Pico-hydro systems: microgrid-connection approaches
Small hydropower systems are considered an environmentally friendly energy option. They have a huge
untapped potential which allows them to make a more significant contribution to future energy demand with many advantages. The integration of pico-hydro systems into microgrids is an emerging solution for the electrification of remote areas and for self-sustainable power systems. This paper presents and discusses the three main grid connection approaches for pico-hydro systems focused on the integration in small microgrids: using specifically
designed power converters, using standard wind inverters and using standard photovoltaic inverters. These
latest approaches based on conventional inverters are able to explore a large amount of feasible sites with low-head
and very low-head. They improve efficiencies, reduce costs and environmental impacts and improve
reliability. Experimental evaluation of the performance in steady-state and in dynamic conditions proves the
feasibility of these innovative approaches.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Compatibility analysis of grid-connected pico-hydro systems using conventional photovoltaic inverters
Small scale hydropower has a considerable untapped potential, able to contribute to the increased energy
demand. The integration of these systems into microgrids is an emerging solution for the electrification
of remote areas and for self-sustainable power systems. This paper is devoted to the design optimization
of grid-connected pico-hydro systems using conventional photovoltaic inverters, providing cost
effective solutions able to explore a large amount of feasible sites. Experimental tests of the proposed
innovative topology with two inverters and selected generators were performed, evaluating the
performance in steady state and dynamic conditions, corroborate the proposed design procedure.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Analysis of the operation of a microgrid with renewable distributed generation
This article reports the ongoing research on the performance assessment of an experimental microgrid which integrates various renewable energy sources. The microgrid is based on a modular commercial solution, up to a rated power of 5 kW, integrating storage devices, a backup diesel generator and various renewable energy sources and also distributed energy sources developed under ongoing R&D projects, such as the integration of a pico hydropower plant with an interface able to perform power factor compensation of the microgrid, which is introduced briefly. The performance assessment of this microgrid is conducted through a characterization of different operational states and also a preliminary energy balance of the microgrid during a time span of 4 days. The authors would like to acknowledge the financial support provided by the European Regional Development Fund, under the Interreg Project 0128_PROBIOENER_2_E.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
metodologico, rigor matematico e cientifico, e;
O trabalho procura ainda evidenciar a pertinência do

Decrease in APP and CP mRNA expression in Alzheimer’s disease patients suggests impairment of cellular iron export in this dementia
aconitase (ACO1; P=0,007); ceruloplasmina (CP; P<0,001) e proteína precursora
A dysregulation of iron (Fe) metabolism in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has
been suggested previously. Herein, we intended to further clarify the
molecular mechanisms underlying Fe homeostasis in AD particularly
at the level of cellular iron efflux. Thus, the expression of specific Fe
metabolism-related genes directly involved in Fe regulation and export
was assessed by quantitative PCR in peripheral blood mononuclear cells
(PBMCs) from 73 AD patients and 74 controls. A significant decrease
in the expression of aconitase 1 (ACO1; P=0.007); ceruloplasmin (CP;
P<0.001) and amyloid peptide precursor (APP; P=0.006) genes was fund
in AD patients compared with healthy volunteers. These observations
point out to a significant downregulation of the expression of genes associated
with ferroportin-mediated cellular Fe export in PBMCs from
AD patients. The present findings support previous studies suggesting
impairment of Fe homeostasis in AD, which may lead to cellular Fe retention
and oxidative stress, a typical feature of this disease
Choice of common bean segregant populations using phenotypic information and QTL microsatellite markers
The objective of this work was to select promising common bean segregant populations for grain yield and polymorphic to microsatellite markers for grain yield QTL previously identified. Fourty nine lines were utilized and evaluated in two field trials in a triple lattice. Seven lines were selected and intercrossed in a diallel scheme and genotyped with 24 single sequence repeat (SSR) markers associated to grain yield QTL previously identified. Populations were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications. Significant differences in the general and specific combining ability were observed, and the non-additive effects were highest. The outstanding lines were RC1-10 and Z-9 due to the highest gi values. Twenty five percent of the markers were polymorphic. Four populations were chosen for selecting families based on the line evaluations, the diallel analysis and the polymorphism of SSR markers. Among the segregant populations, RC1-10 x Z-9 is remarkable for having high CEC, high grain yield of the Carioca type, and their parents expressed high CGC. Considering the low number of polymorphic microsatellite markers in each population, it is necessary to use higher number of microsatellite markers associated to grain yield QTL
Cyanogenic glycosides and graft compatibility of Asian pear grafted onto Pyrus calleryana and P. betulifolia
The objective of this work was to evaluate the levels of the cyanogenic glycosides amygdalin and prunasin in 13 Asian pear cultivars (Pyrus pyrifolia) grafted onto P. calleryana and P. betulifolia, as well as to verify their effects on graft compatibility. The experimental design was completely randomized with three replicates. The evaluated cultivars were: Ya li, Shinsui, Oku Sankichi, Hakucho, Nitaka, Shinseiki, Suisei, Choujuurou, Nijisseiki, Kousui, Housui, Kikusui, and Hakkou. The cyanogenic glycosides had no influence on graft compatibility and on the chlorophyll content of the combinations between cultivars and rootstocks. The concentration of cyanogenic glycosides is not an effective marker of graft incompatibility among the studied combinations
