Re-inscribing a Monument: Vimy in the Canadian Consciousness

This essay focuses on the efficacy of Walter Allward’s immense Canadian National Vimy Memorial built at Vimy Ridge in France and unveiled in 1936. Like other battlefield memorials located far from their primary audiences, the Vimy Memorial must deliberately intervene into Canadian consciousness in order to remain relevant. Drawing on Pierre Nora’s notion of “successive presents,” I examine the means by which that intervention occurs over time and how, also exacerbated by the often great distance between monument and audience, the monument functions as a heterotopic space. The essay also addresses types of memory and consciousness – state, national, collective, and individual – and their inherent malleability, and the points at which they might become fused.Cet article s’intéresse à l’impact de l’immense monument de Walter Allward, construit à Vimy Ridge en France et inauguré en 1936. Comme d’autres monuments commémoratifs situés sur les champs de bataille très loin des publics pour lesquels ils sont principalement destinés, le monument de Vimy doit pourtant toucher directement la conscience des Canadiens afin de jouer son rôle. En m’appuyant sur la notion de « présents successifs » de Pierre Nora, j’examine la manière dont cela se produit dans le temps, et comment, en dépit de la grande distance entre le monument et son public, Vimy fonctionne comme un espace hétérotopique tel que le décrit Michel Foucault. The Green Legacy Project: Evaluating Campus Tree Benefits

Trees on our campus sequester and store carbon, mitigate urban heat island effects, ameliorate air pollution, reduce stormwater runoff, improve water quality, provide habitat for native birds and other animals, and enhance aesthetics. Adequate planning and management of this valuable resource first requires a sound understanding of existing conditions. To this end, a collaborative group of faculty, staff, and students at West Chester University initiated the Green Legacy Project. We conducted an inventory and assessment of north campus tree resources and developed a GIS management database. Approximately 1900 trees cover 16% of north campus, half of which are non-native species. The value of the trees is an estimated $3.2 million with annual benefits of$250,000

Search for Gamma-Ray and neutrino coincidences using HAWC and ANTARES data

In the quest for high-energy neutrino sources, the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON) has implemented a new search by combining data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory and the Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch (ANTARES) neutrino telescope. Using the same analysis strategy as in a previous detector combination of HAWC and IceCube data, we perform a search for coincidences in HAWC and ANTARES events that are below the threshold for sending public alerts in each individual detector. Data were collected between July 2015 and February 2020 with a livetime of 4.39 years. Over this time period, 3 coincident events with an estimated false-alarm rate of <1 coincidence per year were found. Philanthropy and Propaganda: The Bust of George III in Montréal

En 1765, deux ans seulement après l’instauration du régime civil britannique, un incendie rasait presque entièrement le quartier des affaires ainsi qu’une grande partie de la ville de Montréal. Quand on apprit la nouvelle à Londres, un certain Jonas Hanway, commerçant et philanthrope, organisa une souscription pour venir en aide à la ville sinistrée. Il envoya à Montréal deux voitures de pompiers, la somme de 8,415 livres sterling et un buste de Georges III. Le buste sculpté par Joseph Wilton, « Sculptor to the King », fut érigé sur la Place d’Armes en souvenir de la générosité britannique.Cet article explique pourquoi Hanway, un homme qui n’aurait jamais visité le Canada, ni aucune autre colonie britannique, ressentait le besoin de souligner la générosité britannique en érigeant un monument au roi. Cette étude examine, en outre, les relations entre Hanway et le groupe de marchands anglais établis à Montréal et ennemis jurés du lieutenant-général, James Murray. Reste à savoir si le buste fut envoyé à Montréal pour l’unique bénéfice des Canadiens comme Hanway le laissait entendre ou bien si la sculpture ne devait pas plutôt servir à rassurer les marchands de Montréal quant à leurs droits sous le lieutenant-gouverneur

How can continuing professional development better promote shared decision-making? : perspectives from an international collaboration

Background: Shared decision-making is not widely implemented in healthcare. We aimed to set a research agenda about promoting shared decision-making through continuing professional development. Methods: Thirty-six participants met for two days. Results: Participants suggested ways to improve an environmental scan that had inventoried 53 shared decisionmaking training programs from 14 countries. Their proposed research agenda included reaching an international consensus on shared decision-making competencies and creating a framework for accrediting continuing professional development initiatives in shared decision-making. Conclusions: Variability in shared decision-making training programs showcases the need for quality assurance frameworks

Le Canada et la Grande Guerre

Le numéro 80 de la Revue Etudes Canadiennes/Canadian Studies se divise en deux parties. Dans un premier temps, nous avons choisi de consacrer un numéro thématique au Canada dans la Grande Guerre. Nous avons sollicité des contributions qui faisaient appel à de nouvelles recherches ou à de nouvelles perspectives sur la Grande Guerre vue du Canada, ou sur la manière dont le Canada se souvient de cette guerre, particulièrement à l’approche de la commémoration de la bataille de Vimy en avril 1917. Dans une deuxième partie, nous publions quatre travaux de doctorants présentés lors de journées doctorales organisées par le Centre d’Etudes sur le Canada de l’université de Grenoble, en novembre 2015. Ces journées intitulées « le Canada, la mondialisation et votre thèse » ont montré la vitalité de la relève de la recherche en France sur le Canada
