    Since the foundational work of Farjoun and Machover , important contributions to the field of probabilistic economy have been made. In this context one naturally has conservation of money as a postulate. However it is questionable whether a capitalist economy could ever work with entirely exogenous money, and it is interesting to see to what extent probabilistic arguments can illuminate the evolution of the type of endogenous money system that characterizes contemporary capitalism. We first argue, on probabilistic grounds, that a system with a strict conservation law on money was historically unsustainable. We then make the case that phenomena such as the formation of a rate of interest, periodic commercial crises, and the formation of a rentier class can be understood using the sort of reasoning pioneered by Farjoun and Machove

    Abstract MicroRNAs are well known regulators of mRNA stability and translation. However, the magnitude of both translational repression and mRNA decay induced by miRNA binding varies greatly between miRNA targets. This can be the result of cis and trans factors that affect miRNA binding or action. We set out to address this issue by studying how various mRNA characteristics affect miRNA-mediated repression. Using a dual luciferase reporter system, we systematically analyzed the ability of selected mRNA elements to modulate miRNA-mediated repression. We found that changing the 3′UTR of a miRNA-targeted reporter modulates translational repression by affecting the translation efficiency. This 3′UTR dependent modulation can be further altered by changing the codon-optimality or 5′UTR of the luciferase reporter. We observed maximal repression with intermediate codon optimality and weak repression with very high or low codon optimality. Analysis of ribosome profiling and RNA-seq data for endogenous miRNA targets revealed translation efficiency as a key determinant of the magnitude of miRNA-mediated translational repression. Messages with high translation efficiency were more robustly repressed. Together our results reveal modulation of miRNA-mediated repression by characteristics and features of the 5′UTR, CDS and 3′UTR

    A helicopter flight-test program to evaluate the performance of Honeywell's Tetrad - a strapdown, laser gyro, inertial navitation system is discussed. The results of 34 flights showed a mean final navigational velocity error of 5.06 knots, with a standard deviation of 3.84 knots; a corresponding mean final position error of 2.66 n.mi., with a standard deviation of 1.48 n.m.; and a modeled mean-position-error growth rate for the 34 tests of 1.96 knots, with a standard deviation of 1.09 knots. Tetrad's four-ring laser gyros provided reliable and accurate angular rate sensing during the test program and on sensor failures were detected during the evaluation. Criteria suitable for investigating cockpit systems in rotorcraft were developed. This criteria led to the development of two basic simulators. The first was a standard simulator which could be used to obtain baseline information for studying pilot workload and interactions. The second was an advanced simulator which integrated the RODAAS developed by Honeywell into this simulator. The second area also included surveying the aerospace industry to determine the level of use and impact of microcomputers and related components on avionics systems

    A theoretical analysis of the propagation characteristics of a finite amplitude pressure wave is presented. The analysis attempts to study the contribution of entropy-producing regions to the mechanism of aerodynamic noise generation. It results in a nonlinear convective wave equation in terms of entropy and a thermodynamic 'J' function. A direct analogy between the derived governing equation and those used in classical literature is obtained. An idealization of the processes considered permits the uncoupling of the equations of motion with a consequent construction of an acoustic analogy treating shock wave emission of finite amplitude acoustic waves. An engineering approach is reflected in the concept of an extended plug nozzle whose function is to facilitate aerodynamic noise attenuation by modifying the entropy-producing regions

    Ab initio parametrised model of strain-dependent solubility of H in alpha-iron

    The calculated effects of interstitial hydrogen on the elastic properties of alpha-iron from our earlier work are used to describe the H interactions with homogeneous strain fields using ab initio methods. In particular we calculate the H solublility in Fe subject to hydrostatic, uniaxial, and shear strain. For comparison, these interactions are parametrised successfully using a simple model with parameters entirely derived from ab initio methods. The results are used to predict the solubility of H in spatially-varying elastic strain fields, representative of realistic dislocations outside their core. We find a strong directional dependence of the H-dislocation interaction, leading to strong attraction of H by the axial strain components of edge dislocations and by screw dislocations oriented along the critical slip direction. We further find a H concentration enhancement around dislocation cores, consistent with experimental observations.Comment: part 2/2 from splitting of 1009.3784 (first part was 1102.0187), minor changes from previous version
