The Financial Health of Hospitals: Critical Access and Rural Hospitals in West Virginia

    Get PDF
Critical Access Hospitals and rural hospitals are the safety net community health providers across the United States and especially is rural, sparsely populated states like West Virginia. While many larger hospitals across the country are merging of forming other combinations, there has been a significant increase in the number of small hospital closures or transformation of their services. This study looks specifically at hospitals of 100 beds or less in West Virginia to determine if there are looming threats for these hospitals that may not only affect their ability to operate but which might also have significant impact on the availability and accessibility of many of West Virginia’s rural residents to timely, quality emergency, acute, primary and preventative health care

Method and apparatus for disabling an echo canceller on a digital telecommunications network

    Get PDF
A method and apparatus for disabling an echo canceller in a framed digital network from a remote terminal that is copuled to the network through an unframed data link. Control is effected by sending N different bit sequences from the remote terminal, where N is the number of different framing alignments that may be imposed on the unframed data by the network. The different sequences are chosen so that one will be framed by the network as the requisite control tone regardless of which framing alignment is actually imposed

A method and apparatus for transmitting a byte-organized serial data stream from a transmitting station to a receiving station that may employ byte boundaries different than the transmitting station. The technique includes sending N different data streams from the remote terminal, where N is the number of different framing alignments that may be imposed on the unframed data stream by the network. The different data streams are chosen so that one will be framed by the network as the intended data stream regardless of which framing alignment is actually imposed

Increased Dendrite Branching in AβPP/PS1 Mice and Elongation of Dendrite Arbors by Fasudil Administration

Amyloid-β (Aβ) overproduction and dendrite arbor atrophy are hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. The RhoA GTPase (Rho) signals through Rho kinase (ROCK) to control cytoskeletal dynamics and regulate neuron structure. Hyperactive Rho signaling destabilizes neurons leading to dendritic regression that can be rescued by genetic or pharmacological reduction of ROCK signaling. To understand what effect reduced ROCK signaling has on the dendrite arbors of mice that overproduce Aβ, we administered the ROCK inhibitor fasudil to AβPP/PS1 transgenic mice. We report that increased dendrite branching occurs in AβPP/PS1 mice and that fasudil promotes lengthening of the dendrite arbors of CA1 pyramidal neurons

A key to the species of Keetia (Rubiaceae: Vanguerieae) in West Africa, with three new, threatened species from Guinea and Ivory Coast

    Get PDF
Keetia susu Cheek and K. futa Cheek from the Republic of Guinea, and K. abouabou Cheek from Ivory Coast are described here. Each species is assessed using the IUCN standard as, respectively, Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered. Each species is illustrated and mapped. A key to the 16 species of Keetia in West Africa (Senegal to Benin) is provided. The number of species of Keetia currently accepted is now known to total 35
