Advancing Hardware Security Using Polymorphic and Stochastic Spin-Hall Effect Devices
Protecting intellectual property (IP) in electronic circuits has become a
serious challenge in recent years. Logic locking/encryption and layout
camouflaging are two prominent techniques for IP protection. Most existing
approaches, however, particularly those focused on CMOS integration, incur
excessive design overheads resulting from their need for additional circuit
structures or device-level modifications. This work leverages the innate
polymorphism of an emerging spin-based device, called the giant spin-Hall
effect (GSHE) switch, to simultaneously enable locking and camouflaging within
a single instance. Using the GSHE switch, we propose a powerful primitive that
enables cloaking all the 16 Boolean functions possible for two inputs. We
conduct a comprehensive study using state-of-the-art Boolean satisfiability
(SAT) attacks to demonstrate the superior resilience of the proposed primitive
in comparison to several others in the literature. While we tailor the
primitive for deterministic computation, it can readily support stochastic
computation; we argue that stochastic behavior can break most, if not all,
existing SAT attacks. Finally, we discuss the resilience of the primitive
against various side-channel attacks as well as invasive monitoring at runtime,
which are arguably even more concerning threats than SAT attacks.Comment: Published in Proc. Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE) 201

Challenges and examples of in-situ memory content extraction techniques
We present embedded devices memory elements -
from core registers to off chip-use, type and architecture before
summarising their features regarding extraction techniques at
scale. We list recent and on-going attack platform methodologies
prior analysing their pros and cons. Particularly of importance,
we address combined attack approaches, signal processing techniques and the challenges of low cost extraction methodologies.
Above all, we characterise beam-based extraction techniques,
starting from sample preparation before concluding on in-situ
memory content extraction limits and countermeasures
Chronic pain and pain processing in Parkinson’s disease
Pain is experienced by the vast majority of patients living with Parkinson’s disease. It is most often of nociceptive origin, but may also be ascribed to neuropathic (radicular or central) or miscellaneous sources. The recently validated King’s Parkinson’s Disease Pain Scale is based on 7 domains including musculoskeletal pain, chronic body pain (central or visceral), fluctuation-related pain, nocturnal pain, oro-facial pain, pain with discolouration/oedema/swelling, and radicular pain. The basal ganglia integrate incoming nociceptive information and contribute to coordinated motor responses in pain avoidance and nocifensive behaviors. In Parkinson’s disease, nigral and extra-nigral pathology, involving cortical areas, brainstem nuclei, and spinal cord, may contribute to abnormal central nociceptive processing in patients experiencing pain or not. The dopamine deficit lowers multimodal pain thresholds that are amenable to correction following levodopa dosing. Functional brain imaging with positron emission tomography following administration of H215O revealed abnormalities in the sensory discriminative processing of pain (insula/SII), as well as in the affective motivational processing of pain (anterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex). Pain management is dependent on efforts invested in diagnostic accuracy to distinguish nociceptive from neuropathic pain. Treatment requires an integrated approach including strategies to lessen levodopa-related response fluctuations, in addition to other pharmacological and non-pharmacological options such as deep brain stimulation and rehabilitation

Practical Partial Hardware Reverse Engineering Analysis
Funder: Isaac Newton Trust; doi: https://doi.org/10.13039/501100004815Abstract: Reverse engineering typically requires expensive equipment, skilled technicians, time, a cross section of the component to be sliced out and a dedicated reconstruction software. In this paper, we present a low-cost alternative, combining fast frontside sample preparation, electron microscopy imaging, error-free standard cell recognition and within and between-die standard cell statistical analysis (SCSA). Step-by-step, we depict the process to access the transistor’s drain/source area, to acquire the full area of a single chip layer, to adapt pattern recognition for standard cells and to analyze the standard cell width, local/global location and occurrences number. The inner workings of each step are accompanied by results on 45–65-nm FCBGA devices enabling to locate specific areas (e.g. registers, hardware accelerator). We particularly point out the importance of such design information extraction for local fault injection and hardware assurance. The primary goal is to analyze how much design information of a complex integrated circuit can be retrieved with minimal costs and without outsourcing
Navigation de Robots Mobiles par Mémoire Sensorielle
This thesis is concerned with a complete navigation framework for mobile robots based on a representation of the environment as a sensory memory. The objective is to drive the robot from a place to another place along paths which have been travelled during a learning step. The memory structure, firstly detailled, is built from key images acquired during this teleoperated step. Given a target key image, the robot first localizes itself on the sensory memory and then a sensory route is extracted to reach the target image. Sensor-based control laws have been proposed for wheeled non-holonomic mobile robots and quadrotor aerial vehicles, taking into account the movement constraints of those robots. For omnidirectional or fisheye cameras, an efficient approach for initial localization has been proposed as well as tools to estimate the state of the vehicle required to compute the control laws outputs. The complete framework has been setup, with a particular attention to the memory management. Many applications on different robots and with different cameras validate our approach and show promising results.
Inner ear ossification and mineralization kinetics in human embryonic development - microtomographic and histomorphological study.
Little is known about middle and inner ear development during the second and third parts of human fetal life. Using ultra-high resolution Microcomputed Tomography coupled with bone histology, we performed the first quantitative middle and inner ear ossification/mineralization evaluation of fetuses between 17 and 39 weeks of gestational age. We show distinct ossification paces between ossicles, with a belated development of the stapes. A complete cochlear bony covering is observed within the time-frame of the onset of hearing, whereas distinct time courses of ossification for semicircular canal envelopes are observed in relation to the start of vestibular functions. The study evidences a spatio-temporal relationship between middle and inner ear structure development and the onset of hearing and balance, critical senses for the fetal adaptation to birth
