Automated Detection of Voids in Redshift Surveys

We present a new void search algorithm for automated detection of voids in three-dimensional redshift surveys. Based on a model in which the main features of the LSS of the Universe are voids and walls, we classify the galaxies into wall galaxies and field galaxies and we define voids as continuous volumes that are devoid of any wall galaxies. Field galaxies are allowed within the voids. The algorithm makes no assumptions regarding the shapes of the voids and the only constraint that is imposed is that the voids are always thicker than a preset limit, thus eliminating connections between adjacent voids through smal breaches in the walls. By appropriate scaling of the parameters with the selection function this algorithm can be used to analyze flux-limited surveys. We test the algorithm on Voronoi tessellations and apply it to the SSRS2 redshift survey to derive the spectrum of void sizes and other void properties. We find that the average diameter of a void is 37\pm 8 \h Mpc. We suggest the usage of this fully automated algorithm to derive a quantitative description of the voids, as another tool in describing the large scale structure of the Universe and for comparison with numerical simulations.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters; 13 page AAS latex file including 1 table, 3 PS figures. Static output-feedback stabilization of discrete-time Markovian jump linear systems: a system augmentation approach

    No full text
This paper studies the static output-feedback (SOF) stabilization problem for discrete-time Markovian jump systems from a novel perspective. The closed-loop system is represented in a system augmentation form, in which input and gain-output matrices are separated. By virtue of the system augmentation, a novel necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of desired controllers is established in terms of a set of nonlinear matrix inequalities, which possess a monotonic structure for a linearized computation, and a convergent iteration algorithm is given to solve such inequalities. In addition, a special property of the feasible solutions enables one to further improve the solvability via a simple D-K type optimization on the initial values. An extension to mode-independent SOF stabilization is provided as well. Compared with some existing approaches to SOF synthesis, the proposed one has several advantages that make it specific for Markovian jump systems. The effectiveness and merit of the theoretical results are shown through some numerical example

Predicting Intermediate Storage Performance for Workflow Applications

Configuring a storage system to better serve an application is a challenging task complicated by a multidimensional, discrete configuration space and the high cost of space exploration (e.g., by running the application with different storage configurations). To enable selecting the best configuration in a reasonable time, we design an end-to-end performance prediction mechanism that estimates the turn-around time of an application using storage system under a given configuration. This approach focuses on a generic object-based storage system design, supports exploring the impact of optimizations targeting workflow applications (e.g., various data placement schemes) in addition to other, more traditional, configuration knobs (e.g., stripe size or replication level), and models the system operation at data-chunk and control message level. This paper presents our experience to date with designing and using this prediction mechanism. We evaluate this mechanism using micro- as well as synthetic benchmarks mimicking real workflow applications, and a real application.. A preliminary evaluation shows that we are on a good track to meet our objectives: it can scale to model a workflow application run on an entire cluster while offering an over 200x speedup factor (normalized by resource) compared to running the actual application, and can achieve, in the limited number of scenarios we study, a prediction accuracy that enables identifying the best storage system configuration

Growth, photosynthetic pigments, phenolic content and biological activities of Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Anethum graveolens L. and Pimpinella anisum L. (Apiaceae) in response to zinc

The effect of zinc (Zn) on phenols, antioxidant activities (free radicals' scavenging activities, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, chelating activity and reducing power), and enzyme inhibition activities of acetylcholinesterase, lipoxygenase and tyrosinase of anise, dill and two cultivars of fennel [Latina" (F-L) and "Doux de Florence" (F-DF)] aqueous extracts was evaluated for the first time. At the same time, growth and photosynthetic pigment contents were also estimated. A significant decrease in all growth parameters, such as plant height, fresh and dry weights of aerial parts and roots was statistically proved in the presence of 2 mM Zn. An enhancement of Zn accumulation was observed, particularly in aerial part. Exposure to 2 mM Zn induced quantitative changes in the phenols of all tested extracts. In fennel extracts, a decrease of phenol content was observed when treated with Zn, whereas an increase was found in dill and anise extracts submitted to Zn treatment. All samples, either in the presence or absence of Zn, showed antioxidant activity, independent on the tested assay, with the exception of the cultivar F-DF (treated and non-treated), which was unable to scavenge NO radicals. Zn-treated dill and anise presented usually higher antioxidant activity. Concerning inhibitory activities against acetylcholinesterase, lipoxygenase and tyrosinase enzymes, both treated and non-treated F-DF did not inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Zinc-treated F-DF was also unable to inhibit lipoxygenase activity. The remaining species presented capacity for inhibiting those enzymes and tyrosinase as well, but their abilities varied in response to Zn excess.Portuguese National Funding Agency for Science, Research and Technology (Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia - FCTPortugal) [UID/BIA/04325/2013-MEDTBIO, UID/Multi/04326/2013]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

VIDEO MOTION GRAPHIC SEBAGAI PROMOSI PERPUSTAKAAN BANK INDONESIA

    Get PDF
Bank Indonesia library is a new library located in Surabaya, East Java. Bank Indonesia Library has a history of its cultural heritage buildings and also the establishment of Bank Indonesia Library itself. Its existence is not widely known to society especially college students. This is caused by the lack of media information and the lack of human resources to manage the promotion of Bank Indonesia Library. To inform the public especially students about Bank Indonesia Library as a source of knowledge and unlimited reference, a promotional video is required as the main media used on its promotion. The concept of the promotional video is the fusion between the motion graphic and video live shoot. The use of motion in the video such as motion graphic and motion tracking as a new media is also useful to inform Bank Indonesia Library so that it becomes attractive to the potential visitors and provide information to the public about the history of the building and its establishment

Conformal Blocks for Arbitrary Spins in Two Dimensions

    Get PDF
Conformal blocks for four point functions for fields with arbitrary spins in two dimensions are obtained by evaluating an appropriate integral. The results are just products of hypergeometric functions of the conformally invariant cross ratios formed from the four complex coordinates. Results for scalars previously obtained are a special case. Applications to four point functions involving the energy momentum tensor are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, version 2 extra references and small changes, version 3 small corrections and extra material, version to be publishe

Indonesia is a country with countless unique cultural diversity which most likely influenced by the civilization that has been before. As it is widely known Indonesia in the past divided in many kingdoms. Majapahit kingdom was an empire which established around 1293 by Raden Wijaya andreached its peak of glory in the 14th century during the reign of Hayam Wuruk and his mahapatih Gajah Mada. The study of history is not only confined through textbooks in school. It can also be done by a game so that children will not feel bored and they can learn through playing. There are many kinds of games that can be played in this modern era, and one of them is a card game. Card games can be played anywhere and is very popular among teenagers. The combination of game and cultural element expected to make it easier to learn about of history and imparts a sense of nationalism

This article uncovers relevant sources and methodologies to gather knowledge about micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in Brazil. To achieve its purpose, the text presents sources and methodologies. This type of study is relatively neglected concerning MSMEs. Until this moment, not much data has been reported about these companies’ categories, and even less in advanced research. Among the most significant data and methodology of addressing MSMEs in the country, the text highlights the surveys conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE), and the international annual research Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) a study on the entrepreneurial activity, which Brazil is part for more than 20 years. The Brazilian institutions, as well as consulting for those companies, collect key data that posteriorly become research sources. Also, when explaining how institutions chose and treated the data, they own specific methodologies regarding those businesses in Brazil. The paper also points out the importance of constant law monitoring, adjustment, and technology incentives. This article's contribution is to present a research methodology on MSME in Brazil with relevant data
