    Pressure-Induced Insulating State in Ba1-xRExIrO3 (RE = Gd, Eu) Single Crystals

    BaIrO3 is a novel insulator with coexistent weak ferromagnetism, charge and spin density wave. Dilute RE doping for Ba induces a metallic state, whereas application of modest pressure readily restores an insulating state characterized by a three-order-of-magnitude increase of resistivity. Since pressure generally increases orbital overlap and broadens energy bands, a pressure-induced insulating state is not commonplace. The profoundly dissimilar responses of the ground state to light doping and low hydrostatic pressures signal an unusual, delicate interplay between structural and electronic degrees of freedom in BaIrO3

    The motivation to express prejudice

    Contemporary prejudice research focuses primarily on people who are motivated to respond without prejudice and the ways in which unintentional bias can cause these people to act inconsistent with this motivation. However, some real-world phenomena (e.g., hate speech, hate crimes) and experimental findings (e.g., Plant & Devine, 2001; 2009) suggest that some expressions of prejudice are intentional. These phenomena and findings are difficult to explain solely from the motivations to respond without prejudice. We argue that some people are motivated to express prejudice, and we develop the motivation to express prejudice (MP) scale to measure this motivation. In seven studies involving more than 6,000 participants, we demonstrate that, across scale versions targeted at Black people and gay men, the MP scale has good reliability and convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity. In normative climates that prohibit prejudice, the internal and external motivations to express prejudice are functionally non-independent, but they become more independent when normative climates permit more prejudice toward a target group. People high in the motivation to express prejudice are relatively likely to resist pressure to support programs promoting intergroup contact and vote for political candidates who support oppressive policies. The motivation to express prejudice predicted these outcomes even when controlling for attitudes and the motivations to respond without prejudice. This work encourages contemporary prejudice researchers to broaden the range of samples, target groups, and phenomena that they study, and more generally to consider the intentional aspects of negative intergroup behavior

    World in Motion (2014) Museum of Ordure proposes a programme of films entitled: WORLD IN MOTION Films from the Collection of the Museum of Ordure Taking the framework of the Aarhus Rapport 1961-1969 as a springboard to examine the modernist avantgarde, the Museum of Ordure’s contribution to the exhibition Systemics #4. Aarhus Rapport 1969-2017: Avantgarde as Network (or, the Politics of the Ultralocal) is a series of films chosen from its collection of World Cinema which is expanded in time and narrative. The Collection emphasises shared content rather than authorship or nationality. The Aarhus Rapport was designed as an event which implies a transitional condition. Did it have a beginning and an end for example, or did it happen as a disclosure of converging interests without a conclusion? Was the event autonomous, did it have a political identity? Was there a grand design or did it appear as a set of independent speculations and in the process ‘naturalised’ itself? Provincialism is generally understood as a state of mind which is narrow in scope and is often seen in contrast to the universalism of the avant-garde. Political principle which applies to provincialism is localism which stands in opposition to great schemes and opposes centralisation. Does this contradict the revolutionary universalism of the avant-garde? These opposing philosophical and political questions have occupied generations and continue to do so which lie at the core of the debates surrounding the modernist avant-garde which see a community, group or nation as an ‘imagined community’ (Benedict Anderson). Imagined communities can be interpreted as a social construction, as in Edward Said’s ‘imagined geographies’. Drawing from films through time and narrative the Museum of Ordure is setting in motion these questions via the twin natural impulses of subject and content. All films are held in our distributed collection across peer-to-peer networks (the commons). In this way the Museum is also promoting commonism by questioning ownership, copyright and acts of piracy. Working on the edges of legality and transgressing the framework of capitalism has urgency as never before. The Museum is further posing the question of inertia – how is a human being to be lifted from an infused condition of helplessness prevailing our times. What kind of a ‘rhizomatic’ system (Gilles Deleuze & Felix Guattari) is possible with common principles of action, justice and equality? Here, the Museum of Ordure is proposing collectivity rather than individualism as a forward mechanism which enhances the inner life of a human being rather than oppressing it. Our bodies and consciousness have been subjugated since time immemorial, human beings have been dishonoured and wasted throughout time and history has been rendered incomprehensible. Can a network of the willing act as agents of unforgetting towards a new reality

    High precision hybrid RF and ultrasonic chirp-based ranging for low-power IoT nodes

    Hybrid acoustic-RF systems offer excellent ranging accuracy, yet they typically come at a power consumption that is too high to meet the energy constraints of mobile IoT nodes. We combine pulse compression and synchronized wake-ups to achieve a ranging solution that limits the active time of the nodes to 1 ms. Hence, an ultra low-power consumption of 9.015 µW for a single measurement is achieved. The operation time is estimated on 8.5 years on a CR2032 coin cell battery at a 1 Hz update rate, which is over 250 times larger than state-of-the-art RF-based positioning systems. Measurements based on a proof-of-concept hardware platform show median distance error values below 10 cm. Both simulations and measurements demonstrate that the accuracy is reduced at low signal-to-noise ratios and when reflections occur. We introduce three methods that enhance the distance measurements at a low extra processing power cost. Hence, we validate in realistic environments that the centimeter accuracy can be obtained within the energy budget of mobile devices and IoT nodes.     Mediation of Long Range Charge Transfer by Kondo Bound States

    We present a theory of non-equilibrium long range charge transfer between donor and acceptor centers in a model polymer mediated by magnetic exciton (Kondo) bound states. Our model produces electron tunneling lengths easily exceeding 10AËš\AA, as observed recently in DNA and organic charge transfer systems. This long ranged tunneling is effective for weak to intermediate donor-bridge coupling, and is enhanced both by weak to intermediate strength Coulomb hole-electron attraction (through the orthogonality catastrophe) and by coupling to local vibrational modes.Comment: Revised content (broadened scope, vibrations added), submitted to Phys Rev Lett, added autho

    This paper is a speculation on the relationship between coding and writing, and the ways in which technical innovations and capabilities enable us to rethink each in terms of the other. As a case study, we draw on recent experiences of preparing a book on live coding, which integrates a wide range of personal, historical, technical and critical perspectives. This book project has been both experimental and reflective, in a manner that allows us to draw on critical understanding of both code and writing, and point to the potential for new practices in the future

    A Molecular Einstein Ring: Imaging a Starburst Disk Surrounding a Quasi-Stellar Object

    Images of the CO 2-1 line emission, and the radio continuum emission, from the redshift 4.12 gravitationally lensed quasi-stellar object (QSO) PSS J2322+1944 reveal an Einstein ring with a diameter of 1.5". These observations are modeled as a star forming disk surrounding the QSO nucleus with a radius of 2 kpc. The implied massive star formation rate is 900 M_sun/year. At this rate a substantial fraction of the stars in a large elliptical galaxy could form on a dynamical time scale of 10^8 years. The observation of active star formation in the host galaxy of a high-redshift QSO supports the hypothesis of coeval formation of supermassive black holes and stars in spheroidal galaxies.Comment: 12 pages. to appear in Science, April 200

    High-Temperature Transport Properties of the Zintl Phases Yb_(11)GaSb_9 and Yb_(11)InSb_9

    Two rare-earth Zintl phases, Yb_(11)GaSb_9 and Yb_(11)InSb_9, were synthesized in high-temperature self-fluxes of molten Ga and In, respectively. Structures were characterized by both single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction and are consistent with the published orthorhombic structure, with the space group Iba2. High-temperature differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetry (TG) measurements reveal thermal stability to 1300 K. Seebeck coefficient and resistivity measurements to 1000 K are consistent with the hypothesis that Yb_(11)GaSb_9 and Yb_(11)InSb_9 are small band gap semiconductors or semimetals. Low doping levels lead to bipolar conduction at high temperature, preventing a detailed analysis of the transport properties. Thermal diffusivity measurements yield particularly low lattice thermal conductivity values, less than 0.6 W/m K for both compounds. The low lattice thermal conductivity suggests that Yb_(11)MSb_9 (M = Ga, In) has the potential for high thermoelectric efficiency at high temperature if charge-carrier doping can be controlled
