Background:Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is widely distributed worldwide and is endemic in developing countries. Travel-related HEV infection has been reported at national levels, but global data are missing. Moreover, the global availability of HEV diagnostic testing has not been explored so far. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiology of HEV infections in returning travellers and availability of HEV diagnostic testing in the GeoSentinel surveillance network. Methods:This was a multicentre retrospective cross-sectional study. All confirmed and probable HEV travel-related infections reported in the GeoSentinel Network between 1999 and 2018 were evaluated. GeoSentinel sites were asked to complete a survey in 2018 to assess the availability and accessibility of HEV diagnostic procedures (i.e. serology and molecular tests) throughout the study period. Results:Overall, 165 travel-related HEV infections were reported, mainly since 2010 (60%) and in tourists (50%). Travellers were exposed to hepatitis E in 27 countries; most travellers (62%) were exposed to HEV in South Asia. One patient was pregnant at the time of HEV infection and 14 had a concomitant gastrointestinal infection. No deaths were reported. In the 51% of patients with information available, there was no pre-travel consultation. Among 44 GeoSentinel sites that responded to the survey, 73% have access to HEV serology at a local level, while 55% could perform (at a local or central level) molecular diagnostics. Conclusion:Reported access to HEV diagnostic testing is suboptimal among sites that responded to the survey; this could negatively affect diagnosing HEV. Pre-travel consultations before travel to South Asia and other low-income and high-prevalence areas with a focus on food and water precautions could be helpful in preventing hepatitis E infection. Improved HEV diagnostic capacity should be implemented to prevent and correctly diagnose travel-related HEV infection.CC999999/ImCDC/Intramural CDC HHSUnited States/U50 CK000189/CK/NCEZID CDC HHSUnited States/2022-09-22T00:00:00Z32789467PMC949455311936vault:4330

Statistical implicative analysis for educational data sets: 2 analysis with RCHIC

ObjectiveTo assess the associations between operating room (OR) nursing, a category of health care workers at high risk of exposure to various inhaled agents, and asthma severity/control among women with asthma.MethodsThe level of severity/control in nurses with prevalent doctor-diagnosed asthma in 1998/2000 was compared, using nominal logistic regression, in OR nursing (n=69) and administrative nursing (n=546) from the US Nurses\ue2€™ Health Study for whom detailed information on asthma and nursing employment status was available.ResultsWe observed a significant association between OR nursing, compared to administrative nursing, and severe persistent asthma (adjusted odds ratio 2.48, 95%CI 1.06\ue2€“5.77).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that nurses working in the operating room are at a higher risk of severe persistent asthma. Further studies with detailed estimates of occupational exposures, especially to disinfectant/cleaning agents, are warranted.AI-52338/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/United StatesCA-87969/CA/NCI NIH HHS/United StatesHL-63841/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United StatesKLB9/Intramural CDC HHS/United StatesP01 CA087969/CA/NCI NIH HHS/United StatesR01 HL063841/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/United StatesR21 AI052338/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/United States2014-08-01T00:00:00Z23887704PMC374004

Digital Teaching: In Search Of An Effective Paperless Platform For Classroom Activities

Get PDF
Sydney J. Harris advises us, “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows”. Never like today, are we in the need to help teachers and professors to guide their students to open windows and get involved with the geopolitical and economic needs of the world. This paper tests the hypothesis that Microsoft OneNote Class Notebook (MONCN), used in undergraduate Finance courses as a tool for digital teaching, can both promote sustainable development and make the students become leaders, using this innovative tool of learning as part of their own activities and lives in the future. The test of the hypothesis also demonstrates that students manage to make the classroom time more effective and efficient for learning when using MONCN as a paperless technological platform. Thus, without impacting the effectiveness and quality of education, MONCN surges as a tool for inspiring the students to become committed citizens that can change the world and collaborate in the fight of climate change

Bolshevizing communist parties: The Algerian and South African experiences

Get PDF
In 1924 and 1925 the Comintern introduced its policy of Bolshevization. A goal of Bolshevization was the creation of mass-based communist parties. In settler societies this meant that the local communist party should aim to be demographically representative of the entire population. This article traces the efforts of the communist parties in Algeria and South Africa to indigenize, seeking to explain why their efforts had such diverse outcomes. It examines four variables: the patterns of working-class formation; the socialist tradition of each country; the relationship between the Comintern and the two communist parties; and the level of repression against communists in both societies. The cumulative weight of the variables in the Algerian case helps to explain why communist activity in the 1920s - including the communist party's ability to indigenize - was far more difficult in Algeria than South Africa

Optimization and Parallelization of a force field for silicon using OpenMP

The force field by Lenosky and coworkers is the latest force field for silicon which is one of the most studied materials. It has turned out to be highly accurate in a large range of test cases. The optimization and parallelization of this force field using OpenMp and Fortan90 is described here. The optimized program allows us to handle a very large number of silicon atoms in large scale simulations. Since all the parallelization is hidden in a single subroutine that returns the total energies and forces, this subroutine can be called from within a serial program in an user friendly way.Comment: The program can be obtained upon request from the author ([email protected]
