International audienceOur aim is to explain the possible bimodality of the compositions of the magmatic rocks of the same province. In order to do so, we present a model for the crystallization of a magmatic chamber, coupling the three phenomena: solidification, sedimentation, chemical reactions between the solid and the liquid. These three phenomena make two independent dimensionless parameters appear: the ratios of the solidification rate to the transport velocity, and of the chemical kinetics to the transport velocity. The model is written for one independent chemical component. It is shown that, for certain values of the dimensionless parameters, the chemical composition of the chamber can present a bimodal distribution, starting from uniform initial conditions. This model shows that the coupling between three elementary phenomena is enough to explain the bimodality, or more generally the appearance of discontinuities of chemical compositions, without making any additional assumption.

International audiencePeridotite xenoliths brought up to the surface by the volcanism of the Kerguelen Islands represent a mantle that has been affected by a high degree of partial melting followed by intense melt percolation above the Kerguelen plume. These xenoliths are therefore particularly suitable to investigate effects of melt-rock interaction on crystallographic fabrics (lattice-preferred orientation (LPO)) of peridotite minerals and on the LPO-induced seismic properties of peridotites above a mantle plume. We have studied a suite of 16 ultramafic samples representative of different degrees of partial melting and magma-rock interaction among which the protogranular harzburgites are the least metasomatised xenoliths and dunites are the ultimate stage of metasomatism. Olivine LPO is characterized by high concentration of [010] axes perpendicular to the foliation and [100] axes close to the lineation or distributed in the foliation plane in harzburgites, whereas the high concentration of [100] axes is parallel to the lineation and [010] axes is perpendicular to the assumed foliation in dunites. Olivine LPO in harzburgites is interpreted as being due to a deformation regime in axial compression or transpression. The fabric strength of olivine decreases progressively from protogranular to poikilitic harzburgites and finally to dunites, for which it remains nevertheless significant (J index 3.8). Seismic properties calculated from LPO of minerals indicate that metasomatism at higher melt/rock ratio lowers the P wave velocities. The most significant difference between harzburgites and dunites corresponds to the distribution of S wave anisotropy. Harzburgites display the maximum of anisotropy within the foliation plane and the minimum of anisotropy perpendicular to the foliation plane, whereas the lowest anisotropy is parallel to the lineation for dunites. These modifications of seismic properties as a result of metasomatic processes may induce seismic heterogeneities in the mantle above the Kerguelen plume. In addition, assuming a lithospheric mantle primarily harzburgitic and structured with a horizontal foliation, the seismic properties calculated for the Kerguelen xenoliths reconcile the rather high anisotropy evidenced by the horizontally propagating surface waves with the apparent isotropy revealed by the absence of splitting of vertically propagating teleseismic SKS waves recorded by the GEOSCOPE Kerguelen station

International audienceBackground: The effect of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is not assessed within the first 10 years postpartum, regardless of subsequent diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the risk of CVD events related to GDM within 7 years of postpartum. Methods: This nationwide population-based study of deliveries in 2007 and 2008 with a follow-up of 7 years was based on data from the French medico-administrative database. Two groups were formed: women with a history of GDM and women without GDM or previous diabetes. CVD included angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, stroke, heart bypass surgery, coronary angioplasty, carotid endarterectomy and fibrinolysis. Hypertensive disease was assessed separately. Determinants studied included age, obesity, subsequent diabetes mellitus and hypertensive diseases during pregnancy. Adjusted odds ratios for outcomes were calculated using multiple logistic regressions. Results: The hospital database recorded 1,518,990 deliveries in 2007 and 2008. Among these, 62,958 women had a history of GDM. After adjusting for age, DM, obesity and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, GDM was significantly associated with a higher risk of CVD (adjusted Odds Ratio aOR = 1.25 [1.09-1.43]). Considering each variable in a separate model, GDM was associated with angina pectoris (aOR = 1.68 [1.29-2.20]), myocardial infarction (aOR = 1.92 [1.36-2.71]) and hypertension (aOR = 2.72 [2.58-2.88]) but not with stroke. Conclusions: A history of GDM was identified as a risk factor of CVD, especially coronary vascular diseases, within the 7 years postpartum. A lifestyle changes from postpartum onwards can be recommended and supported

233: Symmetric dimethylarginine serum level as a new marker of left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with acute myocardial infarction

Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is a by-product of protein methylation implicated in the prognosis after acute myocardial infarction (MI) and heart failure through Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) inhibition. We aimed to investigate whether SDMA - the endogenous symmetrical stereoisomer of ADMA - that has insignificant inhibitory effects on NOS might be a marker of left ventricular function in acute MI.MethodsBlood samples from 468 consecutive patients hospitalized <24 hours after acute MI were taken on admission. Serum levels of ADMA and SDMA were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was assessed by echocardiography at 2±1 d after admission.ResultsAmong the study population, mean age was 66±14 y, most were male (77%), hypertensive (54%), with prior CAD (20%) or diabetes (20%). On admission, half had ST segment elevation MI (STEMI) (55%), and ¼ suffered from heart failure, as assessed by killip>1 (23%). Mean LVEF was 52±13%. Mean ADMA and SDMA levels were at 0.81±0.42 and 0.61±0.44, respectively. Spearman analysis showed that LVEF was correlated negatively with SDMA (r=-0.135, p=0.006), but neither with ADMA (r=-0.001, p=0.99). SDMA was strongly associated with age (r=+0.354, p<0.001), creatinine clearance (r=-0.416, p<0.001), CRP (r=+0.134, p=0.004) and homocysteine (r=+0.413, p<0.001). By univariate linear regression analysis, age, homocysteine, hypertension, diabetes, prior CAD, admission heart rate, creatinine clearance, anterior wall location, STEMI, CK peak, and acute statin treatment, in addition to SDMA, were significantly associated with LVEF (p<0.05). Backward multivariate analysis including these covariates showed that SDMA remains an independent predictor of LVEF (B=-3.422; SE=1.687, p=0.043), beyond classical determinants of LVEF including age, homocysteine and renal function.ConclusionOur large prospective study showed for the first time that SDMA, but ADMA, may be linked to left ventricular function in patients with acute MI, and suggests that such dimethylarginines may probably exert biological activity by other pathways than NOS activity inhibition and beyond renal function

Petrology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of the olivine diogenite NWA 4255: new insights into the magmatic evolution of asteroid 4 Vesta

Northwest Africa (NWA) 4255 is a meteorite found in the region of Tindouf (southwestern Algeria), classified as brecciated olivine diogenite. Based on textural observations and orthopyroxene compositions, two different lithologies were determined: harzburgitic and orthopyroxenitic. The orthopyroxenitic lithology contains orthopyroxene (Mg no. 73.99–75.68) and spinel (Cr no. 83.09–85.11, Mg no. 15.57–22.45). On the other hand, the harzburgitic lithology contains orthopyroxene (Mg no. 74.54–77.14) and olivine (Mg no. 70.94–72.57). The iron metal and the sulfides (Troilites) of this sample are present in both lithologies and are low in Ni (Ni < 0.1 wt%). The Fe/Mn ratio of orthopyroxenes ranges from 22.28 to 32.64 and show a large overlap between both lithologies. Lowest ratios are unusual; they are below the defined field for diogenites and olivine diogenites. ∆17O values are − 0.234 ± 0.003 (1σ) and confirm that the NWA 4255 originated from 4Vesta. The results of this study show that there is a genetic linkage between the two lithologies of NWA 4255 and correspond to in situ crystallization processes. This olivine diogenite reflects transition between two major magmatic processes in 4Vesta. The magma ocean of 4Vesta crystallized at equilibrium, allowing the formation of a dunitic and harzburgitic mantle. This late lithology is linked to the peritectic reaction between the olivines formed and the evolved liquid. Our sample then reflects this crucial step of separating this mantle from the residual liquid. This melt evolving on the peritectic allowed the formation of the observed harzburgitic assemblage and then evolves out from the peritectic reaction to proceed to a fractional crystallization process involving the formation of orthopyroxenite

253: The effect of statins on the risk of first non-fatal myocardial infarction: A population-based observational study using the PGRx information system

    Get PDF
BackgroundDespite demonstrated positive effects in a number of clinical trials, the evidence is lacking as to the impact of statins on the risk of first myocardial infarction (MI) in real life settings.ObjectivesTo assess the impact of real life statin utilization on the risk of first non-fatal MIMethodsCase-control methodology using the pharmacoepidemiological information system PGRx. Data on comorbidities, risk factors and medications were obtained from medical records and patient telephone interviews. General practices (n=371) and cardiology centres (n=60) across France were employed in the study. Cases were patients with the first MI ≤ 1 month before the date of recruitment (n=2238). Controls were patients seen by a general practitioner (GP) with no restriction as to the reasons of consultation (n=2238), matched to MI cases on gender, age, frequency of visits to a doctor, date of recruitment and personal history of non-cardiovascular chronic disease. Statin exposure was defined as any utilisation in the two-year prior to date of MI in cases or recruitment date in controls. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) of the risk of first MI was estimated by multiple conditional logistic regression models. Comparative effectiveness and propensity to use of individual statin molecules were assessed.ResultsThe use of statins was associated with a lower MI risk (adjusted OR 0.67 [95% CI 0.56 - 0.79] for current use (within 2 months before the index date) and 0.73 [0.62 0.86] for any use within 24 months). Among individual statins, rosuvastatin was associated with the lowest MI risk (adjusted OR 0.49 [0.35 - 0.68] for any use in 24 months preceding the index date) followed by simvastatin (0.62 [0.46 - 0.84]).ConclusionsIn this first major population-based observational study we reproduced the results observed in recent meta-analyses accounting for real life compliance and population variability. The results could be of interest and applicable to other industrialised countries as the observed risk reduction was constant across MI risk levels
