiopure imidazolidinone, different aldehydes were treated with three distinct cationic electrophiles. In the organocatalyzed α-alkylation of aldehydes with 1,3-benzodithiolylium tetrafluoroborate, excellent enantioselectivities, in some cases even better than those obtained in the flask process (up to 95 % ee at 25 °C), and high productivity (more than 3800 h−1) were obtained, which thus shows that a catalytic reactor may continuously produce enantiomerically enriched compounds.
