This project has the aim to relate the application of the Regulamento de desempenho energético dos edifícios de habitação with the concept of Near zero energy building. The project begins making a comparison of the general methodology between both regulations in order to understand the theoretical alterations that are underlined during the adaptation process. In addition, a study about near zero energy buildings is made and various strategies capable of leading to the acquisition of this title in a residential building. Finally, it is made an application of the existing regulation to a real scenario and a study about the effect of the increase of the area glazed surface, taking into account their orientation, with the objective of energetic efficiency

The cultural, economic and politics aspects have influenced the worldwide accounting practices, creating different rules in different countries. With globalization, comparability is increasingly one of the main characteristics required by users of financial reporting, particularly by the financial markets which have assumed particular prominence in the global economy. In order to achieve the much desired comparability, the European Union started the process of harmonization accounting, publishing Regulation (EC) nº 1606/2002, which requires listed companies in their financial markets to adopt International Accounting Standards in the consolidated accounts. With this process were created the conditions for a normalisation in the format of disclosure of financial reporting. The development of new information and communication technologies offer came the emergence of languages that can, with advantage, be adapted to the preparation and dissemination of financial reporting. The language XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language), has advantages that help improve the relevance, reliability and comparability of financial information. However, past a decade after the start of its development, XBRL is not yet the standard language in financial reporting. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the gap mentioned for the XBRL language in the European Union and its representativeness in relation to other formats used in the disclosure of financial reporting

Media sharing in an open network of place-based displays

In this study, we aim to uncover emerging media practices for open place-based displays and understand how people appropriate the opportunities created by this new medium. Based on usage data from 43 displays, we study the role played by different publication paradigms, more specifically subscription of pre-defined content channels, integration of arbitrary content sources from social media and direct media creation. The results suggest that these different publication paradigms can all play an important role in an open model for public displays and that they complement each other in a very flexible way. This seems to confirm that openness can represent an important step towards more effective and more relevant uses of large screen displaysProject 11304 (16/SI/2015) , supported by Norte Portugal Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Situated web portal for local awareness and transient interaction

When used as part of a larger ubiquitous computing infrastructure, public displays have a great potential for enriching transitional spaces. They can enable brief encounters with information that is relevant for their specific situation, improving local awareness, promoting information sharing and enabling new and much engaging user experiences. The research presented in this paper introduces the concept of situated portal as being a web portal of situational relevant information, targeted for the public display and using large screens or wall projections,. In this paper we will briefly describe the architecture of our system, our initial prototype and our early results. Building in our experience of creating this system we then describe some of the main open issues that we plan to address in a multi-disciplinary research project

Public interactive displays in schools : involving teachers in the design and assessment of innovative technologies.

The introduction of an innovative technology in schools has the potential to change the education system, bringing major changes in the way teachers work, students learn challenging the way schools are managed. Informed by literature that sustains integration of technological innovations in educational contexts is influenced by instrumental factors such as school leadership and organizational structure (Dix, 2007) and using a development research approach, three hands-on workshops were conducted with a criterion sample of teachers of a secondary school from the north of Portugal in order to elicit expectations towards the use of digital displays to viewing videos, explore possible features for the system design as well as the management of the technological device in the school system. Development research methodology showed to produce usable findings that were born out of the collaborative partnership between researchers and stakeholders focused around inquiry that is of interest to educational leaders and teachers with the intention to inform and transform pedagogical practices. In sum, the development research approach allowed, for one hand, the conception of a new tool pedagogically adjusted to students learning needs as well as to the school organizational rules and structures. On the other hand, our methodological approach aimed to foster the acceptance of the tool as a useful pedagogical instrument for other teachers and for the whole school ecology.Comissão Europeia (FP7)CIEC - Centro de Investigação em Estudos da Criança, UM (UI 317 da FCT

Emerging media practices with the Displr platform for place-based engagement

    Get PDF
Place-based communication is about contextual messages delivered at specific locations where certain types of people congregate for particular purposes. A successful approach to place-based communication should explore the whole ecology of personal and public devices that characterises most public places. While social media and mobile are now mainstream and an integral part of communication strategies, place-based communication remains a complex and laborious undertaking that can only be accomplished with custom, expensive projects that are hard to understand, appropriate and sustain.Displr is a place-based communication platform that enables venues to reach their visitors more effectively by easily combining screen displays, social media and mobile engagement. Displr empowers any venue to create and manage a targeted, smart, cost-effective, interactive and cross-channel medium, without the need for external expertise or time consuming tasks. To understand some of the new possibilities and implications of place-based communication, we have conducted a study on publication practices in the Displr platform. Overall, these findings suggest that, with place-based displays, publication practices tend to be less formal and much more situated than what is now common in most display networks. This suggests that the possibility to appropriate the medium is highly valued and may prompt for more situated and spontaneous forms of communicationThis work is funded by project 11304 (16/SI/2015), supported by Norte Portugal Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Volcanic hazard vulnerability on Sao Miguel Island, Azores

    Get PDF
"In recent years much progress has been made in researching a wide variety of extreme events on S. Miguel. In addition there are a number of volcano-related risks which impact upon the people of S. Miguel. Some of these may occur both before and during volcanic emergencies (e.g. earthquakes), whilst others render S. Miguel dangerous even when its volcanoes are not erupting (e.g. flooding, landslides, tsunamis and health impacts, especially the effects of CO2 seepage into dwellings). In this chapter we first define what vulnerability means to the people of São Miguel, and relate this to the cultural and economic characteristics of the island. The following aspects of vulnerability are discussed: a. physical (i.e. housing, settlement and the characteristics of evacuation routes and plans); b. demographic and economic; c. social and cultural and perceptual (i.e. do people have an accurate cognition of risk). Particular areas of concern relate to housing; the identification of isolated dwellings which would be difficult to evacuate; the vulnerability/resilience of evacuation routes following recent infrastructure improvements; characteristics of the island's transient population; management of livestock under emergency conditions; local leadership roles and educational outreach.
