Há morte nas catacumbas?: um estudo sobre turismo negro

Mestrado em Gestão e Planeamento em TurismoNa sociedade contemporânea, em que a morte é simultaneamente presente e ausente do quotidiano dos indivíduos, é importante identificar as principais instituições que permitem o contacto entre o indivíduo e a morte e as relações que podem ser estabelecidas entre eles. O Turismo Negro, ou seja, a actividade turística em locais de ou associados a morte e sofrimento, é uma das mais importantes instituições mediadoras da morte. O Turismo Negro é um objecto de interesse recente entre a comunidade académica. Não obstante, tem vindo a ser abordado por alguns autores, e é um tipo de turismo com variadas manifestações por todo o mundo. A presente dissertação consiste num estudo exploratório, de carácter qualitativo, sobre o modo como os visitantes de uma atracção de Turismo Negro a representam enquanto local ligado à morte. Pretendemos por este meio perceber se a morte é retirada da experiência turística dos sujeitos, tanto de uma atracção específica como de outras que possam ter visitado. Ao mesmo tempo, procurámos conhecer a atitude dos sujeitos em relação ao Turismo Negro e ao seu papel como mediador da morte na sociedade contemporânea.In contemporary society, where death is simultaneously absent and present from our daily lives, it is important to identify both the main institutions that allow for the contact between individuals and death to take place, and the relationships that can be established between them. Dark Tourism, in other words, tourist activity in places of or associated with death and suffering, is one of the most important institutions that mediate death. Dark Tourism has only recently become an object of interest amongst academics. Nevertheless, there is some work produced on this matter, and Dark Tourism has many manifestations throughout the world. This dissertation consists of a qualitative exploratory study about the way visitors of a Dark Tourism attraction represent it as a place connected to death. Our aim was to understand if death is subtracted from the subjects’ tourist experience, both of a specific attraction and of others they may have visited. At the same time, we intended to know the subjects’ attitude towards Dark Tourism and its role as a mediator of death in contemporary society

This paper presents the doctoral dissertation project in Cultural Studies titled Tourism and Death: representation, mediation and language technologies, with emphasis on its framing within Cultural Studies and on the planned methodological approach. Poder, género e política: as mulheres na liderança da política cultural em Portugal

Power, as a discourse that circulates in the social fabric, defines the nature of gender relations andtheir political dynamics. In a power play in which the masculine dominates all symbolic aspects of  ocial life and the feminine isconnoted as the Other, women have created a space for resistance and are gaining political leadership. Based on this theoretical context,we conducted a data survey – and subsequent descriptive analysis – which presents the panorama of female leadership in the main political bodies of culture in Portugal.O poder, enquanto discurso que circula no tecido social, define a natureza das relações de género e sua dinâmica política. Há morte nas catacumbas? Perceções de visitantes de uma atração de turismo negro

Este artigo resume as principais conclusões de um estudo exploratório sobre as perceções dos visitantes de uma atração de turismo negro em Portugal. Partindo de uma reflexão teórica sobre o conceito de turismo negro e o seu papel na sociedade ocidental contemporânea, o estudo empírico desenvolvido teve entre os seus objetivos o de compreender o modo como os visitantes de uma atração turística relacionada com morte e sofrimento a representavam. Com recurso a entrevistas, submetidas a um processo de análise de conteúdo, foi possível identificar as características dos visitantes que podem ter influência nessa representação.This paper condenses the main findings of an exploratory study on the perceptions of visitors of a dark tourism attraction in Portugal. The empirical research that has been carried out was based on a theoretical reflection on the concept of dark tourism and its role as a mediator of death and suffering in contemporary Western society. The understanding of how visitors of an attraction related to death and suffering represent it was amongst the objectives of this research. By using interviews subjected to a process of content analysis, it was possible to identify visitors’ characteristics that may influence this representation.publishe

From Belém to Tarrafal: Dark Tourism as a vehicle for multiple (post) colonial narratives

No seguimento das iniciativas de aproveitamento turístico de atrações relacionadas com o período colonial e pós-colonial português, este artigo salienta a necessidade de veicular narrativas múltiplas sobre os acontecimentos e as circunstâncias que estiveram na origem dessas atrações. Assim, descreve-se o processo de passagem de uma narrativa única de Portugal como colonizador – onde se destaca o Lusotropicalismo – para a multiplicidade de narrativas que existem na atualidade, vindas de Portugal e dos países que foram colónias suas. De seguida, demonstra-se o potencial do turismo negro, em particular, das suas atrações, como meios privilegiados para a transmissão de mensagens múltiplas, já que cada atração é passível de várias interpretações. Por fim, conclui-se com a necessidade de tomar decisões consertadas entre os países da CPLP sobre as narrativas a veicular nas atrações e de realizar estudos de caso que aprofundem aspetos específicos de cada uma delas.After the initiatives to implement tourist activity in places related to the Portuguese colonial and post-colonial periods, this article emphasizes the need to serve multiple narratives of the events and circumstances that led to these places being tourist attractions. So, the article describes the process of going from a single narrative of Portugal as colonizer - Lusotropicalism - to the multiplicity of narratives that exist today, originating from Portugal and its former colonies. Afterwards, the article demonstrates the potential of dark tourism, particularly of its attractions, as privileged means for the transmission of multiple messages, as each attraction is open to several interpretations. Finally, it concludes with the need for the CPLP countries to make joint decisions about the narratives conveyed by the attractions and to undertake case studies focused on specific aspects of the attractions
