    An evaluation of some mining related SSSIs within the context of Part IIA Environmental Protection Act

    This report describes the results of jointly funded project by the British Geological Survey and English Nature to develop a GIS approach to prioritising mineralogical SSSIs. The object and rationale was to prioritise sites for follow on studies aimed at assessing pollution potential within the context of the Environmental Protection Act, Part IIA. The first part of the report introduces the main elements of the Part IIA legislation of relevance to abandoned mining. A brief account of the forthcoming EU Mine Waste Directive is also presented to set this study within a European context. The second part of the report deals with a description of the main environmental hazards linked to abandoned mining. The report goes on to briefly describe the English metallogenic setting relevant to the SSSIs and the minerals; both ore and gangue, of potential environmental concern are noted. An account of the GIS decision support application is then presented and the development of the scoring scheme based on the concept of ranked pollutant linkages. The final section of the report presents the GIS outputs in ranked tabular form and recommendations are made for prioritising follow up work based on this output. The site prioritisations for each site are presented on the CDs in the Appendix

    En cuatro localidades se evaluó el efecto de la fertilización fosfórica edáfica y foliar sobre el rendimiento y la gravedad específica en la variedad de papa ‘Diacol Capiro’. La evaluación comprendió 20 tratamientos correspondientes a la combinación de dos factores: P edáfico (0, 100, 200, 300 y 400 kg· ha-1 de P2O5) y P foliar (0, 5, 10 y 15 kg· ha-1 de P2O5), junto con un tratamiento testigo de fertilización comercial. No se encontraron diferencias para la variable gravedad específica en ninguno de los tratamientos evaluados, por lo que se deduce que la variación en los niveles de P no afecta esta variable. En el rendimiento de tubérculo se encontraron diferencias para el factor P edáfico, mientras que no hubo diferencias para el factor P foliar. Dentro del  factor P edáfico, en la categoría primera, segunda y rendimiento total de tubérculo se observó que la variedad ‘Diacol Capiro’ presentó respuesta positiva sólo hasta la dosis de 200 kg· ha-1 de P2O5

    La producción de semilla básica es fundamental en la cadena de producción de semillas de alta calidad. En Solanum phureja Juz. el Buk., los factores densidad de siembra y tamaño de tubérculo semilla óptimos para su producción no han sido evaluados hasta el momento. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar estos dos factores en condiciones de la Estación Experimental San Jorge JCA. La investigación se realizó bajo un Diseño en Bloques Completos al Azar con arreglo factorial 4 x 3. Se encontró que las distancias entre plantas evaluadas (15; 20; 25 y 30 cm) no afectan la producción de semilla por unidad de área y que la utilización de tubérculos-semilla entre 1,27 y 2,00 cm de diámetro es la más recomendada.The production ofbasic seed is a very important factor, for the seed production chain looking for high quality. The sowing density and the tuber size have not been researched for Solanum phureja Juz. el Buk. The evaluation ofthese factors was conducted at Experimental Center San Jorge - JCA. Randomized Complete Block Design with factorial array (4x3) was used in this assay. It was found that the distance among plants (15; 20; 25 and 30 cm) did not modify the seed production per unit of area.     Respiratorni simptomi u radnica na preradi riba na obali Jadrana u Hrvatskoj

    This article describes respiratory symptoms and lung function in 98 fish processing female workers employed in a fish processing plant located on the Croatian Adriatic coast and 95 matching controls. The study included chronic and acute respiratory symptoms which developed during the shifts. Lung function measurements included forced vital capacity (FVC), one-second forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and maximal expiratory rates at 50 % and the last 25 % (FEF50, FEF25). Chronic respiratory symptoms were significantly dominant in fish processing workers compared to controls. The most common chronic symptoms were hoarseness (57.1 %), nasal catarrh (51.0 %), chronic cough (42.9 %), chronic phlegm (34.7 %), and frequent chest cold (35.7 %). Exposed smokers and nonsmokers had a similar prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms. Acute symptoms over the work shift were high, with headache in lead (smokers: 62.5 %; nonsmokers: 56.1 %). Most of the ventilatory capacity parameters were significantly lower than predicted, FEF25 in particular, indicating obstructive changes predominantly in the smaller airways. These findings suggest that fish processing workers are prone to developing acute and chronic respiratory symptoms as well as to lung function changes. This calls for medical and technical preventive measures to be introduced in the work environment of the fi sh processing plant.Cilj je ovoga istraživanja bio ispitati respiratorne simptome i plućnu funkciju radnica zaposlenih na preradi riba u industriji na obali Jadranskog mora u Hrvatskoj. U istraživanje je uključeno 98 radnica zaposlenih na preradi riba i 95 žena neizložene kontrolne skupine. Ispitivani su kronični i akutni respiratorni simptomi koji se razvijaju tijekom radne smjene. Mjerena je plućna funkcija registriranjem forsiranoga vitalnog kapaciteta (FVC), forsiranoga ekspiracijskog volumena u prvoj sekundi (FEV1) te maksimalnoga ekspiracijskog protoka pri 50 % i zadnjih 25 % forsiranoga vitalnog kapaciteta (FEF50, FEF25) na krivulji maksimalni ekspiracijski protok-volumen (MEPV). Učestalost većine kroničnih respiracijskih simptoma bila je značajno viša u eksponiranih u usporedbi s kontrolnom skupinom. U eksponiranih radnica utvrđena je i visoka prevalencija akutnih simptoma koji se razvijaju tijekom radne smjene, posebno za promuklost (57,1 %) i katar nosa (51 %), potom slijedi kronični kašalj (42,9 %), kronični iskašljaj (34,7 %), upale sinusa (32 %) i česte prehlade (35,7 %). S obzirom na naviku pušenja pušači i nepušači imali su sličnu prevalenciju kroničnih respiratornih simptoma. Izložene radnice imale su visoku prevalenciju akutnih simptoma tijekom radne smjene i to naročito za glavobolju (pušači 62,5 %; nepušači 56,1 %). Ventilacijska funkcija pluća bila je značajno smanjena u usporedbi s predviđenim normalnim vrijednostima posebice za FEF25 % upućujući na opstruktivne promjene pretežno u manjim dišnim putovima. Naši podaci upućuju na opasnost razvoja kroničnih i akutnih respiracijskih simptoma i promjena plućne funkcije u radnika koji rade u industriji na preradi riba.     Can statistical methods optimize complex multicomponent mixtures for sintering ceramic granular materials? A case of success with synthetic aggregates

    The relationship between the proportions of multicomponent mixtures with the technological properties of ceramic granular materials (synthetic aggregates) has been studied using statistical methods. The four phases involved in the formulations have been: kaolin (K) as aluminosilicate source; cork powder (C) as organic carbon source; sodium carbonate (N) as flux and pyrite (P) as source of iron and sulfur. The Mixture Experiments - Design of Experiments (ME-DOE) has been the statistical methodology applied from the initial configuration of the 36 starting formulations to the final validation of the models and optimums. After granulation, artificial aggregates have been obtained by sintering in a rotary kiln, and their main technological properties have been determined. Bloating index (BI), particle density (ρrd), water absorption (WA24) and crushing strength (S) were selected as the four key characteristics to be modeled and optimized, using response surface and effect plots to assess the effect of K, C, N and P on such properties. 32 out of 36 starting varieties met the density criteria for lightweight aggregates. In the optimum formulations obtained, the minimum percentage of K was 83 wt%, so that the variations in the percentages of P, C and N were the critical variables for determining the final properties of the aggregate. The contrast between experimental and estimated data has shown that the models fit adequately, indicating that this type of approach may have enormous potential for future research on artificial aggregates and other ceramic materialsThis research was conducted as a part of the ECO-MET-AL Project, PID2019-109520RB-I00 / AEI / 10.13039/501100011033, “Can industrial and mining metalliferous wastes produce green lightweight aggregates?
